Jenkins,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: Son of Jesse Joseph Galloway and his third wife Hannah Eliza (Sparks) (Coones) (Galloway) Doty. She is buried at Doty Cemetery with her third husband Joseph Doty. His wife was Sarah Jane Henson. - Cassville Republican, October 26, 1911 - Celebrated Golden Wedding Anniversary: Judge and Mrs. Melvin A. Galloway celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home in Jenkins City, Tuesday, October 16, in company with a number of their children, grandchildren and other relatives, neighbors and friends. An over half century ago Mr. and Mrs. Galloway took upon themselves the responsibility of building a home in this county. They nobly faced the problems and the great hardships of that period of the county's history which in 1861 was just beginning to bring so much of death, sorrow and desolation to then simple home life of this sparsely settled county. To both these old people who have almost if not quite reached three score and ten, it was a most happy day when they could celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary enjoying the blessing of health and the affection and devoting of their nine children and live over again in review the years which have been crowned with life's greatest blessings. Few couples live to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary, still fewer celebrate it with an unbroken family. All Mr. and Mrs. Galloway's children are living and all had planned to be present to make this the happiest day of their parent's lives but sickness and unavoidable circumstances made it impossible for three of the nine children to be present. Those who could not be present were: W. F. Galloway of Corpus Christi, Tex., Charles of Lamar and Mrs. J. H. Thomas of Cassville. Mr. Galloway is a native of Barry County and was born in 1841. With the exception of three years which was spent in the Civil War and a short residence at Marionville when a daughter was in school his life was been spent in this county. Mrs. Galloway was born in Stone County in 1843 where she lived until her marriage in 1861. Their children are: W. F. of Corpus Christi, Tex, A. L. of Cassville, Mrs. J. H. Thomas of Cassville, Mrs. Gillie Short of Marionville, Zack of Aurora, Charles of Lamar, George and Jess of Jenkins and Mrs. H. A. Gardener of Monett. During the Civil War, Mr. Galloway joined the Union Army and served more than three years, in Company E., of the First Arkansas Calvary. In 1878 he was elected a judge of the county court from the eastern district and served two years. At that time Judge M. B. Sparkman of Washburn Prairie was presiding Judge and Judge Wm. Fly was Judge form the western district. They are both living and were both invited to attend Judge Galloway's Golden Wedding Anniversary but were unable to do so on account of feeble health. Many handsome presents were received from the children, grandchildren and a large number of friends present. The day was a most pleasant one and the bountiful dinner greatly enjoyed. The honor and kind consideration shows these excellent old people was appreciated more than words could express and the memory of that day will often times gladden their hearts during the years to come. - June 11, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Jesse Galloway of Jenkins was in Cassville the latter part of last week. He expects soon to be a resident of our city. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Galloway will also come to Cassville to reside. - Cassville Democrat, August 4, 1917 - August 11, 1917 - Old Citizen Succumbs to Complication of Diseases at Age of 76 Years: It is with great sorrow that we chronicle the death of a most estimable citizen, Judge M. A. Galloway at his home in this city, Thursday, August 2, of a complication of diseases, aged 76 years, 3 months and 24 days. Besides a loving wife, he leaves a number of children and of relatives and friends to mourn his death. Rev. J. T. Brattin conducted funeral services at the Christian church, Friday, August 3, at 3 p.m., after which interment was made in Oak Hill Cemetery here. All his children, excepting his son, Frank, were present, when he passed away. An extended notice will appear in the next issue of the Democrat. - M. A. Galloway's Death - Barry County lost one of her oldest and best citizens when he summons of death came to Judge Melville A. Galloway at his home in this city surrounded by his affectionate wife and loving children, who tenderly administered every possible attention to an excellent husband and father. His honesty and integrity was never questioned by his acquaintances. He was never known to speak evil or any one and if he could not say something good about them, he remained silent. He was held in the highest estimation by all his acquaintances and his death is regretted by all. Judge Galloway was born in Barry County, April 8, 1841, and grew to manhood in this county, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hannah Galloway. He was married Oct. 17, 1861, to Miss Sarah Jane Henson, to whom were born twelve children, three dying in infancy, nine living who are: A. L. Galloway and Mrs. J. H. Thomas and Jesse Galloway of this city; Chas. Galloway, Mrs. Horace Gardener and Mrs. Gilla Short of Monett; Frank Galloway of Houston, Tex., Geo. Galloway of Pomona, Howell County; Zach Galloway of near Aurora, who are respected citizens in the communities in which they reside. In 1880, Judge Galloway was nominated for county judge by the democrats of Barry County, in the eastern district, which was largely republican and he was elected by a handsome majority and was associated with Judge's M. B. Sparkman and Wm. A. Fly, who proved an economical court and they very ably discharged their duties to tax payers for their county. All his brothers and sisters are dead except Mrs. Annie Baze of Sumner, Texas, who was present when her brother passed to the Holy City. He was a brother of the late Maj. Chas. Galloway, a well known citizen of this county, after the civil war, who died at Springfield, a few years ago. He died Aug. 2, 1917, age 73 years, 3 months and 24 days and had been married 56 years. His last words were, "It is finished," the life of a splendid man has gone to a wealthy reward in that land beyond. Rev. J. T. Brattin, an old and good friend of the deceased, preached a very impressive funeral service at the Christian Church in this city and spoke feelingly at the splendid traits of character of the deceased. The remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery in this city, and his sprit went to God who gave it. Headstone
