Research Note: His death certificate has that he was a son of James Jefferson Edens, born WV, and Mary Elizabeth Hutchens, born IL. He was located in the 1900 Census, Barry County, Missouri Flat Creek Township, Sheet 10 A. Charles W. Edens, age 20, married Minnie Apple, age 19, on Apr. 4. 1903. J. J. Edens, father of Charles, gave consent. - December 8, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - As the flowers start from a bulb, the stalk and leaves developed then the flower comes forth displaying the beautiful work of nature in the springtime when all nature is aglow with its beauties and the music of the forest produces one continual concert of harmonious action, yet in these bulbs are not cultivated and cared for their full beauty will never attain that attraction that was intended. After a continued sickness Charlie Edens died at his home in Seligman, Nov. 30, 1917, at 1:45 p. m., of tuberculosis, age 34 years, 9 months and 4 days, leaving his wife, son and daughter, mother, five sisters and one brother to mourn his passing. He was born Feb. 6, 1883 near Cassville. On April 4, 1903, he and Miss Minnie Apple were married. The remains were conveyed from Seligman, to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Edens of this city, Saturday afternoon and Sunday at 2 p.m., funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. J. T. Brattin, where a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends had assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to the family. Many friends from Seligman, where he had resided for so long, attended the funeral. He was a member of the M. W. A. at Seligman, and carried a policy for the benefit of his family. Before dying, he told his mother that he was not afraid to die. The remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery in this city, with M. W. A. honors. His sisters are: Mrs. Walter Vanzandt of this city, Mrs. Carrie Bennett and Miss Zettie Eden of Joplin, Mrs. Bert Townsend, Picher, Okla., and Tone Edens of this city. - March 6, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Edens, south of town received word Tuesday that their daughter, Miss Florence who is teaching near Monett, was thrown from a rig in a runaway Monday evening and received injuries but none serious. Miss Clara Edens went that evening to attend her. - May 26, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Local And Personal: Mrs. J. J. Eden and daughter, Mrs. L. J. Bennett, visited her son, Chas. Son of George Washington Edens, born 1822, Patrick Co., VA, who is buried at Old Stubblefield Cemetery, Barry County, Missouri. His death certificate that has he was a son of Washington Edens and Elizabeth George, both born WV. Goodspeed's History gives his parents as George Washington Edens and Delilah George. He is located in the 1900 Census, Barry County, Missouri Flat Creek Township, Sheet 10 A. - Cassville Republican, May, 9, 1929 - J. J. Edens, Civil War Veteran Passes After weeks of suffering of Bright's disease and bladder trouble - J. J. Edens passed away at his home in this city Saturday, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 12 days. Jefferson J. Edens was born in Patrick county, Virginia, on Feb. 16, 1848 and in 1858, moved with his parents to Perry County, Illinois where the family resided until the breaking out of the Civil war. Although very young, he enlisted in the Union army and served with the Union forces for over three years at the time of his enlistment being the youngest member of his regiment. Co. F. 13th Ill Cavalry. He became a corporal then a sergeant. In 1865 he and Miss Mary Elizabeth Hutchens were united in marriage at Tamaroa, IL and were residents in that state until 1876 when they moved to Missouri locating between Cassville and Seligman, which was their home for many years. Later the family moved to near Cassville where Mr. Edens engaged in farming until about 23 years ago when they moved to Cassville. To them were born seven children, one son, Charles Edens, dying in 1917. Those surviving the father are T. E. Edens of Purdy, Mrs. Gusta Baker of Miami, Okla. Mrs. Nettie Townsend of Commerce, Okla. Mrs. Josephine Vanzandt of Cassville, Mrs. Zetta Goldstein of Topeka, Kan., and Mrs. Caroline Bennett at home. Mrs. Edens passed away about three years ago and since then he and his daughter, Mrs. Caroline Bennett have kept the home. When about 16 years of age he professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church. He had been a member of the Masonic and Eastern Star orders for years. A large number of Masons and Eastern Star members were in attendance at the funeral where the Masons gave their funeral service at the grave. Funeral services were held at the family residence Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Charles Vanzandt after which the body was laid to rest at Oak Hill cemetery under the direction of the Hankins Funeral Service, six of his grandsons acting as pall bearers. - Cassville Republican, August 24, 1893 - J. Edens, Thursday. - April 30, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Edens and daughter, Mrs. J. C. Baker, went to Duneweg Friday evening to see their daughter and sister, Mrs. Bert Townsend, who has been quite sick. Mrs. Townsend underwent an operation Thursday. She was located in the 1900 Census, Barry County, Missouri Flat Creek Twp., Sheet 10 A. In 1900 she was the mother of 8 children with 7 living. Caroline "Carrie" was one daughter, Charles was one of the sons. Phyllis' Note: Seems to be 2 different spellings, Hutchings and Hutchens. The death date is different on the death certificate. The stone has Mar. 7, 1926 - Death certificate has Feb. 28, 1926. She was the wife of J. J. Edens and a daughter of William Hutchings/Hutchens and Mary E. Hutchings, both born IL. Mrs. J. J. Goldstein was the informant. - September 3, 1904, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Mrs. Hutchens of Pikneyville, Illinois, who was visiting her daughter, Mrs. J. J. Edens of this city received a message Sunday morning informing her that her nephew Herschel Hutchings had been killed in Bartlesville, Okla. He was engaged in railroad construction work and it is that hew as killed while on duty. He was a single man and 31 years of age. The remains were shipped to Joplin for interment. Edna worked her way through high school at Cassville and one year of college in Springfield, Missouri. She united in marriage to Don Bradley Edie on July 27, 1946 in Exeter, Missouri by Ab Edie. She taught school several years before starting a family. Don preceded her in death. Others preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Dorothy Curry; three brothers-in-law, Paul Curry, W.H. Holman and Wayne Horner and two nephews, Rex Horner and Rob Swindell. Edna worked full-time as homemaker, wife and mother, along with her church work of Sunday School teacher, vacation Bible School teacher and Girls Auxiliary. As the daughters became older she accepted the position of Church Secretary at First Baptist Church of Cassville, Missouri. She loved the Lord and served 28 years, until retiring August 15, 1991. Edna continued to work alongside other church members on mission trips, washing dishes, cooking or just meeting needs. She took time for Cradle Roll, visiting young parents and encouraging them to start their babies in church. Edna stayed active in church work and prayer groups until the age of 85. She was a constant testament and example to her family. Her children call her the Proverbs 31 woman. She strived to go the extra mile in cooking for her family and loving her family. Alma Jean was predeceased by her husband, "Rex", her parents and four brothers, Elmer Carpenter, Charles Carpenter, Walter "Gilbert" Carpenter and William "Ozzie" Carpenter. Alma Jean and Rex often assisted with summer Vacation Bible School at their churches. Clara Arline Thomas was born April 13, 1913, to George Albert and Nola Mae (Wiley) Thomas at Leann in Barry County, Missouri. She was the oldest of five girls. Her mother died in 1929 and the family later moved to Cassville, MO. She married George Mitchell Edmondson on Dec. 21, 1932, at Exeter, MO, and to this union four children were born. Chris Edmondson, Cassville, MO, was the informant. - Cassville Democrat, June 7, 1945 - George Cleveland Edmondson died at his home east of Cassville and near Mineral Spring Saturday at the age of 93 years and 18 days. Mr. Edmondson, one of Barry County's old time and respected citizens was born in Elijah, Ga., on May 15, 1852, resided there until he arrived at young manhood and came to Cassville 55 years ago and located on the farm 4 miles east of town where he resided until his passing. He was united in marriage to Martha Hipp on March 15, 1876 at Elijah and this fine couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before her passing nine years ago. To their union was born 12 children, all of whom survived. They are: James Edmondson, Seneca; Doss Edmondson, Seligman; Cleve Edmondson, Alaska; Mrs. Hattie Chapman, Metz, MO; Mrs. Cordelia Evans, Kansas City; Mrs. Vena Stubblefield, Portland, Ore; Ben and Cliff Edmondson, Mrs. Fannie Henley, Mrs. Addie Williams of Cassville and Maye and Flora Edmondson of the home. In addition to the children he leaves 32 grandchild and 42 great grandchildren. A most remarkable salutation is found in his passing in that despite his many years he never had to witness a death among his children or grandchildren or two great-grandchildren. George Cleveland Edmondson was a citizen of whom any community may be proud. He was the very sole of honor and integrity. His word was a good as a government bond. His business was always open and above board and he was most successful as a farmer and stockman and during the days of his activity he was among the county's largest stock growers. He is the last of his immediate family. He was a brother of the late Wm. P. Edmondson, another pioneer, who left like his brother a name engraved in the minds of all a fine citizen and a good man. Funeral services were held at the Koon Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Charles Vanzandt with services at the grave by Pythagoras Lodge 383, A. F. and A.M., of which he had been a member for more than 50 years. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery by the Koon Funeral Home. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 21, 1919 - Geo. In his younger years Shawn was very involved in rodeo. He rode bulls for many years competing in many associations. As he would say "Time and age had caught up with him", so he retired the bull rope and started judging rodeos. He continued to do this up until last year, when his health would not allow it, but his heart was always there! Shawn accepted Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and was baptized in 2002 in Cassville by Ben Loudermilk. Shawn was a cowboy that loved the lord. Research Note: He was the youngest son of George and Nerva (Brock) England. He was born on May 22, 1929 in the Mineral Springs community, attended elementary school at Gaddis, graduated from Cassville High School in 1946, and attended Monett Junior College. He was united in marriage to Nancy Joslin on January 27, 1951. Charles served in the Missouri National Guard at Monett, Missouri from 1950 to 1956. He was an outfielder for the Cassville Blues minor league baseball team in the early 1950s. Charles and Nancy owned and operated Skelly Oil Company Station in Cassville, Missouri for 20 years. He also owned and operated England Sales, farmed and raised registered Charolais cattle, and was a member of the American International Charolais Association. In 1987, he became a State Gasoline Inspector with the Missouri Department of Agriculture in the Petroleum Division, and retired in 1997. In 1978, she married W. L. Townsley. Upon retirement they moved to Joplin to make their home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne and her second husband, W. L. After the war, Bill was employed with Gulf Oil Corp. There were many overseas jobs which Bill undertook along with his family. They resided in Venezuela for 17 years, Bolivia for one and half years, and Nigeria for two years. Anna Lee and Bill had 58 wonderful blessed years together. Preceding her in death were her husband Bill in the year 2000, her parents Arno and Minnie, brother Lamont Fowler who died at the early age of 8 years, sister Minette Wirz of Highland, Illinois, and sister Virginia Raymond also of Highland, Illinois. He married Anna Lee Fowler on July 4, 1942, in Santa Ana, California.
