He is a son of Robert and Flora (Short) Davis. Robert Davis was of Welsh descent, and was born in VA in 1797. He went with his uncle to IL in 1807, his parents having died when he was an infant. In IL he grew ton manhood and married, but he was not permitted to live the time allotted to man, and died when in the prime of life, in 1823. His wife, who was a native of OH, was born about the same time as her husband, and died one year later. They left three children who grew to maturity, James C. being the only one now alive. His father having died when he was five years, and his mother when he was six years of age, he was taken by his father's uncle, J. C. Davis, with whom he lived until the latter's death in 1834. He was reared on a farm, and after the death of his guardian he went to Centerville, WI, where for three years he was engaged in various kinds of work, such as mining, teaming, etc. In 1837 he returned to his native county, and two years later married Sarah Moore, a daughter of Robert Moore, and a native of St. Clair Co., IL, born in 1821. Mrs. Davis died in 1849, leaving five children, viz: Fletcher (who is now a farmer in TX), Moses (a farmer in CA), Nancy J. Here he resided until 1884, when he sold out and purchased his present farm of 210 acres. Mr. Davis is a prosperous farmer and a highly esteemed citizen of the county. In politics he is a Democrat, but previous to the war was a Whig, having cast his first vote for Harrison in 1840. DAVIS, Joshua Wilson Sept. 1, 1838
Fayette Co., OH
Feb. 2, 1911
Cassville,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: Son of David and Hanna (Wilson) Davis. - Cassville Democrat, Feb. 9, 1911 - Joshua W. Davis passed suddenly from time to eternity at his home on North Main street, late Thursday afternoon of heart failure and paralysis. He had expressed himself during the day in his usual health and attention, to his daily duties about his house and was up in town frequently during the day. Late in the afternoon he took his cow to water, returned and ate supper and was at the barn milking when the fatal stroke came. He was found in a dying condition at the barn and was taken to the house where he died within a few minutes. His neighbors had noticed that during the past few months he appeared to be growing quite feeble but shocked to learn of his sudden demise. Joshua W. Davis was born near Zanesville, Ohio, in 1839, and since 1894 had lived in this county, the principal part of the time on Roaring River. About nine months ago he moved to Cassville, bought a home and was spending the remainder of his days where he would have the convenience of the town. During the Civil War he served four years in the Union Army. He was married in 1859 to Miss Susannah Dummit and to them were born ten children, four of whom are living: Wm. of Iona, South Dakota; George, who lives in Oregon; Henry of Nebraska; and Charles of Marionville. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church of which he was a member, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5, and interment made in Oak Hill Cemetery. Joshua Davis was one of the very best of neighbors and one of our very best citizens. In him were found those cardinal virtues which go to make up the highest type of upright citizenship. - January 25, 1908, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - J. W. Davis of Eagle Rock, was in town Saturday, and said a dog belonging to Nute Garrette went made and bit a good milch cow and vive head of goats, that he had to kill. - August 28, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Moors Farwell of near Eagle Rock, was up Friday and said that J. W. Davis had a very narrow escape with his life Thursday, while driving his cattle to water, his jersey bull became enraged and attacked the horse knocking it down, causing Mr. Davis' head to strike a rock. He was in a very bad condition for a few minutes but soon recovered. Headstone
