Such was the life of Miles T. Abernathy, the earthly remains of whom were confined to the silent city of the dead by loving hands here on February 2, 1917. Cassville has had many noble men whose lives have been a blessing to the younger generations but for its lofty ideals purity of character, religious devotion, loyalty to friends and scarifies for those who most needed his assistance, this or any other community never produced a more noble character than that of Miles T. Abernathy. The pride of his life were his two nephews, Rev. John Abernathy and brother, whom he educated and cared for as a father when they were left fatherless at an early age. He transformed his gross metals of earth into things worthwhile reaped joy, contentment and a devoted friendship from those for whom he had sacrificed to enrich his life during the eventide. Miles T. Abernathy was born in Giles County Tennessee, Dec. 29, 1837. He came to Missouri and first located in Greene County, when a young man. About the year 1880 he came to Barry County. For a number of years he was engaged in the Abstract business. When quite advanced in years he sold his business and retired from active life. Since then he had spent most of his time in Texas and Oklahoma with his nephews, Rev. John Abernathy and brother, whom he loved as if his own children. He was a most devoted church worker and the Sunday School work was always a special delight to him. By precept and by example he taught the gospel of the Savior of men. His body was shipped to Cassville for interment and arrived Thursday and was taken to the home of his niece, Mrs. J. B. Hessee. The funeral was held Friday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. Robert Kyle of Carthage. Note

Giles Co., TN
Jan. 23, 1922 Research Note: His stone reads M. S., but his name was Milton S. Son of John Young Abernathy and Matilda Sharp Alexander. In 1900 Milton S. Abernathy, age 56, reported his birthday as Aug. 1843, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in NC. He was single and a boarder of William L. Marbut. - April 11, 1908, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - A Revolutionary Gun: We stepped into Milt Abernathy's harness shop, last Saturday and discovered two old looking guns and while looking at them, Milt said that gun in the corner, was carried through the revolutionary war by my Grand-father Abernathy. It is a flint-lock, barrel four feet long and was originally a rifle but has been bored out and is now a shot gun. The gun when new was a fine piece of workmanship, and was manufactured in Liverpool, England. This gun was carried by Milt's grandfather in the Battles of Lexington, Bunker Hill, Cowpens and many other battles of that war. He said his grandfather was one of the squad that arrested Benedict Arnold and carried this gun. The gun is in very good repair for the age, and only needs a new flint and some powder in the pan to do execution. - Jan. 5, 1911, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Milt Abernathy is back from a visit in Tennessee and at his old stand making harness. - May 30, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - Milt Abernathy, who is now in the soldiers home at Leavenworth, Kan., came to Cassville Tuesday to visit Arch Hessee and family. - Top of Stone Note

SSW: Alta Pearl - Research Note: According to his death certificate his father was Andrew Jackson Anderson and his mother's name was Martha. Pearl Anderson was his wife's name. He married Pearl Davidson, of Exeter, Feb. 6, 1901 in Exeter, Barry Co., MO, by J. M. Anderson, M. G. On the cause of his death it was listed as senility and he was listed as doing odd jobs. On the death certificate Jerry Ross of Cassville, MO, was the informant. His mother was Martha Shepherd, born in OH. - Cassville, First 150 Years By Senator Emery Melton - Andrew Jackson Anderson, came to Cassville during the Civil War, married here and reared six sons. No history of Cassville would be complete without a mention of this family. Bert Anderson, the long-time engineer of the Cassville and Exeter RR, was probably a nephew of Andrew Jackson Anderson. Andrew Jackson, who died Sept. 1924, left six sons, James W.; Daniel; Charles; Virgil; Sherman; and Jack. None of the six were community leaders nor did they amass a lot of property. They were simply good, honest, law abiding and upright members of the community. As was the custom in the first part of this century, some of the brothers acquired nicknames by which they were commonly known. Charles was one who was a good conversationalist filled with a great deal of humor. At one time he reputedly operated a small eating place on the east side of Main Street, just off Gravel Street in the Smith-Hayes Addition in the north part of Cassville. Early in this century, two adjacent landowners south of Chili's residence experienced difficulty in deciding where the property line was and this resulted in each building a fence with a space in between. the space was very narrow and Chili dubbed the results as "the tick lane", only wide enough for a tick to negotiate. A man named Brooks lived on the corner of Hwy 37 and 16th St. just east of the Anderson home. Chili did not own an automobile, and since he visited downtown almost every day, he frequently caught a ride north up Main St., which was the highway. The driver always asked where Chili wanted to get out of the car (even if the driver knew) and Chili's answer was always the same. "Just let me out at the Brooks crossing north of tick lane. The Mayor of Burlington and I took over in 1914 when there was not a thing there, but blue racer snakes and lightening bugs and ????on a paying basis. Virgil, Affectionally known as "Soldier" was a handyman during his long life. He lived and died as a bachelor. Virgil, (known as Dock) was a white-haired nice looking man who served as City Collector for many years. He and his ??? live on a 40 acre farm north of the railroad tracks adjacent to the west city limits. Jack Anderson, the youngest of the family, known as "little Jack" in later life went to LA where he operated a rice farm. Death Certificate

Wife of Andrew Jackson Anderson. - Cassville Democrat, Saturday, Feb. 21, 1920 - Death is stalking around in our land and is indiscriminately visiting home and carrying away some loved one, leaving bleeding hearts and removing a link of life, that can never again be welded. ATKISSON, Jessie (BURTON) Jan. 9, 1874 Aug. 16, 1900
St. Louis, MO
Inscription: "Wife of R. A. Atkisson" - Research Note: Cassville Republican, Thursday, August 23, 1900 - Mrs. Jessie Atkisson, wife of Robert Atkisson, died Thursday morning of last week at the Mayfield sanitarium at St. Louis, where she had been taken a few before her treatment. The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Burton and was born January 9, 1874. In early life she became a member of the Christian Church and was an energetic worker in the course. A short time after her marriage to Robert Atkisson in 1898, her health began to fail and for the past two years she had been a constant sufferer. Everything known made of science was done for her, but it became evident that her life was slowly ebbing away. Upon consultation it was decided to take her to St. Louis where an operation was performed. AT first the indications were hopeful, but only for a short time. The relapse came and she sank into that sleep that knows no earthly awakening. The remains were brought to Cassville, Friday morning and the funeral services held at 8:30 p.m. the Cassville Band of which the grief stricken husband, was a member, attended the services and escorted the cortege to the church and from there to the cemetery. Rev. Cocharan delivered a beautiful eulogy to the memory of the departed. The deceased was well known and dearly loved. She was an estimable lady of rare attainments. She leaves a husband and little daughter to mourn her loss. - Jessie Stone Headstone
