May 24, 2000 Dallas, TX |
Inscription: "M SGT US ARMY - WW II" - Research Note: Buried next to Meredith G. Terry. Address given was Farmers Branch, TX. Son of Michael Andrew Terry and Zola Katherine Johnson. - Probably Monett Times, Feb. 1, 1943 - Sergeant Jack Terry, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Terry of Monett was one of four people who broadcast birthday greetings to President Roosevelt over a CBS hookup direct from England. Two wounded American boys broadcast from a hospital at Bristow and Terry and a nurse broadcast from London on the same program. Jack said in his part of the broadcast, which probably lasted about a minute, that he had almost forgotten this was the president's birthday, he had been so busy. He said that he had been working in an office, but he supposed that soon the office would be moved. He said he was anxious to "get this thing finished". He stated that he would like to send his best wishes to the President on his birthday and he bet that there is a lot of German Sergeants that didn't wish that for Hitler. The broadcast came in clearly and every word he spoke could be heard distinctly. Many Monettans heard the broadcast as he had sent a cablegram to his parents notifying them that he was to talk. He was introduced as being from Monett, MO. | Monett Cemetery Records SS Claims Index News Item Phyllis Long Monett Historical Society Photo |

THOMAS, Jo Ann (JONES) | May 28, 1934 Monett, Barry Co., MO |
Dec. 24, 2021 Oak Pointe Care, Monett, Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: She was the daughter of the late Jerry Edward Jones and the late Flossie May (Pruitt) Jones. Although scarcely 15, Jo Ann fell in love at first sight with the energetic and lanky new employee at her father's iron and metal company, Burl Dean Thomas Junior, known as "Punk", and one hot summer day, June 25th, 1950, they married. They were so young and silly, that their friends, including Dean Powell, "chivareed" them with pranks that involved Burl pushing Jo Ann down Broadway in a wheelbarrow. It was, in fact, the same day that the Korean War was declared and a few months later, Burl was drafted into the United States Army, and Jo Ann completed her high school days as a married woman. They were kept apart by war for nearly two years. Throughout the busy years of raising children, Jo Ann was The Boss of Ed Jones Garage and Wrecker Service, "manning" the phones, sending out the statements, sending Burl out in blizzards in the middle of night to rescue motorists, balancing the books and keeping the employees in line. Throughout the busy years of wrecker service, Jo Ann was at The Center of the First Free Will Baptist Church activities - playing the piano and organ. She was the treasurer. She led the Women's Auxiliary and hosted the visiting missionaries. She led the Youth Groups and baked the cakes and sent the meals and visited the sick and wept with those who lost their loved ones. During the last few years, after Burl, her lifelong companion passed on, Jo Ann's memory faltered and she - and her beautiful baby grand piano - moved to Oak Pointe Assisted Care in Monett and we came to love our Jo Ann as she was then - living in the moment, still very feisty, still lovable. Still singing until her very last day on Earth - Christmas Eve. Dearest Jo Ann and Burl shared 63 years together. He preceded her in death February 7, 2014. She is survived by their three children. | Buchanan Funeral Home Phyllis Long |
