At the time of his enlistment, Joseph lived at Richview, Washington Co., IL, age 22, single, farmer, born Washington Co., IL, joined Aug. 13, 1862 at Richview, IL for 3 years, mustered in Sept. 18, 1862 at Camp Marshall, IL, and mustered out on June 6, 1865 at Washington DC. - U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Record for Joseph M Newman - His nearest relative was Nellie M. SSW: Helen Marie - Inscription: "Married July 16, 1950" - Research Note: He was the son of the late Roy and Etta (Scott) Nichols. His family moved to Monett when he was thirteen months old. He married Helen Ballay on Sunday, July 16, 1950 at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Monett. Bob retired as Warehouse Manager and Purchasing agent at Friend Tire Company after forty years. He is a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen on Thursday, March 4, 2004, two sisters, Christine DePriest and Mary Terrell and one brother, Jack Nichols. He second married Clara (Burks) Blackburn on Friday, May 22, 2009 in Aztec, New Mexico. Bob served his country honorably with the Army National Guard achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was a great lover of country and bluegrass music, playing with Country Colors Band, he was on the board of directors at McDowell Golden Jubilee for over thirty years. He was an avid muzzle loader and trap shooter receiving several first place awards. Buchanan Funeral Home

Research Note: He was son of the late Roy Bell Nichols and Etta Anna (Scott) Nichols. Jack had attended school in Monett and served his country honorably during the 1950's in the National Guard. As a young man, he had worked for the Monett Police Department. For many years, Jack also worked with the Monett Volunteer Fire Department. On February 21, 1953, Jack married Peggy Lee Curtis. To this union, three children were born. Jack and Peggy were blessed with over sixty-one years together. Jack was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine DePriest and Mary Terrell. Throughout her working years, Peggy had been a Secretary for Sam Gardner Law Firm, Tyson Foods and was a Manager for an apartment complex. Lastly, she had worked at Silver Dollar City for over six years. On February 21, 1953, Peggy married Jack Nichols. To this union, three children were born.
