The 1910 Census Kings Prairie, Barry Co., MO has Andy McCormack age 36, born MO, married 16 years, farmer, father born TN, mother NC, with wife Dora, age 32 born IL, and children Edith age 14, Juda age 11, Orvil age 8, Noel age 6, Clyde age 2, and Mamie age 1, all born MO. - Cassville Democrat, June 19, 1909 - 1 Dead, 7 Hurt: Andrew A. McCormick, Dead. The tornado formed on Capps Creek, two miles South and one mile east of Pierce City near Mr. Heunegan's and traveled in a northeasterly direction. The dead body of Mr. McCormack was found in a pond 12 yards southeast of the site of the house a short time after. J. J. Lauderdale had a bad place on the head where he had been hit. The seven McCormick children were thrown on the wood pile, a distance of thirty yards, and were injured. There was a lot of damage done and listed was that Fleming Dummit and Dave Thomas had found two cat fish that were blown out of McCormick's pond, 1/4 of a mile from the pond. And a number of small catfish were found ten or fifteen yards from the pond. Glass fruit jars were found 1/4 mile from McCormick's but not broken. Steve Courdin's barn 1 1/4 miles southwest of McCormick's was entirely destroyed. Chas. Carlin's orchard was damaged to the extent of a row of trees 100 yards wide through the orchard which were laid to the ground. Andrew A. McCormick was born and reared around Monett, and was held in high esteem and respect by all who knew him. He was honest, good to his family, and a good neighbor. Besides his seven children he leaves four brothers, W. T., R. R., J. L., and John A. McCormick and two sisters Mrs. Martin Jenkins and Mrs. Allie Park. Mrs. McCormick died about two years ago. Research Note: Dr. C. J. McCormick, 80, retired longtime Monett veterinarian and civic leader died at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield. He was one of 12 children of Cleveland Justice McCormick and Minnie Ethel (White) McCormick. He graduated from Holland High School and enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1942, serving in World War II with the 600th squadron of the 398 Bomb Group. He served as a co-pilot on a B-17 bomber and completed 25 missions over Germany. Following his discharge as a Second Lieutenant in 1945, he received his B.S. in Agriculture from University of Missouri - Columbia. He taught agriculture at Poplar Bluff High School for two years. Then he returned to the University of Missouri where he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1952. In that same year he established his veterinary practice in Monett, first practicing from his home and later establishing Monett Veterinary Clinic, 215 Dairy Street. He practiced for 32 years, retiring in 1983. In 1967, while attending college at the University of Arkansas, he married Vicki Henbest. Together they moved to Columbia, Missouri, where he graduated with distinction from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1976, serving as student body president during his senior year. After practicing veterinary medicine for three years in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Don returned to Monett where he joined his father's veterinary practice and led in the establishment of the nationally recognized Monett Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Don himself received national and international recognition through various articles published in veterinary journals. Research Note: Buried next to Nannie L. Means. - Goodspeed's 1888 History: Dr. Thomas J. Means, a member of the firm of Means and Co., druggists, of Monett, MO, was born in Monroe Co., KY, in 1822, and is the only one living of a family of ten children born to the marriage of Thomas Means and Mary Mulkey. Thomas Means was of Irish descent, and born in PA in 1772. When ten years of age he went to VA, where he was reared to manhood. He became a farmer, and prior to his marriage went to East TN. Thence in 1796 he immigrated to Monroe Co., KY,, where he spent the remainder of his life, passing away in 1846. He was one of the pioneers of East TN, where he assisted in fighting the red men, and also settled in KY when the nearest milling point was over 100 miles distant. His wife, who was of English origin, was born in TN in 1778, and died in 1856. Thomas J. Means made his home with his parents, assisting them on the farm, as long as they lived. In 1858 he as united in marriage with Emma Taylor, a native of OH, who was born in 1835. In 1847 Dr. Means commenced the study of medicine, and the following year left his native State, coming to Barry Co. He located in the western part of the county, and in 1852 entered upon the practice of his profession, having been engaged in farming prior to this time. During the late war he was in IL, soon after which he went back to KY. About 1875 he went to KS, and in 1878 returned to Barry Co. In 1887 he settled in the rapidly growing town of Monett, where he established a drug store and has since resided. His first wife died in 1868, and in 1883 he was married again, choosing for his second wife Mrs. Nannie Leonard, a native of TN. Dr. Means is one of the substantial citizens of the county, and is well respected. In religious belief he is a Universalist, and is a member of the Masonic fraternity. Myers married Martha Ellen Feagan on Sept. 19, 1872 in Coles Co., IL. - Cassville Republican, March 15, 1894 - H. H. Myers Killed: While at work in the sandstone quarry, one mile south-west of the city at nine o'clock, Friday, H. H. Myers was caught beneath falling rock and instantly killed. It is not known at what hour he met his death, but from the condition of the body, it is supposed he had been dead at least two hours when found by a passing farmer, who discovered his feet sticking out from beneath the huge rock which had fallen. The body was conveyed to his house, in the north part of town. He leaves a wife and four children. The funeral will occur tomorrow.
