JAGLOWITZ, Joseph John | Sept. 22, 1930 South Bend, IN |
Oct. 3, 2022 MO |
SSW: Barbara E. - Inscription: "Wed Feb. 11, 1956" - Research Note: Son of Joseph Lawrence and Frieda Jaglowitz. His father worked at the Studebaker auto plant and his mother was a seamstress. The family moved to northern Wisconsin due to the great depression and became farmers. Joe attended elementary school in Radisson, Wisconsin as a youngster. During World War 2, the family moved again, this time to Chicago Illinois. Joe attended Mount Carmel Catholic High School and graduated in 1948. Joe's first serious employment was as a trainee in the insurance investigation division of the Illinois Central Railroad. When the Korean War began, Joe decided to enlist in the U.S. Air Force (1951). He initially trained as an aircraft mechanic. He also trained as a flight crewman for B-29 bombers and served in Florida and Texas. Though the Korean war was ongoing, Joe never received orders overseas. He spent his four-year enlistment stateside. Upon his return to civilian life (1955), he resumed his position with the Illinois Central Railroad, where he met Barbara Smith, a secretary. The two of them began dating and soon married. Joe moved on from the railroad and happened to fall into a position with a boxboard manufacturer. The plant manager liked Joe and asked him if he was interested in training for a position as a package designer. He said yes and that began his new career in the field of package engineering. Joe had a distinguished career as a package designer culminating with his last job before retirement as a consultant. He flew all over North America inspecting manufacturing plants of all kinds and making evaluations and recommendations to improve manufacturing efficiency. One of the destinations he visited was the Schreiber Cheese plant in Monett, MO. Joe liked the area and brought real estate brochures back to Chicago to show to Barbara. Soon, the two had purchased a retirement home just west of Monett. They sold their house in Illinois and moved to Missouri (1995). Barbara and Joe's love is evident in their forty-eight-year marriage which ended with her death in 2004 (cancer). Joe is preceded in death by his wife Barbara, father Joseph Lawrence, his mother Frieda, sister Dorothy, sister Rose, sister Marcella, and sister Eleanor. | Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home Phyllis Long Monett Historical Society Photo |

JEFFRIES, Earl B. | Nov. 27, 1889 Monett, Barry Co., MO |
Apr. 3, 1914 Monett, Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Buried next to Bryon Jeffries. He was single and the son of Leroy Jeffries, born Bentonville, AR, and Mary Turpin. He was a railroad switchman and found dead from a railroad accident. - Cassville Republican, April 9, 1914 - Earl B. Jeffries, a young switchman, was killed by falling under some moving cars, Friday night about 11 o'clock. It's not known just how he met death. He was last seen by the crew he was working with riding on top of a box car. The trainmen were looking for a signal from him and on receiving no sign, went back to see what the trouble was. His dead body was found by the track with his head crushed. It is thought that he fell between the cars and several cars passed over him. The remains were taken to Callaway's undertaking rooms to be cared for. Coroner James King decided an inquest was not necessary. Funereal services were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday, April 5, at the Baptist church. Rev. W. A. Todd, the pastor, had charge of he service. Interment was made in Westbay's Cemetery by the grave of his little brother who died a number of years ago. The death of this young man is one of the saddest that has ever occurred in Monett. He was a large fine looking boy, physically perfect, of quiet a retiring disposition, kindly and manly. He lived an exemplary life and was the idol of his parents and sisters. His death is a crushing blow to the family. Earl was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Jeffries and was born November 27, 1889. He was at his death 24 years, 4 months and 6 days old. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters, Letha and Lelah. He had worked as switch tender for several years and had recently been promoted to switchman. He was faithful to his duties and well liked by his associates. - Cassville Republican, April 9, 1914 - Earl B. Jan. 19, 1921 Monett, Barry Co., MO |
SSW: Thomas H. - Research Note: The death certificate states that she was the widow of Thomas Jeffries and she was a daughter of William Ricketts, born PA, and Jane Harris, born Scotland. Bertha Jeffries, her daughter, of Monett, MO was the informant. Mary Jane's obit is on the "Focus on Monett" page. - Monett Times - Mrs. T.H. Jeffries, age 81 years, died at her home 200 Main street at 11:20 o'clock, Wednesday night, January 19. She had been an invalid for fifteen years. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock, Friday afternoon, January 21, at the home. Internment will be made at Oakdale cemetery. Rev. J. F. King will have charge of the services. Mary Jane Ricketts was born near Fosterville, Tenn., April 23, 1839. She moved with her parents to Bentonville, Ark., when a child, going most of the way by boat. She was married to Dr. T. H. Jeffries at Bentonville, October 27, 1858. They were the parents of eight children, two of whom died in infancy. The children surviving their parents are Mrs. J. H. Wormington, J. L. Jeffries and Miss Bertha Jeffries, of Monett; Leroy Jeffries and Mrs. F. N. Reese, of Cassville and Mrs. L. B. Jones of Neosho. Two brothers survive her – Harvey Ricketts, of Pea Ridge, Ark., and Nack Ricketts, of Wyoming. Dr. Jeffries, her husband, died August 12, 1902, and Mrs. Jeffries and Miss Bertha Jeffries had made their home together at the old home place since that time. Mrs. Jeffries saw many hardships in her early life. The family went to Arkansas in the early day and lived the frugal life of the pioneers. She was a young mother during the Civil war and as her husband was drafted into the Confederate Army and later escaped to join the Union Army, she was left alone in the wilderness to care for her little ones. She lived near the Pea Ridge battlefield, and saw many of the horrors of that terrible battle, and helped with her own hands to bury the dead. She was a woman of great courage and resourcefulness and bravely did the duties that came to her. After the war the family moved to Corsicana, Barry county, Mo., and later to Washburn. They came to Plymouth Junction, now Monett, when the station was established and Mrs. Jeffries conducted a boarding house, while her husband practiced his profession and looked after business interests. The older railroad men remember the excellent meals served by this industrious woman. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for a number of years and was a good Christian woman. She was firm in her faith and was ready and willing to go when death came. She was a charter member of Monett Chapter Eastern Star No. 190. She not only reared her own family but was a mother to several other children, caring for them the same as her own. Through her long invalidism she never lost her remarkable courage and did not take to her bed until Christmas day, when the frail body refused longer to support her. All her children were with her in her last hours and the end was quiet and peaceful. | Death Certificate Online Obit Phyllis Long Monett Historical Society Photo |
