Thomas Hash, Verona, MO, was the informant on the death certificate. - Sept. 14 1955, Joplin Globe - JOHN ANDREW HASH, 80, OF NEAR MONETT DIES MONETT, MO - John Andrew Hash, 80 years old, died at 4 o'clock this morning following a heart attack at his home, 5 miles northeast of Monett, where he had lived two years. Surviving are a son, Tommy Hash of Monett; two brothers, Reuben Hash and Roscoe Hash of Broken Arrow, Okla; two sisters Mrs. Deal Davis of Wasola, MO, and Mrs. Virginia Forrest of Harrison, Ark., and a grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Bennett-Wormington funeral home chapel. The Rev. James Davis will officiate and burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. - John Hash first married Ida Hutchison on Mar. 15, 1898 in Ozark Co., MO. His second wife was Rhoda Eary I. SSW: Ella D. - Research Note: Son of John Hawkins and Elizabeth Rutherford. He first married Harriet Agnes McFarland in GA, died in 1877. He second married Mary/Mamie Bryan buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. Her Inscription: "In Memory of Mary Bryan Hawkins - Wife of A. S. And Dau. of Chas. S. and M. W. Bryan", died 1889. She is buried next to her parents Charles Shephard and Mildred (Wear) Bryan. He third married Sarah Clemantine Lassiter on June 2, 1892 in Exeter, Barry Co., MO, died 1894. He fourth married Ella (Dale) Baker. - Cassville Republican, July 29, 1937 - Dr. Alex S. Hawkins, a physician and surgeon in Cassville 50 years ago, and later for many years at Monett, where he was surgeon for the Frisco Railroad Company, died at his late home in Clermont, Fla., Friday, July 23, age 86 years. His body was brought back to Monett for burial. Coming to Cassville in the early Eighties, Dr. Hawkins formed a partnership for the practice of his profession with Dr. D. L. Mitchell, who had come to Cassville from Georgia and located for the practice of medicine. After a number of years of successful practice here, Dr. Hawkins moved to Monett and continued practice and also served as Frisco surgeon until he retired, when he moved to Florida. Dr. Hawkins married a Cassville young lady, Miss Mamie Bryan. To them one daughter, Ruth, was born. Mrs. Hawkins lived only a few years. Ruth is now Mrs. Ruth Kates who lives at Claremore, Okla. Dr. Hawkins had been very active for a man of his years, until a few days before his death when he took suddenly ill of a bronchial trouble. He was born at Roswell, Ga., in 1851. He studied medicine and when young in the practice came to Barry county which continued to be his home until about 12 years ago when he went to Florida. After retiring as Frisco surgeon and moving to Florida, he again took up the practice of medicine and continued until his fatal illness. His body arrived in Monett Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Monett Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Dr. Wm. Riley Nelson. A large crowd of old friends attended the services. Burial was in Oakdale cemetery. Dr. Hawkins was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and the Blue Lodge at Monett gave the Masonic burial services at the grave, Knight Templars acting as escorts. - July 3, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Miss Ruth Hawkins came up from Claremore, Okla., Sunday to spend time with her father, Dr. A. S. Hawkins. She was recently operated on for appendicitis and has made a good recovery. Jane was just shy of her 96th birthday. Now she is reunited with her husband, Henry O. Head, Sr., whom she married on April 14, 1944. For years, Jane and Heno had a vision to reach young people for Christ. So, in 1973 they opened Camp Soaring Hawk, a Christian sports camp for children ages 8-15. Through their efforts, hundreds of kids came to know and love Jesus. The Camp Soaring Hawk family of believers will always remember and be grateful to Jane and Heno for their faithful service to God. Jane attended several colleges—a fact she was quick to joke about—Mississippi State College for Women, Southwestern in Memphis (now Rhodes College), Louisiana State University, and Missouri Southern State College, from which she graduated in 1977 with a degree in art. Jane was a member of Chi Omega sorority, PEO, Daughters of the American Revolution, and First United Methodist Church in Monett, Missouri. Most recently, she was a volunteer for Jesus Was Homeless, a ministry that reaches out to the unemployed and underemployed in Branson, Missouri. She used her art degree well, "doodling" on "happy meal" bags to cheer up children who receive meals from JWH. Military Stone Inscription: "5 MO - S M CAV" - Research Note: Buried next to Emma, Pearl, and David Hess. His parents were not named on the death certificate but both born Germany. L. R. Hess was the informant. - Son of Harmon Hiram Hess and Elizabeth Kessing. John Hess married Emma Kester on Apr. 25, 1874 in Lafayette Co., MO. They lived in Kansas before moving to Monett around 1888 and opened a brickyard. They later operated a hotel for railroad passengers. - Cassville Republican, June 24, 1915 - Old Citizen Passes Away: John Hess, an old citizen of Monett, and for many years proprietor of the Hess Hotel, died suddenly at his home on Eleventh and Bond streets, Sunday. His death was caused by paralysis. Mr. Hess had been in failing health the past three years but was able to be up and about town a part of the time. On Sunday all his daughters were at home and they were having a happy reunion, the father being the most pleased one because of the presence of his children. In the afternoon he was a sick man with the fatal disease. Mr. Hess was 68 years old and was born in Hamburg, Germany. He leaves a wife and nine children. They are Mrs. Harry Mountain of Kansas City, Mrs. John Lamb, of Ft. Scott, Kan., Mrs. Owen Conley of south of Monett, Ben Hess of Sapulpa, Okla., Grant Hess of Goddard Kan., Lawrence Hess of Kansas City, Miss Olga, Miss Myrtle and Arthur Hess, who are still at home. He attended Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO and continued his degree, graduating from John A. Gupton of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN, in 1960. Doug enlisted in the United States Army in 1961, serving his country honorably until his discharge in 1964. He worked for Sheil Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO for three years, returning to Monett in 1967 to become the owner of Hobson Shoe Store in downtown Monett. In 1980, Doug and Bernadine became co-owners of Buchanan Funeral Home, partnering with Mike and Glenda Hemphill, until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was also a member and past President of the Monett Lions Club, the Monett Jaycees and the Monett Historical Society, as well as a member of the American Legion Post #91 and previously served on the Monett Chamber of Commerce Board. On March 27, 1959 in Monett, Doug married Bernadine Cantrell. To this union, two sons were born. Research Note: Daughter of Jimmie and Lois Hughes. Annalee attended Bolivar High School, then later graduated from Southwest MO State University in Springfield with her bachelor's in education degree. Annalee met Charles William Huntress, Jr. of Bolivar on a blind date. The couple married within months, on a scorching hot July day in 1955. They moved to Memphis, TN, where she taught elementary school while he attended the Southern College of Optometry. After his graduation, they returned to MO and raised their family in Monett. Annalee taught elementary school for decades in Bolivar, Memphis, Pierce City, and Monett. Through the years she stayed active in the community, participating in PTA, MSTA, and the PEO Sisterhood. She volunteered extensively with Meals on Wheels, the Monett Museum, the hospital auxiliary in Monett, and in various roles at church. She was proud to be an election officiant. She loved to travel, enjoyed playing bridge, always had a good novel or two going, and was an avid sports fan. In later years, she especially adored her Lady Bears, the St. Louis Cardinals, and those Kansas City Chiefs. Annalee was known for her witty poems and found great delight in positively impacting the lives of children, especially her own as mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her husband, Bill Huntress, preceded her in death, as did her parents, Jimmie and Lois Hughes, nephew Jimmy Parrott, sister Marilyn Parrott, and her sister-in-law, Marilyn Shanahan. Research Note: He was the son of Charles and Mabel (Cunningham) Huntress. The family moved to Bolivar, MO, after he graduated from high school. Charles attended Southwest Baptist College, Drury College, and The University of Missouri. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. In 1955, he and Annalee Hughes married, and the newlyweds moved to Memphis, TN, so he could attend the Southern College of Optometry. After graduation, they settled in Monett to establish his optometric practice and raise their family. At Monett's First Baptist Church, he served on various committees and as Sunday School teacher for the Fellowship Class. He was a long time member of the Monett Area Sheltered Workshop and the Monett Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the philanthropic Shrine Brotherhood for over fifty years, and especially enjoyed performing in community parades as a member of the Barry County Trike Club. The several professional organizations he was associated with include the Southwest Missouri and the Missouri Optometric Associations, and the American Optometric Association. Charles maintained two working optometric practices, having established an office in Greenfield, MO, as well. Pneumonia and meningitis was the cause of death. - Cassville Republican, May 5, 1910 - G. Forest Hutchinson died at his home in west Monett at 11:40 Sunday morning, May 1. His death was caused by pneumonia. G. F. Hutchison, son of Daniel and Julia Hutchison was born July 17, 1874 and died May 1, 1910, age 35 years. The funeral was held at the Christian Church, May 2, conducted by Rev. R. H. Love. The Modern Woodman of America of which the deceased was an honored member attended the funeral in a body. Interment was made in Westbay Cemetery. Mr. Hutchison leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, and little son, Glen.
