Research Note: Son of John Tillman and Lydia Hudson. W. E. Tillman of Seligman, MO was the informant on the death certificate. Cause of death was suicide by cutting jugular vein. Death for his wife gives Emily (Reed) Tillman born Feb. 3, 1851 Barry Co., MO, died Sept. 19, 1912 Sugar Creek Twp., Barry Co., MO. Daughter of William Reed born MO and Hailey Scott born IL. A. J. Tillman of Seligman, MO was the informant on the death certificate. Cause of death was murdered by D. Tillman. Throat cut and jugular vein severed. Buried at Trent Cemetery. (Obit says Reed Cemetery.) - Cassville Republican, September 26, 1912 - Dave Tillman, who killed his wife, Thursday morning at 8 o'clock, Sept 26, by cutting her throat at the home of their son, Jack Tillman, one mile north of Seligman, was found dead Monday morning about two hundred yards from the scene of the crime. It is apparent that he committed suicide by cutting his throat soon after committing his deed. The cause for the murder of his wife came from renewing a feeling of unity which had darkened their marriage life for many years. Tillman had been in accusation for the past few years to leave his wife for many months at a time and then returning to remain only a few weeks. On account of his little respect for home, Mrs. Tillman had been living for some time with her son, Jack Tillman, who was at Joplin at the time of this act. Mrs. Jack Tillman states that Mr. and Mrs. Tillman appeared to be in a pleasant mood that morning, attending to the duties of the home, until abut 8 o'clock when she noticed them scuffling in an adjoining room and saw him perform the deed that instantly killed his wife. Mrs. Jack Tillman ran immediately to her nearest neighbor and told the news which soon brought many of their neighbors to the scene of the crime. Tillman made his disappearance, giving Sheriff Newman and other officials careful search in the surrounding country and parts of Oklahoma, until his body was found by his two sons, Monday morning about 11 o'clock lying in a patch of under brush in sight of the house. Mrs. Tillman was 62 years old and was a highly respected citizen. Tillman was a man of 64 years of age and was of a quite disposition. They leave a family of three children. They are Harry Tillman, of Carterville; Mrs. Rose Garland of Pierce City and Jack Tillman of Seligman. The body of Mrs. Tillman was buried in the Reed cemetery and the remains of Tillman were buried Monday evening at the New Salem Cemetery. Obit

WASSON, Joseph England July 4, 1813
Rhea Co., TN
July 11, 1891
Barry Co., MO
Inscription: "Age 78 Y'rs 7 D's" - Research Note: Son of John A. Wasson and Vesta Zippora England. Joseph E. Wasson married Margaret Gibson on Jan. 2, 1845 in Barry Co., MO. Joseph's will is online at ancestry.com. - Notes from ancestry.com: Notes pertaining to Joseph England WASSON, his brother, John Addison WASSON. Joseph England WASSON and John Addison WASSON served with the Tennessee Mounted Volunteers under Capt. Miles Verson (sp?), Col. Wm. Lindsay, from July 12, 1837, to July 12, 1838, both being discharged for severe illness. Joseph England WASSON wrote diaries while in this service and afterwards, basically describing the horrible duties he and his brother were assigned to and how sickly they both became in having to carry out the orders given them (or be killed by the military if they did not) relating to the Fla. Indian War and the "Indian round-up" and removal. They honestly suffered from a malarial type of illness, the weather being so hot and humid, and bug bitten so many times, they became accustomed to being bitten up. They also suffered from severe dysentery, and severe guilt. They both had been forced to join and neither agreed with the policies being carried out by the military against the native peoples. Joseph mentioned many men who were also forced to join, like him and his brother, and said many of them had deserted and joined forces with the "Indians" they were suppose to kill or capture. He and his brother desperately wanted to return home, so they couldn't join the "Indians" because if they did, they would have to commit to staying there, probably being adopted as brothers and continuing the fighting to defend the native people, maybe for years, maybe dying before they could get back to their family. Instead, Joseph and John wanted to go back to their family as soon as possible and tell everyone what was going on in the southeast, that surely every one of those responsible for such evil would be punished and cast out of the country, killed, or put away forever when regular people found out. He also related that since his father had many times reminded them that they had "Indian" blood" in them and admonished them to remember the native people's position as defenders of their own and their kinsmen's land and rights in all of their business, personal and otherwise, that his insides were busting with guilt at being made to take part in the military position and actions against the natives. He said the sickness put upon him and his brother were the least punishment he expected to suffer from the hand of God, and that his future surely would be spending eternity in Hell. He noted that it was the most cruel, evil, brutal thing imaginable, and certainly led by the henchmen of Satan himself. He said that the horrible abuse, torture and outright ungodly deeds of the politicians, land owners and military done to and heaped upon the "Indians" - Creeks, Seminoles, Cherokees, and others, were surely not known of and not approved of by any honest, good man on earth or in Heaven, and that he wanted nothing more than for God and his angels to strike down the sons of Satan then and there and put the country into the hands of truly good, honest, God-loving men. He later expressed deep sorrows, his utter shame and his nightmares of that experience to his family and others, and his lifetime of heartache and disappointment in most "regular people", in finding out just how evil were the hearts and souls of so many "regular people". Joseph spent a long time traveling, visiting family in TN and IL areas, commiserating and collecting information about his family history, and becoming more knowledgeable about American politics, saying later he had been seriously considering getting heavily involved in politics, but determined the whole lot of the political organization in America was based on such evil and lying that he could not be a party to it. [2.] Joseph and John are said be some to have disappeared between 1838 and 1844, but many believe that during that time, they both tried to get people involved in turning around the country's policies against Indians, but only got more distressed and disillusioned with their fellow countrymen and country politics. - Joseph England WASSON, with his brother, John Addison WASSON, served in the Tennessee Mounted Volunteers under Capt. Miles Verson and Col. William Lindsay, from 12 July 1837 to 12 July 1838. This battle was called the "Florida Indian War." The soldiers' job was to round up Indians for removal to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. The WASSON brothers served at Ft. Cass, Ft. Poinset, Ross Landing, etc. Joseph E. WASSON said it was the most brutal thing anyone could imagine, and he was sorefully ashamed to be a part of such things done to the Indians. He said that he respected the Creeks, Seminoles and Cherokees for their honesty, intelligence and their general respect for everyone, that any intelligent person would understand why anyone would try to defend their land, especially after having given up so much of it already, and he and a number of other soldiers actually got together and decided to help the Indians in anything they could do. They became informers to the Indians, and even were put in the situation of fighting the government soldiers, on the side of the Seminoles, a few times, and were very lucky to get away from it with only a little damage. "In the many confusions and lost companies of the government, probably because a good number of the soldiers were quite sickened by having to fight on behalf of such evil, so many were genuinely good men, and got lost on purpose, the government officers actually ordered their own men murdered if found, for not following their orders explicitly, that is, to find and murder as many Indians as possible, so they would not have to take hostage so many as they could not control them. I was taken prisoner by the military and threatened with such murder if I did not report to my officers and tell them what I knew. I claimed to have been very ill due to dissentery and the heat, and requested to be discharged and allowed to go home. That request was denied, but I then was assigned with my company to move north with some of the captive Indians in ropes. We were on horses and leading these battered and terribly abused Indians by ropes as they walked. Some had been loaded into wagons and I would have preferred to have driven one of those wagons. I could not help but cry and ask forgiveness from Heaven for what I had become part of. The abuse and torture and thievery and such extreme evil heaped upon the Indians, Creeks, Seminoles, Cherokee. Most Cherokees were smarter than any army officers. I have known many bloodthirsty white men, with no reason to be so cruel as they were, but known none Indians that were even half so." Joseph and his brother had been mustered into service after being taken to the "Cherokee Agency," and heard what would happen if they did not join the military. But, after going North to Georgia, he stopped and could not stop from crying. He refused any more to be a part of it, and said his religion and God would not let him serve the military any further. He couldn't eat nor sleep and he was in line for death's door. Many a man in the same position had been shot through the head and body by a troop of his peers for what Joseph England WASSON had done and said. He knew inside that his own family was part Indian and he had known more fine honest Indians than he had ever known as many white men to be. For the sake of his family, many who had lived as whites for years, having intermarried with them, and being fearful of just this kind of thing happening, he could not now claim his Indian kinships as reason for his disheartened condition. He was discharged with not so favorable a record, but he didn't care, and did not have to join the military in the removal of the collected Indians to the Western lands in Oklahoma. He went home by way of some other homes of his family along the way to tell of what he'd seen and to find out if any family members had been known to be seized by the government. The whereabouts of Joseph England WASSON is not known now for the years from 1838 to 1844. His brother, John Addison WASSON with whom he had army service, and who was likewise discharged for similar reasons, moved to Illinois in 1844. Other family had memories of stories of him traveling to visit various family branches and relaying his stories to them. In the Fall of 1844, Joseph England WASSON appeared at Verona, MO. An annual camp meeting was going on at the site of what is now known as Lee Cemetery. Margaret M. GIBSON was leading the singing and he later reported to various family that upon seeing her, he felt as though a spell had been put upon him and just had to marry that tall red-haired beauty. He did on 2 Jan 1845. Their marriage license was bought at Cassville, the seat of Barry Co., MO, the Lawrence Co. seat at Mount Vernon was later set up on 14 Feb 1845. Joseph's sisters, Sarah and Louisa Adeline, were in the Verona area at the time. Sarah married Sam FERGUSON, and Louisa Adeline married 3 Dec. 1840, in Verona, MO, to Eli GIBSON, and the older brother of Margaret M. GIBSON had moved to MO with Sarah and Sam (FERGUSON). So they enjoyed family get-togethers quite often during that time. In 1866, Joseph England WASSON moved into Cassville, and bought Lot 46 from John and Jane Packwood, and lived there until 1868, then they moved back to "Section 10." (24 Dec. 1845, George M. GIBSON and Mary A. GIBSON deeded to Joseph E. WASSON, W2-SW417-27-26. Joseph WASSON sold it to James Johnson, 27 Aug. 1853, and moved to Newton Co., MO. MO Marriage Records

WHITENER, Jason J. July 6, 1884
NC
July 1, 1917

Research Note: Son of Daniel Hosea Whitener and Mary Ann Seitz, buried at Seligman Cemetery. - July 7, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Oz Arnold Kills Jason Whitener - Trouble Occurs at Seligman - June 30 - Death Comes Next Day at Springfield - Jason Whitener, aged about 33 years, who was shot three times by Ozro A. Arnold, at Seligman, Saturday evening, June 30, about 7 o'clock died from the wounds in the Springfield Hospital, Sunday evening at 7:30. Whitener was shot once in the right leg; once in the abdomen, the ball glancing around. The fatal shot took effect in the neck and ranged to the base of the brain, fracturing the spinal column. The trouble between Arnold and Whitener was caused by the delivery of a barrel of beer to the wrong place. It seems that Arnold had ordered that the beer be delivered to the rear of a business house but that Whitener, who was drinking, wanted to deliver it to the Arnold and Davis garage and unload it at the front door. Whitener was there with the best and started to unload it when Ernest Davis, partner of Arnold, told him not to do so. Arnold appeared on the scene about that time and on hearing Whitener abusing Davis, asked, "What's the trouble?" Davis told him of his refusal to permit the beer to be unloaded and Arnold said, "Jason, I didn't tell you to unload this beer here." Whitener, It is said, replied with the same vile language that they both cursed each other. It is said that Arnold then threw a piece of iron at Whitener's wagon and said: "I'm going home. I don't want any trouble." Whitener followed about a block, abusing him and returned to his wagon, driving back to the depot with the beer. Arnold then went home with a piece of ice he was taking to Mrs. Arnold who is in a critical condition following an operation. In about fifteen minutes Arnold returned to the shop and shortly afterward Whitener drove up again. John Engdahl, who is the only eye witness to all the shooting tells the following regarding it: "When Jason Whitener drove up, Arnold told him to drive on. Instead of doing so he began abusing and cursing Arnold and dared him to come outside the shop. 'I am not coming out,' said Arnold, 'you drive on.' "I then started home but hearing Whitener's wagon rattle I turned around and saw him enter the garage. Arnold was backing off from him and shortly began shooting and running from him. Whitener continued to run after him, following him outside the building by a smaller door on the south." The shot which caused Whitener's death was fired outside the building. All agree that before Whitener entered the garage that Arnold threw a hammer which hit one of the mules driven to the dray causing them to run away. It is said that there had been some bad feelings between Whitener and Arnold for some time. This is said to have started over some black smith work. Jason Whitener was a son of D. H. Whitener, a highly respected citizen of Seligman, and was married to Cora Burnett, a daughter of the late Stephen Burnett, one of the county's best citizens during life. He is survived by a widow and three children, one boy and two girls, the oldest being about ten years old. When not drinking he was one of the best natured men and was a hard worker. He was a member of the M. W. A. and carried $1,000 insurance. His remains were brought back from Springfield Monday morning and interred in the New Salem Cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Arnold has lived there all his life and is known as a peaceable man but is considered high strung when mad. He has been running a black smith and machine shop for years and during the past few years opened a garage. D. H. Whitener of Seligman, was in this city Thursday and went before Squire Sons and filed information against Ozro Arnold charging murder on which he was arrested and gave bond in the sum of $5,000. The charge of assault with intent to kill, was dismissed by Squire Sons. Jake Davis, prosecuting attorney, and Claud Fuller of Eureka Springs, Ark., will prosecute and J. W. George and Jas. Talbert will defend. Preliminary will be held July 20. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, March 28, 1918 - Ozro Arnold Acquitted: Ozro Arnold who was acquitted in the justice court upon the charge of the murder of Jason Whitener of Seligman last summer, was acquitted by a jury in the circuit court here Friday. The case occupied the time of the court Thursday and Friday until about 11 o'clock when it was given to the jury. The jury was out but a short while when a verdict was returned acquitting Arnold. The jury decided from the testimony introduced that the case was one of justifiable homicide. - Cassville Democrat, Saturday, Jan. 3, 1920 - Marriage License: Sam'l S. Goldwin?
