MURRAY, John Franklin | Sept. 18, 1824 | Feb. 19, 1892 | Research Note: From James Lawrence Murray Collection - "After marriage, Jan. 3, 1850, John Franklin and Marilda (Siler) went to live with Aunt Patsy Murray on Hickory Creek near Chaska (Campbell Co, TN). With them went Joseph Huff Murray, younger brother of John Franklin Murray. No definite relationship established between Aunt Patsy and James S. Murray, but she was probably his aunt by marriage. - John Franklin Murray was a scholar and mathematician. He was the son of James Shadrack and Mary(Ruston) Murray. He was born in TN on Sept. 18, 1824. He was never too robust, but lived to be 68 years old. He and Rilda were married by Calvin R. Barrow, J. P. (Justice of the Peace), on January 3, 1850. After their marriage, they lived and farmed with his grandmother, Aunt Patsey Murray, at her farm in Big Creek Gap, near the present town of LaFollette, TN. It was Aunt Patsey who had "raised" Lucinda Evans, Rilda's mother. Aunt Patsey's real name was Martha Davis Murray, the wife of Christopher Murray. She was 86 years old when John and Rilda moved in with her. Aunt Patsey probably died soon after the birth of Rilda's first child. In her will, Aunt Patsey left her farm to a slave, called Aunt Lett, which probably accounts for the move of John and Rilda about that time across the state line into KY, where most of their children were born. In 1870, the family moved to Cole Co., MO, where Mary was born. Following her birth in 1871, they returned to TN, and remained until 1886 at which time they moved again to MO and settled at Seligman, where John F. Murray died on Feb. 18, 1892 and Rilda on July 17, 1917. Both are buried in New Salem Cemetery. John and Rilda had 11 children in all. (This is on page 10-48 and 10-49 of the Siler Family, Roots and Shoots book, published in 1882 by Theodore E. "Ted" Siler, of Springfield, MO.) J. F. and Marilda are the parents of: Jane 1861 KY, Hiram 1862 TN, John 1865 TN, Perry 1867 TN, Mary 1871 MO, ???Lucinda 1873 TN, Josephine 1878 TN. | Family History Natalie Stewart Photo Deceased Beverly Sweeney |

Murray, where she had made her home for sometime. The remains were interred late Sunday evening in New Salem Cemetery after Rev. Ph. H. Hodge of Washburn, conducted funeral services.
