Several months ago at the Deaconess hospital at Springfield where he had been taken for an operation it was found that he had contracted that dreaded disease, Sarcoma. He seemingly recovered from the operation and was brought home, but the disease had a stronger hold than was hoped and he continued to grow worse. He suffered intense pain without a murmur for weeks and months, fighting with all the nerve that a human can possess to get well, but when the disease over came the will power and Dutch saw beyond a doubt that he must go, he met it calmly as he had lived, not with fear or regret, but expressed his willingness to go and told his father and mother that all was well with him. | Headstone Cheryl Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Diana Cope |

He would be gone for several days at a time, going from community to community, and during one of these periods of time when he was away, his sister Hannah was taken suddenly ill and died of a hemorrhage. In those days means of communication were very slow and difficult and my father could not be readily located. But as he was nearing home, his violin under his arm and unaware of Hannah's death, he met a funeral procession. When he learned it was his own sister's funeral he was so shocked and in such distress of mind because of his absence from home at such a time, he vowed he would never attend another dance. He kept this vow to his dying day." - Another Photo | Note MO Marriage Records 1890 Vet. Schedule Civil War Records Phyllis Long Photo Cheryl Photo Diana Cope |
