Tom Burchett and Eston Morris of Purdy were walking on the highway and Mr. Schad was driving in the same direction and thought the boys would hear his car and get out of the way, but it seems they failed to heed or hear the noise of the car and remained in the roadway. Burchett is reported to be rather weak or absent minded. Other parties came up and among them were O. W. Williams of Monett, who assisted in getting Burchett in the car and taking him to Purdy, while Mr. Schad located a physician to care for the young man. Later he was taken to West's Hospital at Monett, where he died in a short time. The remains were interred in New Church or Mt. Pleasant cemetery, northwest of Butterfield, Monday, at 1:00 pm. Eston Morris who was with Burchett, was slightly injured. Thomas Burchett was 22 years of age and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Burchett of Purdy who survive their son, and two brothers, Earl of Monett and another brother Frank of Oklahoma, and two sisters, Mrs. Chas. and Mrs. Ernest Hankins of near Purdy. We understand that Mr. Schad was arrested Monday evening on a warrant issued by Squire Carter of Purdy, charging second degree murder and he gave bond for his appearance. - Cassville Democrat, Saturday, August 8, 1925 - Purdy: A very sad accident occurred on the highway, just south of Purdy Sunday evening, about five o'clock, when Schad, driving an automobile, ran into Carl Burchett, who was walking on the highway, striking him in a manner that knocked him down dragging him some distance, wounding him so seriously that he passed away at 10:30, Sunday night.
