Daniel Merritt Nickle was a son of Henry R. Wilson Nickle and Esther Brown.

Esther was a daughter of Joseph Brown and Rachel Ann Carrier. Henry R. Wilson Nickle was probably born in Cumberland County, PA. and Esther was born in New York State. They were Presbyterians. They were probably buried in Horner Cemetery in unmarked graves.

Henry R. Wilson Nickle was a son of William Nickle and Hannah Auld. They were married in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. William was born on 23 October 1767 and Hannah was born 18 March 1774. Their first three children born in the States were born in Maryland. They moved into Pennsylvania, finally settling in Venango County, where William Nickle, Jr. founded the hamlet of Nickleville.

Hannah's father, James Auld, is buried in the South Buffalo or Brownlee Cemetery, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The only James Auld buried there is listed as a Revolutionary War soldier. Hannah's brother, David Auld, is also buried in the South Buffalo Cemetery and is a soldier of the War of 1812.
