MORGAN, Lucinda (ROSE) (HALL) | Abt. 1843 | Nov. 3, 1875 | Inscription: "Beloved Wife of Dr. J. V. Morgan" - Research Note: Died at age 31. Dr. J. V. Morgan AKA Joshua Gabriel Morgan, 1838-1911, buried in Hickman Cemetery under another alias, J. J. Morgan, next to his 5th and last wife Sarah Henson. Lucinda was the daughter of John Rose and Rhoda Nancy Strain. She first married Elbert F. Hall who was killed in the Civil War while serving in the Federal Army. The government immediately began a pension for Lucinda and her three minor children. A large number of papers concerning the children's pensions are in Barry Co., MO., in the probate packet of Elbert F. Hall. These papers give detailed accounts of the amount of money the children received, which was initially around $100 each per year, and ended at over $400 per year per child, remaining in effect until they each reached age 21. Lucinda's pension ceased when she married second Dr. Joshua G. Morgan on 1 March 1866 in Benton County, Arkansas. Joshua was the son of Dr. Samuel Morgan and Margaret Vansandt, natives of Tennessee. Upon her marriage, Joshua was named guardian and curator of the minor heirs of Elbert F. Hall. In 1884, the two boys appeared in court and charged Joshua Morgan with failing to settle the accounts as guardian and curator of their father's estate. Joshua made a final payment in 1886, and the accounts were closed. Lucinda's tombstone reportedly says that she died 3 Nov 1875, however, Joshua Morgan married his next wife 14 Feb. 1875, so one of the dates must be in error. Lucinda was the second of Joshua's five wives, the first four reputedly being buried side by side with matching tombstones. Joshua Morgan used a variety of aliases including Joshua V. Morgan, J. J. Morgan, John Morgan, and Joseph Morgan. He became relatively wealthy. The names of his five wives and the dates of their deaths are documented in his pension application for service in the Civil War. - 1870 United States Federal Census, Missouri, McDonald, Fox - Joshua Morgan, age 30, farmer, real estate value $800, personal $400, born TN; Lucinda, age 25, keeping house, born MO; Sarah, age 11, born MO; John P., age 8, born MO; (Sarah and John P. listed as Morgan); Joshua, age 10, born MO (must be Samuel); Albert, age 5, born MO; Oscar G., age 3, born MO; Wesley, age 3 months, born MO. | Rose Family History Phyllis Long News Article Doris Clyde Leak |
