Sept. 29, 2022 At Home, Oak Park, CA |
Research Note: He was the son of Rev. W.K. and Frances Weston, who both preceded him in death. He graduated from Monett High School with the class of 1945. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy in November of 1945, serving as a Seaman 1st Class and also a cook on the U.S.S Kishwaukee during WW II. The ship was a gasoline tanker responsible for refueling warships in the fleet, as well as remote Navy stations. The ship traveled throughout the Pacific, taking him to Okinawa, Japan and finally returning to San Pedro, California in 1946. In November of that year, he was honorably discharged. Upon his return to Monett, he decided that he was going to electrician school to learn a new trade. Hitch hiking his way from Monett to Chicago, he attended the Coyne Electrical School and took up residence at the local YMCA. Lawrence met the love of his life, Doris Louise Hilton, when he returned to Monett and they were married on March 16, 1951. He remained by her side until she passed in 1991. To this union was born a daughter. During their 40 years of marriage, the family moved no less than 34 times. It often meant moving at the drop of a hat. Sometimes, it was as close as moving next door; other times, it took them as far away as El Paso, Texas or New Bern, North Carolina. Upon returning to Monett, Lawrence began building homes with the Wormington brothers. Together, the four built numerous homes in and around the Monett area. His work continued until a few months before his 90th birthday. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend W.K. and Frances Weston; his wife Doris; two brothers, Lonnie Weston and Clovis Weston; and a grandson, Jason Gray. | Buchanan Funeral Home Phyllis Long |
