Taylor Who Died on Eve of Retirement as Frisco Conductor. - Monett, Mo., Oct. 21, Funeral services for W. S. (Winn) Taylor, railroader of 61 years who died in a Wichita hotel on the eve of his retirement, were held at 10 o'clock this morning in the Monett Episcopal church. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Mr. Taylor, who shared the hotel room with two other railroad men who had different schedules, was to have been retired by the Frisco railroad November 1. He was a conductor on a Diesel train running between Monett, Mo., and Wichita and had been in the railroad business since 1889 when he became ticket agent for the Rock Island line at Belleville, Kan. Mr. Taylor was known in Joplin since his Frisco run carried him through that city for many years. He had been eligible for retirement 13 years and recently had completed plans to quit railroading and "whittle". He planned to make his home in Monett with a daughter. Another daughter lives in Kansas City and a son lives in Springfield, Mo. His wife died four years ago. Mr. Taylor recently was named the "oldest in service" of the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors. Mr. Taylor recalled recently that his railroading misfortunes were of a minor nature. His most exciting time, he said, was four years ago in Joplin when he got a woman off his train just two minutes before her baby was born in a taxicab. | IOOF Log Book Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |
