His/her name was Mary Jane Hoover/John J. Hoover/Garrett Hoover, born 1857 and died 1902. These notes were added at findagrave.com by Dwight Needens: Mary Jane was born a hemaphrodite. Sometime after the 1880 census was taken, Mary Jane left Dade County, left the name "Mary Jane" behind, and moved to Lamar County, Texas, to live as a man. In Newton County, Missouri, he was married using the name "John J. Hoover". The record showed that he was, at that time, a resident of Lamar County, Texas, as was his bride, "Maggie Rowin". The former Margaret A. Jackson, who had hailed from Laclede County, Missouri, or at least lived there when the 1860 census was taken, had been married to Garrett's first cousin, Samuel Peter Rowin. Samuel and Maggie apparently had divorced--or separated--as he (Samuel) was living at the time Garrett and Maggie were married. Garrett and Maggie were living in Monett, Missouri when he (Garrett) came down with pneumonia, in December of 1901. When he became deathly ill, he was taken to his father's home, in Dade County, where he died on Thursday the 16th of January, and was buried in the Hampton Cemetery. His grave is marked only by a field stone, seems I remember it as being dark brown---anyway, it is next to his parents' burial site. | Death Certificate IOOF Log Book Photo Donna Cooper IOOF Log Book Note Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |

ROYALTY, Alnie W. | Feb. 10, 1888 IL |
July 14, 1916 Carthage, Jasper Co., MO |
Research Note: He death certificate states that C. W. Royalty, born IN, was his father. His mother's name was listed as Lizzie M. Walter, born IL. He was killed in a railroad accident. He was married and an engineer for Frisco. His name is spelled Almie on the death certificate and Alnie on the stone. - CARTHAGE EVENING PRESS, JULY 15, 1916 - Cause of the Wreck: Engineer Royalty, headed east, was attempting to make a switch by backing to the west end of the switch yards. In doing so, he was on the main track, encroaching on the time of the approaching passenger train from the west, which had a right to expect an unobstructed track. Royalty failed to make the switch in time. As he approached the end of the switch, the engine of the passenger train came suddenly around the corner of the big limestone bluff near the track at this point. The two trains were at this time little over 100 yards apart. The freight train consisted only of the engine and caboose. In the crash that followed, this caboose was smashed into small splinters between the two engines. The body of the freight engine tender was torn from it's tracks. The passenger engine turned over, but the freight engine remained on the track. It is said Engineer Royalty watered his engine just before the accident. While he was so doing his conductor was in the station getting orders to move his train after the passenger train had passed. Royalty left the water tank and pulled west past the depot. As he did so, the telegrapher glanced at the clock and noticed that the passenger was almost due. He signaled to the engineer that the passenger was "O.T.," on time, so that the engineer could take precautions. The engineer nodded that he understood. Evidently he thought he could make the switch -- and failed. He could have easily gone onto a switch in the east part of the yards, if he had known that he could not make the switch at the west end, and in doing so would have had an abundance of time. Was Married in Carthage: A. W. Royalty, the dead engineer was 28 years old. He was born at Brownfield, Polk county, Illinois and came to Missouri with his parents as a boy. He first began work as a call boy in the round house at Sedalia and gradually worked up to the position of engineer. He was in the employ of the Frisco Railroad company for the past 11 years, and had been and engineer nine of those years. He removed to Monett to Joplin last January and resided at 808 West Twelfth street in that city. He was married six or seven years ago to Miss Theresa Rice, who resided near Monett. They came to Carthage to be married. The deceased is survived by his wife and a five year old son; also by his father, C. W. Royalty, of Monett and a sister, Mrs. Charles Curry of Belmond, Iowa. The remains were prepared here for interment, and will be taken to Monett tomorrow afternoon, where the funeral will be held and burial made. - August 11, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Marriage License: W.
