PIERCE, Samuel Wesley | Jan. 1840 Campton, Grafton Co, NH |
Nov. 28, 1906 Barry Co., MO |
SSW: Lorinda H. - Research Note: Callaway Funeral Home records state that W. S. (Samuel W.) died on Nov. 28, 1906. He was retired and age 66 years, 20 months, 6 days old when he died. The cause of death was heart trouble. His birth date wasn't given nor were the names of his parents. The cemetery log book lists that he was a veteran. - Samuel W. Pierce, age 21, born Campton, Grafton, NH, son of Nathan and Permelia Pierce, married Lorinda H. Young, age 19, born Canaan, Somerset, ME, daughter of John and Martha Ann Young, on Nov. 16, 1861 in Manchester, Hillsborough, NH. - August 15, 1903, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - The case of State vs. S. W. Pierce of Monett, charged with selling liquors Sunday, in three cases was tried recently before Squire Lauderdale at Exeter. There was an acquittal in two cases and one conviction. An appeal was taken in this case. - Lee Hedges Notes: He was one of the volunteers for the 1st New Hampshire Regiment, Company C that fought in the Civil War against the Confederate Army for three months in 1861. After his service Samuel met and married his first wife Lorinda Hathren Young in New Hampshire on November 1861 after his short service in the war. They moved to Ascot, Sherbrooke Co, Quebec, Canada where they had a son born and died in 1863 (Walter Wesley Pierce d. March 16, 1863). Their daughter Ella Pamelia was born in 1868 in the same town. Samuel brought Ella to the Dakota Territory around 1883 to settle homestead land which they lived on for several years. After Ella met and married Norman Allen Sturgis while home steading in the Dakota Territory, they moved to Monett, MO and Samuel owned a hotel (Friscoe Hotel) in town and also owned a bar in Pierce City MO. Lorinda died in 1904 in Monett, MO and is buried with Samuel in the Monett Cemetery. Samuel later married Della Webb. He died in 1906 in Monett, MO and was buried in a large site with Lorinda. In his will, he left almost everything to his grandchildren (they had not been born yet, that made the will breakable). Della Webb was encouraged by lawyers to take everything, but she declined as Samuel had left her with money. This is the will that grandchildren Arthur, Cora and Mamie Sturgis shared, dividing the proceeds between the three families. Most of this inheritance came from the lands and inheritance that Hollis Hitchcock left Samuel in 1896. 1906 court probate papers show Mrs. Ella Sturgis was living in Tulsa, OK with Norman and Samuel Pierce had been living in Rolla MO. Ella would eventually die in 1914 during a visit to their daughter Cora in Chicago IL. By 1920 Norman was married to Lenia Smith as his second wife and living with her 14 year old son Lonard in Rolla MO. By 1930 he would move in with his daughter Cora until his death in 1931. | Callaway Funeral Home Donna Cooper IOOF Log Book Online Newspapers NH Marriage Records Note Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |
