Apr. 1, 1928 | Inscription: "Father" - Research Note: Son of Joseph Licurgus "Curg" Lane and Harriet Leanna Blankenship. His wife was Ella Zena Marrs. Note at findagrave.com: Joseph L. Lane was named after his father, who died a couple of months before the boy's birth in a log cabin in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. The family had moved there just months before, from a farm in Tennessee. Joseph's father was a Civil War veteran with a musket ball lodged in one lung. He grew up with his mother Hattie and his grandmother Rebecca Applewhite Blankenship. Hattie worked as a midwife. She later bore another son, to a man reported to be a Native American, Harvey Moon. Rebecca chased Harvey off shortly before her second grandchild was born, because apparently Harvey was abusive toward Joseph. The two boys, Joseph and William Harvey, grew up, one fair-skinned and the other dark. The family was very poor and Joseph was unable to get much schooling. He had to help on neighboring farms to bring in a little income. He married a local girl, Ella Zena Marrs, and their first child, Ruby, was born in the same cabin he grew up in. Later he and his young family moved to Missouri, where he worked for the railroad. He and his wife added two sons to the family there. - Lane Plot Stone - Another Photo of Plot Stone - Another Photo | Census Note Phyllis Long Photos Donna Cooper Photos Jay Trace |
