HOBBS, Russell L. | Feb. 23, 1895 St. Louis, MO |
Oct. 5, 1918 KIA in France |
Research Note: Son of James Lemuel Hobbs and Ida Mae Rittenhouse. He is also listed on the WW I page of this web site. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Nov. 28, 1918 - Russell Hobbs Killed in Action: J. L. Hobbs received a telegram Thursday night from Washington, giving the news that his son, Russell L. Hobbs, was killed in action October 5. A short time ago Mr. Hobbs received a package containing the personal belongings of his son, but no message accompanied it. He immediately sent messages to learn what he could of Russell, and receive a reply that no mishap of any kind had been reported. He felt encouraged and thought that Russell might have been made a prisoner or have been sent some distance from headquarters. The package was mailed Oct. 12. Mr. Hobbs the first of this week received the September and October allotments from the young man and believe he must be safe until he received the death message on Thursday. Russell Hobbs was born in St. Louis, February 23, 1895. He lived at Monett with his parents for a number of years and received his schooling in Monett public schools where he was a universal favorite. He was a member of the Methodist church. Russell Hobbs was one of Monett's finest young men. When war was declared he was one of the first to enlist. He was a member of Battery A. 5th field Artillery, First Field Artillery Brigade. He held the position of gas sentry and was in some of the fieriest battles of the war. He had the honor of being the first volunteer from Barry County and received his training at Jefferson Barracks and Fort Bliss. Monett grieves with the family in the death of this noble young hero. Monett Times - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Dec. 26, 1918 - Tells of Russell Hobbs' Death: A letter recently received from Warren Hoover, gave the details of the death of Russell Hobbs. His letter follows: France, Nov. 21, 1918 - I am on the Fritz, but not bad. Have been in the hospital for about two weeks. Today was the first time I had on my clothes. As the song goes, "I won't get well, because I am in love with a nurse." No, I hardly think that is it. Makes the fourth time since I have been in France to get hit, but this time was not bad and was done within three hours of the time the armistice was signed. What do you think of our ending the war this year?, when in July it seemed hopeless? I think everyone of the boys who are left are glad, but I sure hate to see so many mother's boys under the sod of France. Russell Hobbs is among those who went. Here is the straight of his death. On October 5, Russell was killed in action near Flieville, France. On the night of October 4, the Huns shelled the B__ position and gasses also. Hobbs was badly burned. On October 5, near noon, he started for the field hospital after being tagged. The ambulance being a little distance off, he came back to this Battery for dinner. While lined up for dinner a shell, 77, fell in the midst, killing Hobbs instantly. He volunteered in the early part of 1917 for service in the American heavy artillery and was missed by all the friends in his regiment. Boys and officers of his Battery told me that Russell was a fine soldier and always did his duty. I was with him several times since being in France. He sure was well liked. Private Warren P.
