SSW: Dora - Research Note: He was a retired school teacher and merchant. Son of Mark Gentry and Elizabeth Jane Loveall. His wife was Dora Hadley and she was the informant on the death certificate. Residence was Springfield, Greene Co., MO. - MO Pioneer History - "M. L. GENTRY FAMILY" Martin Luther (nicknamed Boomer) Gentry was born on a farm about six miles south of the east side of Pierce City, Dec. 11, 1872, when that town was nothing but a small village, the Frisco Railroad having reached there in 1870. The house on the farm was a one and a half story hewn log house. It must have been built as early as 1830. Uncle Millard Terry told Mr. Gentry that he (Mr. Terry) played with Mr. Gentry's half brothers, the Birkes brothers, around this house during the Civil War and that it was an old house then. It is still standing at this date (1961) and very sound. The house belongs to Arthur Meister and is located four and one-half miles northwest of Purdy and about a mile and a fourth northwest of the Stone Prairie Lutheran Church. Mr. Gentry remembers his mother and her first husband, Elias Birkes, bought the place from Pinkney Haddock in 1854 or 1855. All six Birkes children and the five Gentry children were reared in this old log house. The Gentry children were in order of ages: Alice (Mrs. Louie McNally); Boudnot, named for a Cherokee Indian Chief; M. L. Gentry (our subject); the last two children were twins, Manford E. who married Georgia Ferguson, who lives in Butterfield; Mrytle (Mrs. Pinkney Henderson). Marion Luther Gentry quotes, "I am the last leaf hanging to the tree". Mr. Gentry's mother's name was Elizabeth Jane Loveall, the 7th child of Abraham and Lucinda Walker Loveall. They came with their children out of Kentucky around up the White River on a tiny boat to Forsythe, Mo., in 1834 when Lucinda Jane was two years old. In 1846 at the age of 14 she married Elias Birkes, age 17. He is buried a short distance from the old log house, that was their home. Mrs. Birkes after the death of her first husband, Elias Birkes, who was killed at the battle of Gadfly (now Corsicana) as he fought on the Union side of the Civil War, married Mark Gentry (our subject's father). In 1896, Mr. Gentry came from Kentucky and settled near Warsaw, Mo. He joined the Union side and fought in the Civil War and during the war his wife died leaving four children. After the war ended Mr. and Mrs. Gentry reared their large family of ten in the above mentioned old hewn log one and a half story house. According to Mr. Martin Luther Gentry's study of the Gentry family, they were a prominent English family and the King of England sent a body of soldiers over to Virginia to put down Bacon's Rebellion in Colonial days. Among these soldiers were two young Gentry brothers who settled permanently in Virginia, and history teaches, that all Gentrys in the United States are descendants of these two brothers. Martin Luther Gentry and Miss Dora Hadley were married in Cassville in Jan. 1907. Dora Hadley Gentry was born and reared about five miles northwest of Cassville. She is the daughter of Sidney and Sarah (Ferguson) Hadley. Both the Hadley and Ferguson families came to Missouri from Kentucky, and were originally from England. Mrs. Gentry's grandfather's were merchants. Her grandfather, Henry Hadley, was a brother of Ex-Governor of Missouri's father. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Gentry are parents of one child, a daughter, Eldora (Mrs. Tommy Young) of Monett, MO. Mr. and Mrs. Young are parents of one son, Jim Young, of the home. Mr. and Mrs. Gentry make their home at this writing (1961) in Springfield, Mo. Another Photo | History Death Certificate Phyllis Long Photos Jay Trace |
