ARMSTRONG, Margaret R. | June 10, 1928 Monett, Barry Co., MO |
May 20, 2013 Lacoba Homes, Monett, Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: She was the daughter of Ruth (Cole) Armstrong and Ralph Armstrong. Tragically, she suffered a severe injury during birth that left her spinal cord so severely damaged she was unable to perform normal functions such as speaking clearly, walking or feeding herself. As a result, she ended up having to be home schooled by a private teacher and family members, including her grandparents, Augustus and Gertrude Cole, who she and her Mother lived with for a period of time. Marg lived outside Monett only once, in about 1947, when her Mother, Ruth, took her to Houston, TX, to a school where they hoped to fit her with braces and teach her how to walk. Marg was so excited, she used to say, "I will be on my own!" Sadly, she returned home to Monett with her new braces but she could only take a few steps before falling. Marg's mother married Alfred "Fred" Long during World War II, and bought a home on West County. They made trips to Eureka Springs and Fayetteville, as well as Table Rock Lake where Ruth and Fred had bought a home and Marg learned to fish. Despite her handicap, Marg never complained. In about 1978, Marg's mother arranged to have her transitioned into Lacoba Homes in Monett because she was getting to old to take care of her. The timing was good because Ruth passed away two years later. Fred had passed some years earlier. In the 35 years she lived there - a record at Lacoba -, Marg endeared herself to many residents and staff. | Buchanan Funeral Home Phyllis Long |
