Warren Co., TN
1864 Research Note: Son of Thomas and Mary Mitchell. Rev. Joel Franklin Mitchell and his wife Roseanna (Simpson) Mitchell came to Seligman from Warren County, Tennessee, where they were both born, in 1830 in a covered wagon. He was born in 1795 to Thomas and Mary Mitchell. She was born in 1816. They built a two-room log cabin two miles north of Seligman. Joel and his oldest son William were killed by bushwhackers in 1864 just south of the barn on the farm. Rose died on November 17, 1898 in Seligman at the age of 82. The other burial is that of Joel and Rose's grandson, John, son of Richard and Jane (Mitchell) Pallet. Also buried at this cemetery is the infant daughter of Joel and Rose Mitchell, Adeline. Her name is not on the stone. - "Persons Holding Slaves in 1861" - Joel F. Mitchell. - April 13, 1907, Cassville Democrat - Military History of Barry County: Joel F. Mitchell, a Baptist minister of Roller's Ridge, was killed at or near Washburn, by soldiers. He had come into Washburn and surrendered. - Notes of Louise Stafford Bates, a descendant: My aunts and uncles have talked about the Mitchell's from Missouri as long as I can remember. They knew their grandmother Mitchell. Joel Franklin and Roseanna (Simpson) Mitchell left Warren Co. TN in 1830 in a covered wagon. They moved their family to the farm two miles north of Seligman, Barry Co, MO where Joel and Rose built a two room log cabin. This was to be their home. Thomas and Mary Mitchell, Joel's parents, and Adeline Mitchell, Joel and Rose's daughter, are buried on the north boundary line of the northwest quarter of section 15 in Barry County. Joel, an ordained Southern Baptist minister was instrumental in starting several Baptist churches in southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas. From 1858 until his death, Joel served as Justice of the Peace for Sugar Creek township. In 1864, Joel Mitchell and his son, William F. Mitchell (William J. in the census), were bushwhacked by carpetbaggers just south of the barn on the Mitchell farm. The tragedy occurred so near the farm house that the women heard the shots. When Joe Mitchell, Joel's son, returned home from the Civil War and learned of the deaths of his father and brother, he saddled a horse and left to find the men responsible for the murders. Joe was killed in Texas by some of the same men who murdered his father and brother. - Goodspeed's History: Joel F. Mitchell, an old Baptist preacher of Roller's Ridge, near Keetsville (Washburn), at one time a slave owner, but during the war accused of sundry illegal and unchristian acts, came into Washburn and surrendered. The mob and soldiers showed him no mercy, and so he fell dead. Online Newspapers
