His remains to be returned to the place he grew up, at the McGuire Cemetery. - Obit by Ann Day: In the early hours of July 1, 2010, the Allen Clan of the Ozarks lost one of its patriarchs with the passing of George Leon Allen. Born in Thayer, KS on Feb 19, 1922, he was the son of Arthur Allen and Nancie Anne Collins and the grandson of Blake Allen. All being long term residents of the Shell Knob area on the Kings River bend. His childhood was spent on the family farm, and going to school at the "Old McGuire School", all on the same road. When WW II began he was a teenager, but signed up in the hopes of seeing more of the world. The army agreed with him as he put on 20 lbs. of muscle and obtained a place in the 96th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop. They were called the "Deadeye Division" due to the fact their commander required every man qualify as a sharpshooter or better. Not a problem for George as he ranked number 2 among the shooters in the Pacific Theater. Most of his time was spent with the troops protecting the Headquarters and the staff on the island of Leyte. Called the "Ghost Soldiers of the Ryukus", their abilities in Recon and the setting Ambushes combined with War Dogs kept the casualty rate one of the lowest. At the end of the war George found himself without a scratch, and decorated by both the US and Philippine governments. After the war he followed the economic boom and moved to Ark City, and finally to Wichita, KS. There he went to work for the Sherwoods/Wildcat Construction Company. His 40+ years spent as their primary crane operator. Over the years he was involved in the building of numerous highways, bridges, and buildings in and around the Wichita area, Oklahoma and Texas. Two good examples being the 21st Bridge at the Spillway, where he worked seven days a week for two years, and in 1975 the Bank IV Building on Douglas St. where the Alexander Calder sculpture was exhibited. Almost everywhere you look around Wichita you will find projects he worked on. He survived two wives, Ola Ibanez Walling and Darlyeen Penquite. He is survived by brothers Emmett Allen of Cassville, Kenneth Allen from Golden, and a sister Lois Buckley of Douglas, KS. One child, a son Billy D. Allen, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. No services are scheduled at this time. Cremation arrangements were under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. His remains to be returned to the place he grew up, at the McGuire Cemetery. | Fohn Funeral Home Online Obit Phyllis Long Obit Ann Day Photo Jay Trace |
