HAILEY, Allen Franklin | Aug. 1, 1850 White Co., TX |
Mar. 21, 1940 MO |
SSW: Mollie Lucinda - Research Note: Photo of stone at findagrave.com. - Allen Franklin Hailey, Cato farmer, passed away last Thursday following an illness which confined him for the past five years. The death of Mr. Hailey probably set a record for the long life of a big family. His death at 89 marked the first ever to occur in his family which includes eleven children. He was born in White County, Texas, August 1, 1850 and when Allen was five years old the family moved to Berryville, Arkansas, where his father built the first hotel having purchased the property of James Berry. Mr. Hailey was exceptionally active as a farmer and stockman widely known throughout the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks as "Uncle Allen Hailey". Famed for his charitable disposition which extended to all with whom he came in contact, was matched only by that of his wife, "Aunt Mollie". At their home no wayfarer or friend who happened along was ever turned away. If visitors came in the dead of night, Mr. and Mrs. Hailey would arise and insist that a meal be prepared. The son of a confederate veteran, Captain Benjamin Franklin Hailey and his wife the former Harriett Ophelia Gates, both natives of Tennessee, he adhered strictly to the principles of the democratic party in politics. His advice if adhered to by a candidate usually was such that it made a winner of the office seeker. This advise on political strategy won him friends even among those who opposed him. During the war, he recalled that he lived on wheat bran and water for more than three weeks, which his mother baked in bread and cakes and that "I was mighty glad to get it". When he was 17 years old, he fell in love with Mollie Aaron, she was only 13 years old, and they were married. They lived at Berryville until 53 years ago when they first came to Cassville and later moved to the home they built near Cato. The family has lived there continuously since then and they reared eleven children all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Claude Wiley of Cassville, Mrs. Porter Suttles of Jenkins, Mrs. Olen Stumpff of Cato, Mrs. Cleve Blythe of Scholten, Mrs. Clarence Rill of Marionville, George Hailey of Springfield, Olen Hailey of Eltopia, WA, Ben Hailey of Mesa, WA, Mrs. Manton Poe of Mesa, WA, Mrs. Minor Burress of Wheeler, WA and Mrs. George Nance of Neppel, WA. The family was closely knit and while widely separated, the children were constant visitors at the home of their parents. Last August the entire family gathered together for two days and two nights. It was one of the most glorious reunions ever held in Barry County. About seven years ago, Mr. Hailey had logs hewn on his farm of fine walnut trees. The logs were sawed into lumber and under his direction, a beautiful walnut casket was made which he ordained should be used for his funeral. The body of Uncle Allen remained in his home until the funeral hour. Besides the members of his immediate family, he is survived by a brother Jeff Hailey of Berryville, Arkansas, thirty-one grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren. | Obit Phyllis Long |

Hancock, of Galena, Stone County, RR 1, passed away at his home, New Year's day, at the age of 74 years, after an illness of two years. Deceased was born in Kentucky and has resided in southwest Missouri for the past fifty years. He was a minister in the Christian Church and was considered an authority on its doctrine, having written a number of books on the subject, also making several lecture tours of the United Stated in the interest of his church. His life among his neighbors has always been above reproach, and the esteem in which he has held by them was reflected in the large crowd which attended his funeral at Mars Hill, Friday, Jan. 2. Rev. Harlan of the Christian Church have conducted the funeral and paid a glowing tribute to his departed brother in his noble work. Crane Chronicle Rev. Hancock was the father of Will Hancock at Washburn. He was well known to many of the old settlers of this county. - February 15, 1908, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Rev. G. B.
