Martin Lawrence was born June 21, 1840 near Terre Haute, IN, and was a son of Samuel and Ruth (Finley) Lawrence and the youngest of twelve children. He grew to manhood at his parent's home in IN and during the Civil War enlisted with Co. E, 97th Reg. IN Inf. and served for three years under General W. T. Sherman. After being discharged from the army he returned home and on Mar. 21, 1867 he was united in marriage to Clarissa Neldon and to this union eight children were born who with the aged companion survive. They are J. M., S. W., and Willis Lawrence of Washburn, Mrs. J. R. Evert, of Fairview, Mrs. J. E. Lamb of Cassville, Mrs. R. F. Hatcher and Mrs. P. P. Doyle of Exeter and Mrs. W. H. Relethford of Garfield, AR. Besides his wife and eight children, he is.... (blacked out portion).... the house Apr. 12, conducted by Rev. C. E. Henderson of Purdy after which the body was convoyed to the Maplewood cemetery in Exeter for interment. His grandsons, Loren Lawrence, Emery Evert, Wayne Lawrence, Ralph and Lawrence Lamb and Ethel Lawrence were pall bearers and his granddaughters, Winnie, Elise, and Ester Lawrence, Mrs. Leah Myers were flower girls. About 47 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence with his family moved to MO locating in McDonald Co., and about 1888 they moved to Washburn, which has since been their home and he had been considered one of the county's substantial citizens. - Cassville Democrat, Sept. 11, 1920 - Washburn: The Washburn Produce Co., has paid Willis Lawrence $750 of tomatoes from a 4 acre field.
