FORD, John Marcus "Mark" | Oct. 13, 1873 Rocky Comfort, McDonald Co., MO |
Mar. 29, 1950 | Research Note: Son of Thomas Frederick Ford and Elizabeth Jane Barr, buried in the same plot with Thomas F. Ford and family. - August 31, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Fugitive Eight Years, Caught, J. M. (Mark) Ford Arrested in West on Forgery Charge and Brought to Cassville, Had Changed Name - J. M. (Mark) Ford, against whom a Grand Jury indictment was found in this county at the fall term of circuit court 1908 upon a charge of forgery, was placed under arrest at North Yakima, Wash., Aug. 22 and landed in the county jail at Cassville Monday evening, Aug. 28. The arrest was made by a detective of the Burn's agency. During the year 1908 Ford was in business at Jenkins. He was operating the Jenkins Mill. A short time before that date he had been in business at Mineral Spring. His store there burned and he moved to Jenkins. While at Jenkins he became indebted to the First National Bank of Cassville for quite a little sum. The bank foreclosed on his property to settle the account. Ford, sometime during the early fall of 1908, while living at Jenkins, forged the names of George Swindle, a brother-in-law, and Mollie Swindle, a sister, to a note and cashed the note for $2,000 at the Monett State Bank. It was for this crime that the Grand Jury indictment was returned against him. He forged another note of $2,000 with the same names on it and cashed it at a bank at Aurora and is wanted in Lawrence county for that crime. Ford makes a plain confession of the facts of the case and says that he went first to Springfield when he left the county. Later going west where he settled upon a ranch near North Yakima, Wash. Since leaving this county in 1908 he had gone under the assumed name of C. C. Hardcastle. His two children who are young, have never known their true names. Detectives have been working on the case and succeeded in locating Ford by a clue obtained from a letter received by Mrs. Ford's parents in Oklahoma from one of the little granddaughters. During M. E. Newman's term of office as sheriff, it was thought that Ford had been located at Rocky Ford, Colo. Newman made the trip to Rocky Ford and investigated the matter. He found a Mark Ford living there but he proved not to be the man wanted. He was placed under arrest by a detective Tuesday of last week and finally admitted to the detective that he was the man wanted. He was brought to Monett Monday where he was met by Sheriff Brixey and brought over to Cassville and placed in jail. "I wish now that I had gone on and served my term while I was in the county eight years ago, for I have lived in constant fear that every day an officer would get me", Ford stated Monday evening to Sheriff Brixey. The amount of money obtained by Ford from the two forged notes, $4,000, and the interest for 8 years and the costs and expense would amount to about $8,000. Ford lived as a young man about Rocky Comfort and at one time was in business at Exeter. - June 30, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Ford Discharged, Re-Arrested and Held on Similar Charge in Lawrence County: The case of State vs. Mark Ford, charged with forging a note and obtaining money on same from a bank at Monett, was dismissed in circuit court Thursday, because the warrant charged that Ford had forged the names to the note and the prosecution was unable to prove that he had forged the names signed to the note. We understand the defendant would have been able to have proved that the signatures were not of his writing and not being allowed to amend the charges, there was nothing to do but dismiss the case. Sheriff Houston held Ford for the Lawrence County officials who will take him to Mt. Vernon, where a similar charge has been preferred by a bank at Aurora. Deputy Constable Ed Taylor of Aurora, motored to this city Thursday and arrested Ford and took him to Mt. Vernon. - July 7, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Ford Gives Bond - Mark Ford who was arrested here on his release last week on a charge of forgery, was released on bond at Aurora, June 29.
