He was a farmer and a stock raiser of Barry County, MO was born in Greene Co., IN, in 1820, and is the second child of Hiram and Anna (Lakey) Long. After the Bushwhackers murdered of his father and brother, Simeon H. Long enlisted in the Federal army, joining the Eighth Missouri Cavalry, with which he served three years, being mustered out of service at Little Rock, Ark., on July 20, 1865. He was paid off at St. Louis the following August.

On September 25, 1842, he was united in marriage with Tabitha James, who was born in Indiana on March 15, 1826. His oldest son, S. J. Long, served in the Civil War in the same company with his father. He died in the hospital at Bloomfield, Stoddard County, MO, from sickness contracted while in the service.

After the war Mr. Long returned to the remainder of his family, whom he had left for security at Springfield, MO, and in February, 1866, came to Barry County, where he has since been engaged in farming.
