Published reference: Goodspeed's History of Barry County, p. 75. John S. Lee was not a soldier, rather a southern sympathizer, killed by a Lt. Gibson. The family buried him and through the generations have kept the stars and bars perpetually flying over his grave. It was still there in 2004 when I last visited the site. On page 75 of the reprint of Goodspeed's History of Barry Co., MO, 1888: "John S. Lee was killed by Lt. Gibson, three miles south of Cassville, at his home."

On page 76 and 77 of the Goodspeed History: "John S. Lee was killed at his home by the Federals, shortly after the Pea Ridge affair. He DID NOT belong to either army, but was one of the men who hid in the bush during the troubles."
