She married James Bowie Springer (1860-1942) on Sept. 21, 1887 in Aurora, Lawrence Co., MO. James Bowie Springer was the son of the Rev. James Dobbins Springer and Tersa Ann Inman. The Rev. James D. Springer was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister in Lawrence and Stone counties from his ordination in 1877 until his death in 1906. James Bowie Springer and Sarah Belle Boswell were parents of one daughter, Lucille Lodema Springer (1892-1988). She was reared by her grandparents, John and Lodema Boswell. (See US Census 1900 and 1910, Barry Co, MO). She married William John Thomas on Feb. 14, 1914 in Barry Co., MO. After Belle's death James Bowie Springer married Minnie M. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Cleat Stumpff; a daughter, Mrs. Alice White, Concord, Calif.; two brothers, Bill Stumpff, Jenkins, and Burl Stumpff, Silverton, Ore.; two sisters, Mrs. Clema Cope, Cassville, and Mrs. Clara Elliott, Bakersfield; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williamson Chapel in the Valley. Ron Stough officiated. Research Note: According to King Funeral Home records she was listed as "Mrs." on record, and also listed as a widow. Her death certificate that she was a widow and a daughter of Thomas McKinney. (Her mother was Sarah Legg). E. M. Hilton of Jenkins, MO, gave the information. The death certificate gives her birth date as Aug. 4, 1832. - Elizabeth McKinney married Thomas Calvin Suttles on Jan. 19, 1854 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, Feb. 22, 1917 - Mrs. Elizabeth (McKinney) Suttles, wife of the late Thomas C. Suttles, died at her old home near Leann, Mo., Feb. 16, 1917, age 85 years, 6 months and 16 days. She was born Aug. 4, 1832 in Limestone County, Alabama. She had been an invalid for several years. She married Thomas Suttles in 1850. To this union ten children were born, of whom six survive, who are, Mrs. Mary Hilton and Leroy Suttles of Jenkins, Edward Suttles of Aurora, John Suttles of Near Golden and Martin Suttles of Fairview. All the children were at the funeral. She also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. N. L. Hailey of this city, Mrs. Celia Vance of Richland, N. Mex., E. ?. McKinney of Hailey and T. C. McKinney of Shawnee, Okla., as well as a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her departure. She became a member of the Methodist Church at an early age and lived a good Christian life. She was very quite and devoted most of her life to her home and family. Funeral service were held at Leann Conducted by Rev. McKinzie of Aurora. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, doing puzzles and playing videos games with his nephews. James did not have kids of his own but considered his many nephews and nieces as his own. He had a smile for everyone and was always determined to beat challenges thrown at him by doctors even from a young age. He was expected to be in a wheelchair by age 12, however after years of wearing leg braces, he was able to kick them off and even learned to ride a bicycle. Many have seen James riding his bike or walking the roads of Aurora. James is survived by his sister; two brothers; his mother and stepfather; his stepmother; thirteen nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; one stepsister and one stepbrother. Death certificate says he died in Jenkins, MO. - Information taken from "Early Barry County", published by the Barry County Historical Society - John Solomon Thomas was deputy assessor of Barry County in 1880, and the story goes, when he finished assessing he turned in his assessor book at Cassville, bought his marriage license and rode on horseback to the Carney home on Little Flat Creek, took his bride, Leann Carney on the horse behind him, rode to the Justice of Peace where they were married. After the marriage they rode on to John Solomon's fathers' home. The marriage took place Dec. 9, 1880. They soon moved into a one-room log house on a 40 acre farm. He bought an adjoining 40 acre tract of land, and when the older children were small, he built a three-room house and the post office was located in the living room, it was called Marmuduke Post Office. Later the Government decided to change the name to Leann for Mrs. Thomas who was assistant postmaster. ALBERT THOMAS PASSES ON SUNDAY - Leaves Husband and Splendid Daughters To Mourn Her Passing - Mrs. Albert Thomas, another splendid Jenkins citizen, died at her home last Sunday morning of influenza and pneumonia. She had only been sick a few days but was stricken severely at the out-break. She was a daughter of Wm. Wiley, an old time and highly respected citizen of Scholten, and was born and reared in that section of the county. Several years ago she married to Albert Thomas who, with five splendid daughters, survive. She was said to be between 40 and 45 years old and also leaves two brothers, Claud and Lloyd Wiley, prominent farmers resident in the northeast part of this county. Funeral services were conducted at the family home Tuesday afternoon, which the remains were interred in the cemetery at Osa, near her home. Mrs. Thomas was an excellent lady and loved by all who knew her. Thomas, Mrs. Jane Hilton, and Mrs. Ben Parvin of Crane, Mo., Mrs. Malissa Biggs, Oklahoma, J. H. Thomas, Tar River, Okla., who came to see his father and stayed and helped care for him a week; Wm. R. Thomas, Leann, Mo., Mrs. Laney McKinzie of Madry, Mo. William F. Thomas was well known, having lived in the neighborhood of Leann since 1852. He served three years in the Civil War. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church, and a good citizen, and often said he wanted to die without an enemy which we think he did. And his life should be a pattern for others. Funeral services were conducted at Leann by Rev. Ab Bowling, where a large crowd of relatives and friends were waiting to pay their last tribute of respect. After which he was laid to rest in the Leann cemetery to await the resurrection morning. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, April 4, 1918 - J. H. She worked at Vaisey Bristol shoe factory in Aurora, MO then at Jumping Jacks in Marionville and Monett, MO eventually retiring in 1995. Kathern was a member of the Crane Bible Baptist Church, Crane MO and the VFW Auxiliary 7628, Ozark, MO.
