AKIN, James William 1805

MO
SSW: William O., Susan A. and Mary - Research Note: Row 5 - Plot 64 - Notes of R. C. Akin at findagrave.com: James William Akin was the 3rd son of 8 sons of 13 children born to James Akin and Judith Baker. While I am still researching my g-g-g grandfather, I will at least, supply the information I have found so far. I am involved in DNA Testing to help further advance my research into the Akin family lineage and to accurately establish their history. The birth date on the gravestone is incorrect. The birth date of James W. Akin is given in his parents family bible as Sept. 6, 1810, owned by the Norris Family in Kentucky, and which they have graciously given me pictures of the Bible and Family Records from within. I recently reviewed the Akin bible record and was astounded to discovered that everyone has been reading the name of James W. Akin as James Watkin Akin. Seems, a fancy "A" was used in the Akin name and it appeared at a glance to be Watkin. However, upon close examination and comparison to other entries, is "not" Watkin. It is just James W. Akin, so it finally explains why he was sometimes using the name William, because his middle name was William and the reason one of his sons was named William. Little is really known about James and alot of confusion over who his two wives actually were. However, I have uncovered and discovered some information to help piece this man's history together. James was definitely a tobacco farmer in Cumberland County, KY as evidenced by the many mortgage leans/deeds he used to acquire planting rights and finance money. In addition, it appears he occasionally was involved in land surveying in the Cumberland County area over the years from as early as the 1830's up to as late as 1866. James W. Akin had at least 5 children by his 1st wife, who may have been Ruth Norris b. abt 1822 in KY or TN and who d. abt 1848 - 1850 in Cumberland Co., KY, most likely from complications of bearing their 4th child, Nancy Ellen. It is a bit strange that both Richard F. Akin and his brother William Oscar were born in TN, when they were residing in Cumberland Co., KY during both periods of their birth, however, perhaps his 1st wife was returning to her parents home to birth the children. The Norris Family and Akin Families all lived very close to each other according to the Federal census. In addition, there were many Lawsons living in District 1 of Cumberland County, during this period of time. I believe the 2nd spouse of James W. Akin was Mary Ann Lawson b. abt 1822-1828 in Tennessee and d. abt 1888 in Barry Co., MO. A marriage record certainly points to the fact they were married on Jan. 1, 1852 in Cumberland Co., KY. It appears that after James W. Akin married Mary Ann Lawson, the family was reunited. How, When, and Why are questions regarding James W. and his 2nd spouse ending up in Barry Co., MO. after 1885. They would have been quite old to make a trip that far. Besides that, the 1870, 1880 Federal Census, and the 1885 Iowa Census indicate they were still living in Ainsworth Co., IA after leaving Cumberland Co., KY after 1866. In addition, it is supported by the fact they also had members of their family living with them at the time in Iowa. Could the answer be that Nancy Ellen Akin, their daughter, after losing her husband, John S. Robinson abt 1880-85 may have decided to move to Missouri, to be closer to more family? She would have been extremely burdened with not only rearing her children but also caring for her aging parents. That appears to me what most likely happened. Ainsworth County, IA is about 425 miles from Barry Co., MO and was a pretty straight shot, at least to Springfield, MO. It is possible passenger railroad transportation was becoming more available during this 1885-1890 period into the area. A wagon trip would have been quite a haul, but a gravestone does exist with James W. and Mary Ann Akin on it in Barry Co., MO. Cemetery Directory

MO
SSW: James W., Susan A. and William O. - Research Note: Row 5 - Plot 64A - Notes of R. C. Akin at findagrave.com: Mary Ann Lawson was the 1st born daughter of 4 daughters and 9 children of Elisha Lawson Rachel Phillips. 1850 Census indicates a birth year for Mary abt. 1822, marriage record indicates abt 1828, and her gravestone indicates abt 1825, so 1822-1828 is the range. Mary was the 2nd spouse of James William Akin. Records indicate that Mary and James William Akin were possibly married on Jan. 1, 1852 in Cumberland Co., KY, 2-3 years after James W. Akin lost his 1st wife, whose name is possibly Ruth Norris. James and Mary Ann did not have any children together, but James did have at least 4 children we know of by his first wife. James and Mary Ann Akin lived in Cumberland Co., KY until the civil war period, at which time, the Akin Families split up into different directions. James and Mary Ann Akin headed north to Iowa sometime after 1866, along with a daughter Nancy Ellen Akin, who later married John S. Robinson. About 1885, John S. Robinson died and left Nancy Elizabeth caring for 6 children and her aging father, James W. Akin, and step-mother, Mary Ann (Lawson) Akin. At this time, they loaded up on a train or covered wagon, as I do not know how they made it to Missouri, but they joined James W. Akin's 2nd born son, William Oscar Akin and Mary Susan (Walker) Akin in Barry Co., MO where they both lived out their life. Cemetery Directory

SSW: James W., Mary and William O. - Research Note: Row 5 - Plot 64C - Wife of William Oscar Akin. Daughter of Russell Walters and Margaret Mayhoffer, both born TN. - Joplin Globe 1938 - Mr. and Mrs W. O. Akin who live in the Leann community near Jenkins are believed to be the oldest couple in Missouri. They are the parents of O. H. Akin, of Pioneer, and of Mrs. R. A. Ellis, of Ozark Township, and grandparents of attorney, Royle Ellis, of Cassville. Mr. and Mrs. Akin are each 94 years old. A few days ago Mrs. Akin wrote the following which appeared this morning, Thursday, in the Joplin Globe: "I was born in Ray (Rhea) County, Tenn. in 1844, and moved over the Cumberland mountains to Overton county; lived there until 1862, then, during the Civil War, was married in Cumberland, KY., and lived there until 1871, when we came to Missouri. We homesteaded 80 acres of land and are still living on the old homestead. I am the mother of eight living children. My oldest son died a year ago. When we came here (Barry County), it was almost a wilderness. Wild game was plentiful. Wild turkeys would come near our house and feed with the chickens. We improved our farm, but have gone through many hardships. But I still am up and busy all the time, cutting pieces and quilting quilts. I have pieced 10 quilt tops in the last year, and quilted some of them. I am always at work at something. I lay my ripe old age to industry and honesty, and living a Christian life. When I have time, I read my Bible and try to obey the commandments as far as I can. I will be 94 years old the sixteenth of August. My husband is an invalid. He was 94 the fourteenth of last April." "This is written by my own hands and eyes." "Mrs. Susan Akins" - Notes of R. C. Akin at findagrave.com: Susan A. Walker's parents were Russell Dyer Walker and Margaret Mahaffey. Susan A. Walker married William Oscar Akin on 27 Oct. 1867, in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY. They had two sons born in Kentucky before settling in Barry County, MO where they had 6 more children. They traveled by covered wagon and settled with William Oscar, who was a stone mason, in Barry County, MO with her three sons. Land Records indicate her husband William Oscar purchased 31 acres in 1882 and 40 acres in 1890, all in Barry County. Remnants of the foundation to their house and spring house still exist on their original property. Susan and William Oscar Akin had 8 children together, all surviving to produce a large families in the Barry County and surrounding areas. They were: Richard Leslie Akin, James Russell Akin, Hiram Preston Akin, Mary Susan Akin, Ruth Ann Akin, Oscar Herschel Akin, William Fred Akin, and Emmet Lee Akin. Cemetery Directory

SSW: Susan A., James W. and Mary - Research Note: Row 5 - Plot 64B - His wife was Susan Walker. Son of William Akin and Ruth Harris?. Mrs. R. A. Ellis of Aurora, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, April 18, 1918 - Celebrates 84th Birthday: Six of the children of W. O. Akin of Leann happily surprised him Sunday when they assembled at his home with well filled baskets and assisted him in the celebration of his 84th birthday. W. O. Akin is 84 and his wife is 81 and both in fairly good health. Mr. Akin is very active for a man of his advanced years. They came to this county and located on the farm where they now live about 45 years ago and are among the county's most highly respected citizens. Mr. Akin was born and reared in Kentucky. Mrs. Akin is a native of Tennessee. When they came to Missouri they first located near Verona and later moved to the farm which has since been their home where they raised their family of eight children, six sons and two daughters. The six sons who spent Sunday with their parents and made it a most pleasant day for them are: Lee Akin of this city, R. L. of Carl Junction, James of Carthage, H. P. and W. F. of Galena and Herschel of Leann. The two daughters are, Mrs. R. C. Davis of Exeter and Mrs. R. A. Ellis of near Aurora, neither of whom could be present on account of sickness. - Notes of R. C. Akin at findagrave.com: William Oscar Akin was the 3rd born child and son of James W. Akin b. 6 Sept 1810 in the Burkesville area of Cumberland Co., KY and d. 1890 in Jenkins Twp, Barry Co., MO and, possibly, Ruth Norris, according to the death certificate of William Oscar Akin informed by his daughter, Mary Susan (Akin) Ellis. Little is known about his mother except that she died abt 1849-1850, most likely from complications of childbirth to her 4th child, Nancy Ellen Akin. It is believed also, that it is possible his mother was half native American Cherokee. This is, I believe somewhat remote, according to what I have read about the history of Cumberland County, but there was a very small band of Cherokee Indians that did live in Cumberland Co., KY during this time period. There is a very good chance, also, that his mother was born in Tennessee because of William Oscar Akin reportedly being born in Paris, Henry Co., TN. The only reason I have input William Oscar Akin being born in Henry Co., TN is because it was entered on his Death Certificate by his daughter. His father and mother were living in Cumberland County, KY at the time, so it is a mystery as to why he might have been born in Tennessee unless the mother traveled to her family or was visiting her family at the time of birth. There is really no evidence that I have seen though, other than that, that he might have been born in Tennessee. The gravestone of William Oscar Akin and his wife Susan Ann Walker contain two other names. William Oscar's father, James W. Akin and James W. Akin's 2nd spouse, Mary, by which he had no children. This gravestone is not period for James W. Akin and his wife Mary and was most likely added at a later date when William Oscar Akin died. William Oscar Akin married Susan Walker Akin on 27 Oct. 1867, in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY. They had two sons born in Kentucky before settling in Barry County, MO where they had 6 more children. William Oscar Akin was a stone mason and put his talents to work paving the main streets of Aurora in the late 1800's, but he also pursued farming. Land Records indicate he purchased 31 acres in 1882 and 40 acres in 1890, all in Barry County. Remnants of the foundation to their house and spring house still exist on their original property. William and Susan had 8 children together, all surviving to produce a large family in the Barry County and surrounding areas. Cemetery Directory

BURKE, Marjorie "Symira Marie" (JOHNSON) Oct. 29, 1906

Aug. 29, 1994
San Antonio, TX
Research Note: Daughter of Samuel Greenberry Johnson and Ida Milton. - Written by Marjorie: IN HER OWN WORDS - Just how can I put 50 years of experience on paper? I have traveled, visited and lived in all fifty states, Canada and Mexico, traveling by trains, autos, airplanes, ships, sleighs and dog sled. I have been: an Army Officer's wife, member of Mason's auxiliary, Daughter of Nile (Princess), Woman's Voter League, Toast Mistress and Chief of Communications Center in Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Signal Corps and U.S.A. Corps of Engineers. I also have talked to peoples of most every nation, have danced under the stars on Diamond Head, Hawaii. In fact, I have been so many places, known so many people and done so many things that I can't recall them all. I married an Army Officer in California, have traveled the entire West Coast from Mazatlan, Mexico to Nome, Alaska, and you know -- that Good Ole AHS (Aurora High School) opened all the doors for me, really led me into the lands of enchantment -- Oh! How great! I retired in 1970, from U.S.A. Corps of Engineers. Now hang my hat in my friend's house. We are alone now, with our mates gone. So life would not be so nice without Lula, whom I have known over forty years. We live in Texas City, 35 miles south of Houston, TX and fifteen miles north of Galveston, TX. Since 1971, Lula and I have traveled the Pacific Coast, Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico shore lines -- We have been through every National Park, the Cascade, Rocky and Great Smokey Mountains. Now!!! The mind is not so sharp or quick on recall and the "Back Roads of my Mind" get hazy and cloudy sometimes but I do hope you enjoy reading this as much as I have writing "The Look Into the Past." Yes, there have been many tears of joy, sorrow and gladness but that only makes us stronger and better. I hope we all have known the "Sweet and Sour" of this beautiful Old World. Remember "LITTLE OLE ME". - Another Photo Headstone
