From January 10, 1947 until May 28, 1948 he served in the United States Army. For a few years he resided in Wichita, Kansas where he was a guard at Boeing Aircraft and worked for the Sheriff Patrol. After returning to southwest Missouri he became a deputy sheriff for Barry County for a while. SSW: Opal F. - Research Note: He served in the CCC at Roaring River before joining the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He was a World War II veteran having served in the European Theater under General George Patton. Following his return from the War he married Opal Smith on July 18, 1948. He always had a love of working with his hands and was a carpenter his entire life. He loved to train bird dogs and had a great knack for it; his trained dogs were sold all over the country to people of all walks of life, including politicians and movie stars. Lamoin began carving when he was in his 50s, but had always "whittled." He began teaching himself how to carve some simple pieces, and then began tackling more difficult pieces that included a bust of John F. Kennedy and beautiful horses. He was a completely self-taught artist, including making his own knives that he worked with. He became a favorite at Silver Dollar City, carving and selling pieces there for more than 12 years. Opal Frances (Smith) Weathers was born September 4, 1929 near Cato, MO., later moving with her family to Cassville, MO. where she attended school and graduated with the Class of 1948. While a senior in high school, she was voted "best smile" and continued smiling throughout her life. On July 18, 1949 she married James Lamoin Weathers of Washburn, MO. She was a devoted wife and loving stay at home mom to their three children. The family resided in Exeter, MO. where she was active in all school activities including home room mother and serving as President of the Exeter P.T.A. She was proud to be a part of an organization that honored our Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. For over 10 years she was a volunteer at the Second Act in Cassville, MO. She enjoyed her hobby of Genealogy and tirelessly searched for ancestry information for both sides of the family. Opal was known around Cassville as the "hat lady", because she always wore cute and fashionable hats. Preceding him in death were his parents; grandparents, Wyatt and Belle Lawson and Amos and Clara Williams and one brother, Kevin Williams. Darrell grew up in Seligman, Missouri and was a 1958 graduate of Southwest High School. Before moving to Tennessee Darrell worked for Webb's Butane Service, Tasty Kraft Dairy, Purdy and Springdale Farms, living in Miami, Oklahoma and Springfield, Missouri during those years. On August 21, 1967, he began working for Consolidated Freightways as an over the road truck driver, retiring in September, 2002. Before his retirement he was the guest of honor at a ceremony to mark three million driving miles accident free. At that time Consolidated Freightways dedicated a truck in Darrell's honor. Darrell was a member of Hickory Hollow Baptist Church in Antioch, Tennessee, where he served as a Deacon and ministered to his deacon families.
