Kettle Mountain Family Cemetery, Barry Co., MO
Directions: From the north get to the intersection of 76 and M and take M south, just past Mano Cemetery, turn right on HWY E, go about 2 miles on E to a modern log cabin home on the right, owned by Mr. Wright. Kettle Mountain is behind his home and he will let you walk up there and give you directions.
It was not the steep climb that I had expected. Years ago, when Loyd Shrum went up there, they went up the other side and it was a really hard climb.
Loyd says that his gg grandfather Peter King Shrum wanted to be buried on Kettle Mountain and that his coffin was hauled up the mountain by horse and wagon as far as they could go and then was carried the rest of the way by the family and friends.
Loyd reported that on the first trip they had found 3 rocks as headstones but we only found 2 this time. It appeared to me that the smaller one might have been broken off.
Loyd Shrum and the two stones, believed to be for Peter and his son Peter. Loyd Shrum, a great-great grandson, holding Peter King Shrum's stone - In the background is Bonnie (Rose) Shrum, Loyd's wife.
Kettle Mountain is the mountain in the background in between the trees.
This photo was taken in Mano Cemetery.

Research Note: GG Grandson of Peter King Shrum has been to the grave site and verifies that there are 3 graves. It has been passed down through generations that one of the graves is that of Peter King Shrum, Sr. One of the other graves may be that of Peter King Shrum, Jr., who died at the age of 19. No idea who the third may be. Most likely another family member. Peter Sr.'s first wife probably died in Kentucky. His second wife Amy Parsley, much younger, remarried after his death to Jacob H. Reel in Barry Co., Missouri. | Family knowledge Phyllis Long |
