In WW II, he served in the US Navy on the air craft carrier, Ticonderoga. He married Mary Aileen Holmberg on December 21, 1946. They made their homes on farms in Northwest IA before moving to their farm in SW MO in 1957. Together they raised eight children. Mr. Batschelet was a cattle farmer and worked in construction before retiring in 1983.
