HUDSON, "Joe" Joseph Nunley Jan. 9, 1860

Jenkins,
Barry Co., MO
SSW: A. Cora - Research Note: Joseph Nunley married A. Cora Maxwell, Oct. 18, 1883. Joseph was Obediah and Sarah's son. - The death certificate gives his mother as Cora McKinney which is incorrect. Cora was his wife. Obediah was born in AL. Fred Hudson of Jenkins, MO was the informant. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, January 21, 1926 - Prominent Farmer Dies: Early Thursday morning the sad message "He's dead" went from lip to lip, throughout the community, when one of our best citizens had suddenly been beckoned by the grim death angel, to come up higher, and he bade farewell to loving relatives and friends, and passed to the great beyond, where he was promised eternal life. Within this world's vocabulary there are no words that send forth a sadder message than these, yet, if one deliberate wish could bring him back to this world, which one of us would utter it? Joseph Nunley Hudson, son of Obediah and Sarah (Stockton) Hudson, pioneer residents of the Cedar Mound district, was born on the farm where he always resided, on January 8, 1860, and departed this life January 14, 1926, after a brief illness, aged 66 years and 5 days. On October 18, 1883 he and Miss Ada Cora Maxwell of Hailey, Mo. were united in marriage. To this union was added fourteen children, five dying in infancy. Mr. Hudson is survived by his wife and nine children; Hattie Jordan, Charles and Fred Hudson, who reside near the old home, Mrs. Ruth Loftin of Mineral Spring, George Hudson in Idaho, Obediah Hudson in Washington, Mrs. Eleanor Hill and Samuel Hudson of Fort Scott, Kan. and Mrs. Gertrude Wright of Kansas City, also eleven grandchildren. Six sisters: Mrs. Lina Cornman of Jenkins, Mrs. Rachel Suttles and Mrs. Sallie Wilder of Pierce City, Mrs. Mary Long of McDowell, Mrs. Ella Cook of Holland, Texas and Mrs. Nannie Williams of Muskogee, Okla., one brother, William Hudson, who resides on an adjoining farm, are left to mourn his passing, together with a host of other relatives and many friends. Many years ago he united with the Church of Christ at Cato and was a faithful member until death. He was ever a faithful husband, indulgent father and a true friend, ever ready to assist those in sorrow or need. He worked hard and established a home and competence for himself and family and will be sadly missed in the home and community. Funeral services were conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Mound school house by Rev. George Cottrell with the Bradford Co. undertakers in charge. The tear be-dimmed eyes of the large assemblage that gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to their kinsman and friend, bears witness to the fact that he was beloved by his fellow-man and his place in the community will be hard to fill. The Hudson remains were laid to rest in Hudson cemetery on the old homestead where lie the pioneer members of the family awaiting the resurrection. - Nov. 18, 1899, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Joe Hudson was frightened Saturday night at what he thought to be a cyclone. It was found to be Allen Hailey and Dr. Newman in a cat chase. Death Certificate

HUDSON, Obediah Apr. 29, 1818
Morgan Co., AL
July 15, 1901
Barry Co., MO
SSW: Sarah - Research Note: Obediah Hudson came from Morgan Co., AL, to Barry County, MO and in 1857 he married Sarah Jane Stockton. Listed on the 1870 Barry Co., MO, Census. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, July 18, 1901 - Obediah Hudson, one of the pioneers of Barry County, died at his home near Hailey Monday evening at 7 o'clock. The deceased was 83 years of age and came to this country in the thirties, being one of the oldest residents in the county. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the family cemetery near Hailey. - Family History by By Duane Blankenship: Obediah Hudson was born Apr. 29, 1818 in Morgan Co., Alabama. He moved with his parents, brothers, and sisters to Shelby Co., IL in 1828, after living there until 1836, they headed for MO and settled where the town of Aurora now is, his father Joseph died on the trip. Obediah started a house about where the hospital now stands, but he wasn't satisfied, he wanted close to water, he saddled his horse one morning in the spring of 1838 and headed south. He came to Flat Creek in the vicinity of where Hwy. 39 is and liked what he saw, but, he traveled on south to the top of the ridges looking into the White River Country. After gazing south for a while, he turned around and headed home. He and his mother, sold their place to a man named Rinker (he was the one that finished the house) and came to Flat Creek, building their cabin about three or four tenths of a mile north and a little east of Hwy. 39 bridge. His great grandson Jim Hudson now lives there. Obediah began to accumulate land, after a few years he built his permanent home about one and one-fourth mile west and a little south of the first one, on Bear Branch. His mother lived with him until her death. His brothers and sisters married young, but he was 39 when he married Sarah Jane Stockton, she was 17. They had nine children: Mary Jane who married John Ripley; Joseph Nunley who married Cora McKinney (Maxwell); George Alexander who married Rebecca Jane Doty; Rachel M. who married Isaac H. Suttles; Sarah Evelyn "Sallie" who married George Merritt Wilder; Nancy who married William J. Williams; Amanda Caroline who married Horatio O. Cornman; James William who married Sarah Hannah Doty; Martha Ellen who married William Ellis Cook. Most of their offspring doesn't live here anymore. Joseph has a daughter, Ruth Loftin, living in Cassville, also some granddaughters, Reba Patton and Nadine Bradford, a granddaughter Una Henderson of Jenkins; Amanda Caroline has a grandson, Oscar Cornman living near Jenkins, also a granddaughter living at Aurora; James William has a son Walter in Kansas City, some grandsons and a granddaughter near Aurora. There are still several of George Alexander's offspring around here: Lon, Joe, Max, Joe David and Jim Hudson near Jenkins, Lottie Thomas and Leota Gautney of Aurora; Genine Lester of Verona, Lavern, and Larry Blythe, Clema Cope, Mal Hudson, Ray Hudson, Rex, Max, Roger Stumpff of Cassville, Tim and Steven Blankenship near Jenkins. When Obediah first settled on Flat Creek there wasn't many people living here. I have been told he was the first settler in this vicinity. The early settlers mostly settled along the streams of water. Mt. Pleasant was his nearest store, up close where Pierce city now stands. Springfield was his closest town. Obediah went to Springfield about once a year to get supplies and to get blacksmith shop work done. The trip took about one week as he went with ox team and wagon. On one of these trips during the Civil War times, he got back home as far as Flat Creek and was accosted by troops, they kept what they could use and dumped the rest in the creek, leaving him to come on up to the house empty handed. But, he was thankful because he wasn't harmed. Obediah said when he came here there wasn't much timber growing except along the streams of water and these hills were covered with grass. He was a member of the surveying party that surveyed Barry Co. There is a rock bluff a couple hundred yards from the house where he hid from the bushwhackers during the Civil War. When his sons were young, he gave each of them 40 acres of land, they were to pay him rent as long as he lived. His wife Sarah died July 20, 1873, he later married Mattie Raine. Obediah died July 15, 1901. After his death, the family couldn't agree on a settlement so all the land except the three forties was sold at auction, leaving the family. Most of the land is back in the family at this time. A great grandson, Duane Blankenship is living on the home place. - Photo and another bio of Obediah - Military Information: Civil War - 64th Regiment E.M.M., private, Union. Online Obit

HUDSON, Sarah Jane (STOCKTON) Abt. 1840 July 20, 1873 SSW: Obediah - Inscription: "Wife of Obediah Hudson - Aged 34 Y" - Research Note: Daughter of Elliot Stockton and Sarah Jane Hopper. Sarah Jane Stockton married Obediah Hudson Oct. 2, 1857 in Barry Co., MO. Some of the Hudson family researchers have indicated that she was 43 at the time of her death and not 34 as the stone reads. The 1850 Census gives her as 10 years old, born about 1840 which would make her about 34. Census
