Reese, age 30, on Aug. 15, 1901 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, March 26, 1914 - Dead: Mrs. Isabelle Reese, wife of Al Reese, died Thursday, March 19, 1914, at her home in this city, after a short illness, age 36 years, 1 month, and 29 days. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Meader, who reside south of town. A husband, five children, an infant babe survive. Besides her parents, she also leaves four brothers and five sisters. The funeral services conducted by Rev. John Elkins, were held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., at the Horner Church and interment was buried in the cemetery near by. When 28 years of age, the deceased professed faith in Christ and lived a consistent Christian life. E, 98 ILLS INF. - Cassville Republican, December 24, 1914 Oak Ridge News: Mr. Reynolds, our teacher got the sad news Sunday notifying him of the death of his father at Newton, Kan., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jennie Henley. Henry Reynolds was 81 years old. He had lived in Oak Ridge district since the early seventies, except for the last few years he has lived with is son, Frank of Madry and a daughter, Mrs. Darb Henley of Kansas. He was a member of the Baptist Church and was the moving power that built the Baptist Church at Oak Ridge on the place owned by Mr. Payne. He leaves three sons, Frank of Madry, Albert of Kansas, Thomas of Oak Ridge and one son in the west and six daughters, one somewhere in the west, Dora Newby of Kansas, Lillie Shumard of Florida, Jennie Henley of Kansas, Viola Baker and Annie Wallen of Cassville. The remains were shipped to Cassville and buried in the Horner Cemetery Tuesday. To the bereaved we extend our sympathy. - Same Paper - Henry C. Reynolds Dead: Henry C. Reynolds who formerly resided in the Oak Ridge locality east of town died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jennie Henley, at Newton, Kan. His body arrived here for burial Tuesday morning. Interment was made at the Horner Cemetery Tuesday afternoon following funeral services conducted at the Horner Church by Rev. W. M. Coons. For seven years he had been an invalid, being afflicted with heart trouble and complication of other diseases. Most of this time he was confined closely and at times bedfast. He was born in Illinois November 18, 1833, making him 81 years and 29 days old. In 1870 he came to Cherokee County, Kan. In 1877 he moved to this county, locating east of town. Here he lived until about three years ago when he went to Kansas to live with a daughter. He was the father of fifteen children, ten of who are living. They are Levi of California, Mrs. Boufink of Idaho, Mrs. Lillie Shumard of Florida, Mrs. Clara Newby and Mrs. Jennie Henley of Kansas, Mrs. Vila Baker and Mrs. Annie Wallen and Thomas east to town and F. M. of Ozark township. The deceased had been a member of the Baptist church since early life. He was one of the most highly respected of men and professed excellent habits and force? of character. Research Note: Son of George Corniluis Rinehard "Neal" and Ida Belle (Garner) Robbins. On Apr. 28, 1975 he was united in marriage to Nancy Ford, who survives. Also surviving are two sons; one daughter; and five grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Herman Robbins, Wilbur Marvin Robbins, Glen Levere Robbins, Charles Lindy Robbins and Joseph Marion Robbins; five sisters, Nina Luceil Kipps, Dorthy Belle Evans, Gladys Fern Robbins, Arvilla Mae Stringer and Pauline Stewart and one grandchild, an Angel Baby. Cecil grew up and attended school (if he wasn't skipping to go fishing) in Cassville, Missouri. He enlisted in the United States Navy serving four years aboard the USS J Douglas Blackwood earning a Navy Good Conduct Medal. Cecil worked in construction most of his life. He did everything he could to help Nancy raise their kids, even though some jobs were not easy, he wanted to give them the best of everything. Hunting was his passion, he hunted deer, birds, rabbits, coons and squirrels with family and friends. He enjoyed all types of fishing but most of his time was spent at Roaring River State Park fly fishing with his kids and brother, Glen. Cecil enjoyed tying his own flies which he started at the age of six, he also enjoyed tying flies for friends and family. He loved planting a garden for the family in the spring, it was always beautiful. Spending time outdoors was a given, he enjoyed just sitting under a shade tree watching the wildlife. Her stay on earth was short but during that time her loving heart so attracted her dear parents, brothers, and sisters that it was a great struggle for them to say goodbye. Research Note: Photo of stone at findagrave.com. Death Certificate says she was the daughter of Levi Hefley and Isabell Criner. According to 1850 Census, her mother was named Caroline. It also gives her birth year as 1834 and 102 years old when she died. R. L. Thomas was her husband when she died. B. B. Hefley of Cassville, MO was the informant. - Miancer Lewis married Louisa Hefley on Feb. 2, 1857 in Barry Co., MO. Samuel Rudd, age 56, married Lou Lewis, age 54, on Nov. 26, 1896 in Barry Co., MO. Lou Rudd married Robert L. Thomas on Apr. 30, 1910 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican May 14, 1936 - Lou Hefley Thomas, widow of the late Robert Thomas, of the community south of Cassville. Passed away Monday night at the Henson home two miles southeast of Cassville where she had been living for the past few months, Mrs. Thomas is believed to have been the oldest citizen of this county at the time of her death. Her brother, B. B. Hefley, says he cannot be certain about his sister's age but that she was not far from 100 years old. Mr. Hefly remembers that his sister had said that she was a young married women at the time she and her young husband started across the Plains to the Pacific Coast and joined the train of immigrants which were attacked in what is known in history as The Mountain Meadow Massacre. This occurred in 1854, or 82 years ago. Mr. Hefley believes that his sister married at the age of sixteen, and if they undertook their trip West that year it would make her 98 years old, at the least calculation. Her first husband lost his life in the Mountain Meadow Massacre. "Aunt Lou", as she was generally known, was one of the few who escaped that horrible tragedy with their lives. She was one of the pioneers of the Pasley community south of Cassville, and had lived there the greater part of her life. - This story was in "A Horner Legacy" by Fredalene Cooper Horner, Litho Printers, Cassville, MO. 1988. Lou was seventeen at the time and newly married. Her husband is identified as Samuel Rudd, but is incorrect, since she married Samuel Rudd on Nov. 26, 1896. It is mentioned that she was married 4 times. Must be a first husband. - This true story was told by Lou Rudd to Eva Smith League in 1933 and was published in "Reader's Digest". "A group of wagons from the Cassville, MO area gathered at the Horner Spring on the Isaac Horner farm, and from there they traveled to Fort Leavenworth, KS where they had arranged to meet and to take off to what was then the dangerous country of CA. Whole families were in the caravan which traveled in covered wagons. The incident of that terrible massacre of white men, women, and children and even tiny babies is of course recorded in all recent histories of the United States. Lou Rudd, age 16, and her husband, Samuel Rudd (not Samuel) were in that company and her young husband was killed. The wagons from Cassville, MO arrived in Fort Leavenworth, KS where they had all arranged to meet, being fifty wagons in all. There were several individuals riding on horses or mules with blankets and clothes in great rolls tied behind the saddles. The Army post from which they started had been stationed to protect new white settlers coming in from other states from the hostile Indians. After leaving the Army post and the prairie lands of KS, for much of the way had no wagon roads at all. Therefore, roads had to be cleared through big timber and in some places jungles. The heavy wagons were drawn by horse teams, mule teams and some oxen. At evening time, the caravan would make camp close to a spring or stream of water. The wagons were drawn into a circle and after the teams were unhitched the wagons were pushed up as close as possible to another. This was done as a measure of greater protection if Indians were on the war path. Aunt Lou, as she was later called, couldn't remember to tell accurately exactly where the attack took place. Many guards were kept watching every night, but one night suddenly they were all awakened by the awful war whoop and savage yells of a great many Indians. The whites were all armed, but helpless as the Indians shot arrows from the darkness from every direction. Aunt Lou and four other women and a little boy found a place to slip through; this they did barefooted as they were still in their sleeping garments, but the little boy had grabbed his bow and arrows. The five women and the little boy ran a great way in the dark and hid all night in the bushes until the time finally came when the awful yells of the Indians ceased. They remained hidden until sunrise and in the dawn Aunt Lou and one of the women ventured back into the now utterly silent camp where there was not a sign of life. They watched and waited and at last all of them went into the camp. Everyone of the whites were dead and nearly all had been scalped. Every animal was gone and every bite of food and the bedding and everything was gone. All that remained was the cold, silent faces of the dead everywhere they looked. Aunt Lou cradled in her arms the dead body of her young husband. Grief stricken and heavy hearted but bravely facing the challenge, the little band of women and the boy, barefooted and without a bite of food, with only a bow and arrows for a weapon, started on the long journey to return to the place in KS where the caravan had started. They traveled only at night trying to keep on the trail they had used coming in. The boy shot a small elk and the survivors had meat. They knew some roots that were all right to chew and bark of slippery elm and a few others were safe to chew and swallow the juice. They trudged on, hiding by day and walking by night. Aunt Lou said that sometimes they would give up hope of ever reaching home and were so hungry that hunger would force them out into the day time when the boy would kill a rabbit and they would again have meat. Finally at long last, the day came when these five women and the young boy wearily reached Fort Leavenworth. They were cared for and received medical aid and given clothes and shoes. Aunt Lou's father lived about four miles south of Cassville, MO was notified immediately that his little daughter was there. So Levi Hefley hurriedly hitched a team to a farm wagon and rushed to Fort Leavenworth, and brought his little girl home. She was 17 at the time, in the winter or late fall of 1848. She was 102 years old when she died in 1936 and is buried in the Horner Cemetery just one quarter mile NW of where the wagon train gathered so many long years before. She was preceded in death by four husbands, the last being Bob Thomas, Sr. who has many descendants in this locality. The marriage certificate gives Humphrey Sanders and Kessiah Burton. - Note: Linda says his mother was Kessiah (Burton) Sanders and that his death certificate is incorrectly stated with his mother given as Catherine. She says that Catherine was Kessiah's sister and that she married Morgan Fletcher. Another researcher, Norma Hayward, says that his father's name was not James. Sanders were on the census in Cedar Twp., Carroll County, Arkansas. Their children were Elmer 6, Clarence 4, and Bulah 9 months. In 1908 Dan Sanders was the blacksmith at the stone quarry in Cassville, Missouri. In 1910 (Humphrey) Daniel and Sarah E. Sanders were on the Flat Creek, Barry County, Missouri census. Their children were Elmer 16, Clarence 13, Bulah 12, Fredrick 8, Lula 5, Opal 3, and Ambaline 9 months. Daniel was a farmer. In 1920, Daniel 47, Sara E. 47, Fred A. 17, Lular G. 14, Opal E. 12, Rosa A. 10, Ruby P. 8, and Gracy J. 5 were on the Flat Creek, Barry County, Missouri census. Dan was a farmer. On the 1930 Census in Purdy, MO, Dan was a telephone lineman and daughters Ruby and Jewel were telephone operators. Dan and Sarah's son Clarence made very nice finger rings from coins. This must be a remnant of the family blacksmithing. I understand from family members that Dan was also a preacher at the Butterfield Oneness Pentecostal Church. H. Dan Sanders died Apr. 15, 1950 of Hypostatic Pneumonia and Myocardial Degeneration. Research Note: He was married and a farmer and a son of Robert Sands and Frances Nall, both born KY. His wife, Frances, was the informant of Cassville, MO. - Cassville Republican, April 6, 1911 - R. H. Sands died very suddenly at his home about three miles southwest of Cassville, Tuesday morning April 4. He had been sick only for a day or two and that was not thought to be serious. Sunday and Monday he had been bothered with a stomach trouble. Tuesday morning he was up and around about the house, he turned suddenly sick at his stomach and in a very short time expired. The news of his death was a great shock to his neighbors and to friends over the county as he was known to be in general good health. Mr. Sands was one of the prosperous farmers in this community. He was in every respect an excellent citizen. He was a valuable citizen to the locality in which he lived was progressive and always interested in pushing for better things. As a farmer he was a leader and was successful. He will be greatly missed. He leaves a widow and four daughters and three sons. One daughter and two sons are unmarried and are at home. The funeral is to be held Thursday (today) and interment made at Horner Cemetery. - April 1911 - Tuesday morning the sad news was telephoned to this city, that R. H. Sands had died at his home, 4 miles southeast of this city, of neuralgia of the stomach, aged 55 years. He had only been sick but three days, and his sudden death, cast a gloom over that neighborhood in this city, where he was so well and favorable known. He was born in Rushville, Ill., grew to manhood and later on was married and to this union was born six children who are: Mrs. Bert Horner, Mrs. Dossie Farewell, Hubert Otto, Chester of near Cassville and Mrs. Walter Bass of Sarcoxie. Mr. Sands was a member of the Holiness Church, was a splendid husband, father, citizen and neighbor and this section will miss him. Rev. Research Note: Cassville Democrat, April 13, 1907 - Thomas Saunders, age 19 years, died Friday, April 12, 1907, at the home of his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Henbest, about 2 miles east of town of pneumonia. His brother John arrived a short time before he died from Weeleetka, I. T. and James, another brother, arrived in time for the funeral. Thomas came from Weketka [two different spellings] I. T. to attend school in this city and took sick on the 6th, and died the 12th. Everything that relatives could do to restore him to health was done, but without avail Tom's spirit returned to Him who gave it. The remains were laid to rest in the Horner Cemetery, Saturday. He was a son of the late Monroe Saunders a former well known citizen of Golden, and a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ledgerwood of near Shell Knob. The relatives request us to return their heartfelt thanks to their neighbors and friends for their very kind assistance during his sickness. - Carole Martin Ring's Note: He was a son of the late Monroe Saunders, age 19. I finally his obit in your newspapers online. I have looked for years to find out what happened to Thomas A. Saunders. The only time I found him was on the 1900 census in Mena, Polk Co., Arkansas. By the time the rest of the family got to Oklahoma the Saunders name was being spelled as Sanders. Thomas A Sanders was born in May 1888 to William Monroe Sanders and Mary J. Moles. Mary Jane Moles and William Monroe Sa(u)nders were my great great grandparents. Mary and Matilda Ledgerwood and Paschal "Weep" Moles were siblings. William M. Sanders is buried (April 18 1900) in Polk Co., AR in the Owen Chapel Cemetery in Acorn, Polk Co., AR, as is Paschal A. "Weep" Moles who was killed in Wetumka, I.T. (OK). Everyone knows the story about how Weep Moles was killed by gunshot. The Bill Sanders who is mentioned in a couple of articles I have found over the years was the older brother of Thomas Sa(u)nders and the son of Mary J. Obituary: Sellers: Died, Thursday, Dec. 28, 1899, at 6:30 p.m., James Calvin Sellers, aged 75 years, 5 months and 27 days. With the passing of Elder J. C. Sellers disappears one of the pioneers and most prominent members of the Baptist church of Barry County. Since the organization of the Barry County Association sixteen yeas ago he had continuously presided as moderator and assisted in the institution of many churches over the county. He was one of the founders of the First Baptist Church of Cassville, organized on Saturday before the first Sunday in June 1883, and also Cassville NO. 2. James Calvin Sellers was born in Hamilton Co., Tenn., near Ooltewah, July 1, 1824, where he married Frances Reagan, Dec. 21, 1848. About 1862 he moved to Benton Co., Ark., where he was a neighbor of M. C. Messer's parents, and shortly after came to Barry County, settling on White River. In 1856-7, he taught school on Kings Prairie and among his pupils were Mr. and Mrs. Geo. M. Goodnight of Cassville and Houston Marbut of McDowell. While living on White river he had charge of the Easley ferry and after the battle of Pea Ridge moved to Springfield. In 1868, he returned to this county, locating on the place where he died, four miles southeast of Cassville. In 1874-5, he was superintendent of the public schools of this county and in 1878 he was elected county treasure on the Democrats ticket. He was one of the charter members of Pythagoras Lodge, A. F. and A. M. of this place. Services were conducted at Horner Church, Saturday by Eld. J. C. Research Note: She was the wife of Cyrus Smith. - Cassville Republican, January 23, 1913 - Mrs. Mary Smith passed suddenly from time to eternity at her home in this city about 12 o'clock Wednesday of last week of heart failure. She had expressed herself during the day in her usual health and attended her daily duties about the home. She had just finished her noon meal, and was walking to a couch to rest when the fatal stroke came. Her neighbors had noticed that during the past several months she appeared to be growing quite feeble but were shocked to hear of her sudden death. Mrs. Mary Smith was born in Granger County, Tenn., in 1840, and since 1880 had lived in this county, the principal part of the time about four miles southeast of Cassville. Some years ago she moved to Cassville where she was spending her remainder of her days. Her husband Cyrus Smith died in 1892. To them were born 5 children, four of whom are living. Adison Smith of Hermiston, Ore., Charley of Kans., Mrs. Harry Bass of Hugo, Okla., and Miss Minnie Smith of Cassville. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Horner Church, conducted by Rev. J. W. Brock and interment made in the Horner Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was one of the very best of neighbors and one of this community's very best citizens. Research Note: His wife in the 1880 Census is Elizabeth, age 60. Second wife was Mrs. Mary Moore. - August 21, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO - Thomas Smith, aged about 80 years, died at his home on Rock House in Mineral Township, Thursday of general debility, after an illness of about two months. "Uncle Tommy" Smith as he was known, was born in East Tennessee, and had been a resident of Barry County for a number of years and was well known by all the old timers. He leaves a wife and two sons, Robert Smith of Oklahoma and Jas. Smith of Mt Vernon to mourn his death. He was married twice, marrying Mrs. Mary Moore, mother of Frank Moore of near town, the second time. His wife and son James were at his bedside when he died. Funeral services were held at the Horner Cemetery Friday afternoon at four o'clock by Rev. Wesley Ennis after which the remains were laid to rest in the Horner Cemetery. One by one the old timers are called to the great beyond and it will be but a short time until they have all passed over the other side. We extend our sympathy in their sad hour of distress. - Obit for Mary, second wife of Thomas Smith: March 24, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - March the 11th at 5:25 a.m. the death angel visited our home and took our mother, Mrs. Mary Smith, wife of Thomas Smith and mother of Frank S. Moore. She was the daughter of Prier Bradley, was born in East Tennessee in 1845 and came with her parents to Barry county when she was six years old and had lived in Barry County ever since, except a few years in Dade County. She professed her faith in Christ when young and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and lived in that faith until her death. She had been afflicted for about seventeen years and could not attend church as she would have liked to do. She leaves three brothers and one sister and one son to mourn her death. Their loss is her gain. She died of heart trouble and dropsy and bore her affliction with patience and was ready to go. She was living at her son's and all was done that loving hands could do but Jesus said, it is enough, come up higher, where there is no more sickness nor goodbyes. Rev. J. W.
