Research Note: Son of Marguerite Ann Bradley and William Darius Manley. - Cassville Republican, Mar. 23, 1893 - Birl Elmer, little son of W. D. and M. A. Manley, died of brain fever. By the death of this darling child, which resulted after a few days illness, the cherished hopes of fond and living parents are disappointed. The funeral services were attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends. Research Note: Daughter of W. D. Manley and Mary Elizabeth Bender. - Cassville Republican, July 18, 1895 - Died, Tuesday, July 16, 1895, at 3:15 a.m., Rosa Ella Manley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Manley, age 19 years, 11 months, and 16 days. Rosa was a young lady who was reared in Cassville and from infancy to womanhood made many warm friends. Her school days were passed here and with the class of '94, she graduated from the Cassville High School and was the first to break its ranks. The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church by Rev. J. C. Inscription: "Father Has Gone Home" - Research Note: Civil War Veteran. He married first Mary Elizabeth Bender, second Margaret Ann Bradley on Nov. 5, 1874 in Barry Co., MO, and third Eliza Anna (Flaherty) Johnson, widow of F. G. Johnson. William D. Manley, age 58, married Anna Johnson, age 47, on May 2, 1897 in Cassville, Barry Co., MO. Eliza is buried at Mano Cemetery. - Cassville Republican, August 12, 1897 - The Mayor Dead: Cassville was considerably startled Saturday morning to hear that the Mayor W. D. Manley, had died, very suddenly at 10 o'clock the night before of heart failure after an illness of twenty minutes. The news was the more exciting because the day before, he had been apparently in his usual health and had presided over a case tried before him. Friday night about 10 o'clock he was sitting on his porch enjoying the fresh air, when the fatal stoke fell. Although a doctor was immediately summoned, it was too late. W. D. Manley was born in Medline Co., Oh., June 22, 1838, but his parents moved to Fulton Co., Ind., two years later, and in 1852 to Richland Co., Wis. In 1858 he started for Texas and on his way was stopped a few months in Hickory Co., MO, thence going to Denton, Tex. The following year he went to Ft. Smith, Ark., thence to where Hackett, Arkansas now is, where he married Miss Elizabeth Bender. In June 1862 he came to Cassville, but later went to Wisconsin, and until his return to Cassville in 1867 was in Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. In 1870, Squire Manly was elected justice of the peace and was serving his fifth term at the time of his decease. In 1894 he was elected mayor and was re-elected June 19, last to fill vacancy. In 1872 he professed religion at Horner Church and was one of the charter members of the First Baptist Church of Cassville upon its organization. The remains were interred with Masonic honors in Horner Cemetery, Saturday, by the side of his first and second wives and children. He was the father of fourteen children, nine of who survive him. Quite recently he was re-married. - Goodspeed's History - W. D. Manley, J. J. Wallen and W. C. Hawk were poor farm commissioners in 1880. - William D. Manley, justice of the peace, notary public, and pension insurance and land agent, of Cassville, MO is a native of Medina Co., OH. He was born in 1838, and is the son Menzies S. and Minerva (Sippy) Manley. His father was of English descent, was born in CT in 1805, and was a farmer by occupation. After his marriage he removed to Medina Co., OH, and thence, in 1840, to Fulton Co., IN. He resided there until 1852, when he went to Richland Co., WI, where he died ten years later. His wife, nee Minerva Sippy, was of French descent. She was born in PA in 1815, and is now living in Sanborn, O'brien Co., IA. She was the second wife of Mr. Manley, and is the mother of four children, of whom William D. is the second. Our subject remained with his parents until twenty years of age, when he removed to the "Lone Star" state, where he went to work upon a farm. The next year he went to Sebastian Co., AR, where in 1861 he married Mary E. Bender, who was born in that county in 1844. In June, 1862, Mr. Manley entered the employ of the United States Government, and was sent to MO. In 1867 he located in Barry Co., one and one-half miles south of east of Cassville. In 1870 he was elected justice of the peace, which office he has since held continuously, and has administered its duties with good judgment and uncompromising integrity, as his long term of service testifies. On Mar. 8, 1887, he was commissioned a notary public, and a year later was appointed pension agent. He has also engaged in the insurance business. Since 1871 he has been a resident of Cassville. Mr. Manley has been twice married. His first wife died in Aug. 1876, leaving four children: Charles, John W., Alice and Irene I., and in Dec. 1877, he was united in marriage to Margaret Bradley, who was born in Barry Co., MO in 1848. They have five children: Rosa, Pearl, Burl, Bonnie, and George. Mr. Manley is a Democrat in politics, and he is a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Baptist Church. Research Note: Preston first married Salinda Baird, Dec. 31, 1876, in Barry Co., MO. She was a daughter of Josiah Marion and Mary Jane (Moore) Baird. He was a son of James and Mary Ann (Longley) Matlock, both born TN. - The death certificate gives his wife as Cornelia Garrett (second wife). Mrs. E. B. Correll of Cassville, MO was the informant. - January 25, 1912, Cassville Republican - Preston Matlock returned last week from Oklahoma where he had been during the past few months. - September 25, 1913, Cassville Republican - The marriage of Mrs. Corneila Garett to Preston Matlock was solemnized by Squire Plattenburg Tuesday evening. They are both highly esteemed citizens of our town. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 7, 1919 - Preston Matlock has bought the Rev. J. G. Elkins farm just west of town on the Exeter road. The place contains 25 acres. The consideration was $2,800. Mr. Matlock had a profitable strawberry crop on the place this year. A." - Research Note: She was married to Francis Asbury McCary and was a daughter of Isaac Elbert and Mary (Moore) Horner. - February 1, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - Interesting Letter from one of Barry County's Pioneer Citizens - Mr. Editor: - I have just returned from Cassville where I was called to attend the funeral of one of my aunts, Mrs. Anna McCary, who died at Fairview and was taken to the Horner Cemetery where she was raised. My grandfather Horner was the first one to be buried there fifty years ago. While I was there my mind ran back to my boyhood days. I am 63 years old. Came to Cassville in the year 1851 with my parents and spent my boyhood days around Cassville, Barry County. When I looked over Cassville and saw the fine houses, my mind went back 55 years ago. There was then 8 or 10 little log cabins. In those days we worked cattle instead of horses. Cut our wheat with a reap hook frailed it out. Some times a person could sell a load of wood for 75 cents per cord. In '61 came that awful war. I have seen 20,000 soldiers camped in Cassville, at one time. I saw Price's army march through Cassville going to fight at Wilson Creek. There was plenty of game in those days such as turkey, bear, and dear. Bear was plenty on Rock creek and Rock House. I helped to kill a bear when a boy on the head of Rock House by the spring, called the Neasley spring, but now is the Moulder Spring. I will tell you how the young folks did. I was 7 years old when I got my first pair of pants, mother spun the cloth for them. I was ten years old when my father made me a pair of shoes. People came very near starving in those days. We had to grit corn for our bread, pay 50 cents a pint for salt, 50 cents a pound for coffee, flour $10 per hundred, corn $2. per bushel, calico 25 cents a yard, and the worst of all no law to govern us. Everybody turned loose. I enlisted in the army at the age of 16, when it ended I found myself in Tennessee, I served in the 2 Arkansas Calvary. I want to hear from some of my comrades. Upon their return they mean to stock up their farm again, having sold off their stock a few weeks ago. - Cassville Republican Oct. 16, 1919 - Seymour McFarland of Baxter Springs, Kan., arrived last week for a visit with his uncle, L. N. McFarland, southeast of this city. He said that part of Kansas has a good yield of wheat and oats and fair corn this year considering the dry weather. - July 24, 1920, Cassville Democrat - L. N. McFarland went to Joplin Wednesday morning and will visit points in Kansas before returning. Ira Mitts was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Democrat, Aug. 23, 1929 - Anna Elizabeth Clingingsmith was born in Adams County, Illinois, April 24, 1856. She died at the home of her son Ira Mitts, in Cassville, at 9 p.m. Aug. 16, 1929, age 73 years, 3 months and 22 days. She was married to David Henry Mitts, April 9, 1873. To this union three children were born, who are: Will and Ira Mitts of Cassville, and Nova of Lamar, Colo. Mrs. Mitts came to Barry county in 1898 where she lived until her death. She was converted at the age of thirteen years and was a member of the Christian church of Cassville, where she remained a devoted member. She was a kind and loving mother, and did not want to cause any one any trouble. She is survived by her three children, two brothers, Leander Clingingsmith of Ulysses, Neb. and Lewis Vickers of Whitewater, Kansas. Also one sister, Kate Wright. She also leaves nine grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her passing. Her husband, D. H. Mitts, preceded her in death March 10, 1929. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 17, 1929 by Chas Vanzandt. Burial in the Horner cemetery, under the direction of the Horine Funeral Services. Mrs. Mitts was an excellent mother and neighbor. She was deeply loved by all her acquaintances and her every act was to do good. She had lived near this city for more than 40 years and enjoyed an extensive acquaintance. Died at his home three miles east of Cassville, Mo., March 10, 1929 age 73 years, five months and three days. He was married to Anna Clingingsmith April 9, 1878. To this union three children were born, who are: Will, Ira and Nova Mitts, all of Cassville. He moved from Illinois when 18 years of age, going to Trenton, Mo., and lived there until 1898, when he came to Barry County, east of Cassville, where he lived until death came. He was converted in 1901 and united with the Christian church at Cassville, where he remained a devoted member until death. He was a kind and devoted husband and loving father, a citizen who had many friends. He will be missed by his family and neighbors. He is survived by his wife, three sons, three brothers, Harvey Mitts, of Trenton, Mo., Tom Mitts of Burton, Ill., and one sister Hannah Brown of California. He also left nine grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his going. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church in Cassville, on Monday afternoon, March 11, 1929 by Chas Vanzandt, burial in the Horner Cemetery, under direction of the Hankins Funeral Service. Mr. Mitts had an extensive acquaintance throughout this section where he had resided many years and was a man that stood for honest straight-forward dealings. His word was his bond and all regarded him highly. A few years ago he operated a country store at his home and enjoyed a nice business. He also engaged in farming and was very successful. His estimable wife is an excellent lady and dearly loved by all who know her. His passing is a great loss to this section of the county and the Democrat joins the many friends of the Mitts family in extending sympathy in their said hour of bereavement. Many beautiful floral offerings were received by friends and relatives of the family and splendid music was rendered at the services by Mrs. John Ray, Mrs. Glen Pearl and Chas. Research Note: Cassville Republican, July 25, 1918 - Charles Morgan who had been afflicted for many years passed away Monday, July 22 at the county home, death having come very suddenly, at the age of 44 years, 4 months and 6 days. The funeral services were conducted at the Horner Baptist Church southeast of this city Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the body laid to rest in the cemetery nearby. Charles Eldon Morgan was born in Joplin March 16, 1874. He was a son of Rev. Marion Morgan (mother was Nancy Brady) now of Newton County but four years a well-known minister of this county. As a boy Charles lived in the Mt. Sinai and locations east of Cassville and was well known here. He had been afflicted for many years. He leaves a father, Rev. Marion Morgan, a sister, Mrs. D. L. Cox, and five brothers. The five brothers are: Sam, Columbus and Richard Newton County and James of Nebraska and Walter of Oklahoma. Morgan for years administer of the Gospel in this county, died Friday, June 27, at the home of his son, Richard, in Seneca from old age and general debility. His body was brought to this city Saturday evening and taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. L. Cox. The funeral, conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin, was held Sunday afternoon at the Horner Baptist church of which Rev. Morgan was a member for many years. Interment was made in the Horner cemetery. Richard Marion Morgan was born in Indiana Dec. 8, 1835. He came with his parents to Missouri when he was five years old. The family located in McDonald County and there R. M. grew to manhood. In about 1867 he moved to this county which was his home for many years. Some fifteen years ago he moved to Newton County. He was converted when in his teens and about 40 years or more ago was ordained as a Baptist minister. He was a man loved and respected by all who knew him and lived a devoted Christian life until called into eternal rest. He was married to Miss Lucinda Brady, Feb. 4, 1855. She died April 14, 1907. To them twelve children were born, three daughters and nine sons, of whom one daughter, Mrs. D. L. Cox, of Cassville and five sons are living. The sons are C. A., S. W. and R. A. of Seneca; W. E. of Kerwin, Kan., and J. L. of Washington, Neb. - August 19, 1915, Cassville Republican - Personal and Local News: R. M. Research Note: He was single and a farmer and listed as a son of Frank Murray, born IA, and Alice Shan, born Newton Co., MO. Mrs. Frank Murray of Cassville, MO was the informant. He drowned in White River. - Cassville Republican, May 30, 1912 - Drowns in White River: Elmer Murray, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Murray south of town on the old Sellers farm was drowned while swimming in White River, near the Easley ford southwest of Eagle Rock, Thursday afternoon. Elmer Murray, Luciene Horner, Hub Sands, Walter Sater, Clarence Farwell and Tobe James and one of his boys were on the river near the W. J. Farwell farm, fishing. While the other boys had gone up the river to set a trot line, Luciene Horner and Elmer Murray went swimming. Neither were acquainted with the river and after swimming for some little time they became exhausted and made an effort to swim to the bank. Horner finally succeeded in getting to where he was safe and noticed Murray going under the water and coming up again, this he thought was being done by Murray for sport in the water. The third time he went down he failed to come up. Horner was unable to assist in rescuing him and no other help was at hand, however two of three of the party were only a short distance away. The search began immediately for the body. The family was notified and the people from all over that section of the county gathered to render any assistance they could. After a fourth-two hour search, and anxious waiting on the part of the bereaved family, the body was found at 10 o'clock Saturday, the body having been in the water since 5 o'clock on Thursday afternoon. It was immediately brought to the Murray home near Cassville and Undertaker P. E. Horine prepared if for burial. The funeral was held Sunday and Interment made at the Horner Cemetery. Elmer was 10 years of age and an excellent young man. The affair is indeed a very sad one. Mrs. Mary Hankins of Cassville, MO was the informant. - Cassville Republican, March 1, 1894 - Vince Neeley has gone to Madison Co., Ark., to trade a horse. - January 13, 1917, Cassville Democrat - Another Arrest: Vince Neeley was arrest Wednesday on a charge of selling whiskey, on a warrant issued by Squire Sons, by Constable Smalley, and gave bond for his appearance on 22nd for preliminary examination. - January 25, 1917, Cassville Republican - At the trial of Vince Neeley, Monday, charged with violating the local option law, before Justice S. R. Reynolds, he was found guilty by a jury and fined $300. He appealed. - February 3, 1917, Cassville Democrat - Locals and Personal: Freeman Scroggins, __enze Neeley and Fred J__ were arrested Tuesday ____ by Sheriff Houston on a charge of disturbing the peace, on a warrant issued by Squire Sons. They gave bonds for their appearance before the justice Wednesday. Their bondsmen declined to serve as such and Scroggins and Neeley were placed in jail. Neeley plead guilty and is serving his fine out in the county jail. Scroggins made a new bond. - May 3, 1917, Cassville Republican - Vince Neeley's bondsmen refused longer to serve and he was committed to the county jail Saturday. Jack Neeley of Cassville, MO was the informant. - Cassville Republican, Jan. 30, 1930 - Mary Hewig McFarland was born in Waldo, Kan., May 5, 1902 and passed away at the home of her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. L. McFarland, near Cassville, Jan. 21, 1930. She came to Cassville when she was eleven years old and made her home with Mr. and Mrs. McFarland. She was married to Jack Neeley April 19th, 1925. To this union were born three children, Norma Arlene, age 4, Jack Leon, who passed away a year ago, and Frances Imogene, born Nov. 19, 1929. She leaves to mourn beside her husband and children, her mother, Mrs. Daniels of Norman, Okla., one brother, Bert and two sisters Daisy and Gladys, all of Webb City. Three half brothers of Norman Okla., and her foster parents Mr. and Mrs. N. L. McFarland. Faithful and true she was loved by all who knew her. She was a kind loving wife, mother and daughter. She possessed many excellent traits of character that have made the world better by her having lived. The tenderly solemn and consoling funeral service was conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. McFarland ,Thursday afternoon, at 1 o'clock, by Rev. W. T.
