The remains were laid to rest yesterday in the Horner cemetery. She was a good citizen and had been afflicted many weeks. She was the mother of Miss Polly and Joe Hall of near town; Mrs. Will Smith of Gideon, Okla.; and the late Mrs. Albert Smith of Golden. He was born May 5, 1926, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of LeRoy and Clara (Smith) Harrold. In 1934, the family moved to southwest Missouri, living in the Eagle Rock, Exeter, and Cassville areas. After attending school he was enlisted in the Army for a short time, worked at a bakery in Florida, and then worked at a ranch in Hugoton, Kansas for several years. She was united in marriage to Earl Hays May 27, 1913 and to this union one son Hector Hays, was born. She was united with the Nazarene Church of Cassville several years ago and lived a devoted Christian life. In addition to her son, she is survived by her husband; two sisters, Mrs. John Jennings of Cassville and Mrs. James Wilson of Aurora; one brother, Alonzo Flaherty; one niece, Mrs. Edward Clark of Verona. Two brothers preceded her in death several years ago. Funeral services were conducted Monday Feb. 4 at the Assembly of God church in Cassville by the Rev. Stanley J. Miller, pastor. Donna's Note: Her name is spelled Heffley on her death certificate. She was widowed and age 55 years and 27 days old. Her parents are given as John Simpson and Margaret Cherry, and the informant didn't know where they were born. The cause of death was cancer of the uterus and TB. The death certificate reads that she was buried in Corinth Cemetery on Apr. 9, 1917. George Reames gave the information. Millie Simpson married Lee Hefley on Sept. 19, 1883 in Barry Co., MO. - April 6, 1911, Cassville Republican - Ferne, the little four year old daughter of Mrs. Millie Hefley south of Cassville, three miles, was bitten by a small dog at their home Thursday. The dog was thought to be mad. Mrs. Hefley took the little girl to a mad stone Friday. The stone failed to adhere. - April 14, 1917, Cassville Democrat - Washburn Prairie: Mrs. Sarah Longley attended Mrs. Millie Hefley of Pasley during her last sickness. She died Sunday morning. Research Note: Obit by Glenda Rowland - John W. Hemphill died Monday morning at 7 o'clock at his home east of Cassville following an illness from dropsy. The deceased had been on the decline for many months, in fact ever since he went to White River to reside where dropsy symptoms first became evident. He applied to physicians in vain for relief. The disease grew until he no longer thought of the days he would live but looked peacefully on death as a resistless blow at pain. During his last sickness he would rally after operations had been performed but it would only last a few days. During one of these interims he visited Cassville, only a few weeks ago, just after he had moved from White River to the home east of Cassville. His many friends were more than glad to meet him but saw in his emaciated form the shadows of dissolution. The Judge, ever jovial, deviated not a wit from his happy disposition and met all with a smile and a good word. He was cognizant of the approaching end but had no fears. He looked at the receding day as calmly as he viewed the enemy on a battle field and when the last ray of light faded he wore the patient smile of one who was satisfied. His life was an open book. Human beings are not infallible but to Judge Hemphill the public will accord the jeweled crown of high inspiration and benevolent intentions. He was a man that asperity nor good fortune could not change. The deceased leaves a wife, four sons and two daughters; James C. and W. F. Hemphill of McDowell, H. M. Hemphill of Purdy and G. W. Hemphill near Cassville and Mrs. Rachael Bartmess of Golden and Mrs. Cordia Adair [should have been Mrs. Cordia Clark, Adair, OK] of Indian Territory. Four sisters, Margaret Bayless and Sarah Lowry of Purdy, Angeline Cates of Texas, Rachael Lyner of Tennessee and one brother, Taylor Hemphill of Wyoming survive him. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at four o'clock at Horner cemetery, Rev. Chappell in charge. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by, the request of the deceased just before he died. Judge Hemphill was a native of McMinn Co., Tenn., where he was born Aug. 30, 1844 to Thos. and Melvina Hemphill. In 1851 his parents moved to this county, locating in Dodge Hollow, his father dying in 1855. I have done much traveling since entering the service. Have gone through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I am now at Camp Merritt, N. J. This is a very nice place. I went over to New York last night. It is certainly a large city. I have also visited Washington D.C. I have sure had a chance to see lots since I left home. I do not know yet when I will get to come home. I was on the "pond" one night. I cannot answer all the letters I have received but I was awfully glad to receive them. I now weigh 230 pounds, including my pack and all. We walked five miles when we marched to the "pond" and carried three blankets, half a tent, some tent pegs, pole, ax, one pair of extra shoes, mess kit, overcoat, raincoat and I do not know what else. I am glad you folks have moved to Roaring river. Think I would like it there myself on account of the good water. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Osman (Doc) Henbest of Cassville. He spent Christmas here with his parents. He was married in December while stationed at Camp Robinson, Ark., and his wife accompanied him here for the visit. He was called while here to go to Ft. Meade, Md., and from there went across almost immediately. His parents had a letter from him a few days ago dated Jan. 22, stating that he was in France and was "all right". Pvt. Henry Henbest was 22 years old. He was inducted into the service last August and was trained at Camp Robinson, Ark. Research Note: Adella, daughter of Willie and Mabel (Webb) Gowen, was proclaimed by the doctor to be the prettiest baby he had ever seen. She was a lifetime resident of Barry County, and attended school in Washburn where she was the Salutatorian of the 1951 graduating class. Following graduation, Adella went to work in Cassville for Royle Ellis as a legal secretary. Adella married Bill Horner on May 16, 1953, at her parents' home in Washburn. They were married 64 years before Bill passed away on March 6, 2017. In addition to working for Mr. Ellis, Adella assisted Bill with running his business, Horner Oil. They operated their oil business until Bill's passing; Horner Oil was in business for over 70 years. In 1965, he and Adella purchased the Homelite Chainsaw business and operated it in conjunction with their oil business; they ceased the chainsaw business in 2000. Family and friends were the other glue in Adella's life. She loved being with her family from the Gowen, Webb, and Horner wings of her life. In addition, her days were filled with calls and conversations with beloved friends, and she loved outings with her circle of friends and family. Adella was an incredible cook; her Lala chicken and chocolate sheet cake were legendary. Because Adella and Bill were lifelong Barry County residents, they had the opportunity to share their life story in the summer of 2011 with the Barry County Museum; their story was published in Volume 19 of "Lifetimes of Memories, Voices of Barry County." Adella was a 70-year-member of the Cassville United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir for many decades, was a devout member of the Loyal Lydia's Circle, helped with church dinners and snacks for the Pathways Program, served on the Administrative Board, and helped coordinate funeral dinners. Simply put, Adella always loved the Cassville United Methodist Church, its pastors, and her church family. Adella was also a lifelong, proud Democrat. Survivors include two sons; five grandchildren; one step-grandson; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law. Bert Horner of Cassville, MO was the informant. - August 28, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Amos Horner for years a well known and highly esteemed citizen of this community died early Monday morning, Aug. 25, at his home about 2 miles southeast of Cassville after an illness of several weeks of general debility, aged 75 years, 8 months, and 8 days. For some time he had been on a general decline but was not confined to his bed until a few days prior to his death. Up to a short time ago he was able to occasionally come to town and spend a few hours with friends. A few days ago he became worse and within a short time his illness warranted the end to the members of the family, neighbors, and friends. Amos Horner was born in Perry County, Tennessee, December 17, 1837. That state was his home until thirteen years of age when he came with his parents to Missouri and settled in Newton county. After a year's residence in that county the family moved to near Cassville to what is known as the Horner Spring. His parents, Isaac and Mary Horner, were natives of Tennessee and were the parents of twelve children. They were Nancy Shewmake, Betsy Brook, Serena Neeley, Sally Brook, Anna McCary, Mary Mitchell, Martha Curry, Caroline Sicks, Josephine Farwell, Garet (Jarrett), Russell, and Amos Horner. Only two children of this family are living. They are Mrs. Sicks of Colorado and Mrs. Neely of California. In 1878, Mr. Horner was married to Martha Jane Smith who survives. Nine children were born to this union, seven of whom are yet living. They are Bert Horner of Cassville, Mrs. James Talbert of California, Oliver, Mrs. E. K. Horine, Russell, Lucene and Loren all of Cassville. Mr. Horner was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union army in 1863 in Company E, Second Arkansas Cavalry and served until he was honorably discharged at the end of the war. With the exception of a few years in the latter part of his life he resided on the farm his parents homesteaded when they came to this county. During all this time he had the esteem and confidence of everyone who knew him. Early in life he professed faith in Christ and his character of citizenship was always for the advancement of his community in influences for good. He was very much devoted to his family, his home and to the general progress of the community in which he lived. In his death this community and county has lost one of its long life citizens, his wife a loving companion and his children an affectionate father. Funeral service were conducted by Rev. John Elkins at the family home Monday afternoon in the presence of a good number of neighbors and friends and interment made at the Horner Cemetery. - Goodspeed's History: Amos Horner, an enterprising and prosperous farmer of Barry Co., residing three miles northeast of Cassville, was born in Perry Co., TN, in 1837, and when thirteen years of age came with his parents to MO. His father, Isaac Horner, was a native of TN, born Feb. 10, 1807, and was a farmer by vocation. He resided in his native state until 1852, when he removed to Newton Co., MO, coming to Barry Co. the following year. He settled on the farm now owned by his son, Amos, and at the time of his death, on Jan. 24, 1859, was the owner of 520 acres. His wife, Mary Moore, was born in White Co., TN, Nov. 16, 1809, and died on May 15, 1878. They were the parents of twelve children, six of whom are living, viz: Nancy (wife of Thomas Shoemaker, of Newton Co., MO), Betsy, (wife of John Brock, of Barry Co., MO), Anna, (wife of Asbury McCary, of Barry Co., MO), Amos, Serena, (Mrs. William Neely) and Caroline (Mrs. William Sicks, of CO). Amos grew to manhood on a farm, making his home with his parents as long as they lived. His marriage with Martha Jane Smith was celebrated in 1878. She is a daughter of Samuel Smith, and was born in Benton Co., AR, in 1857. To their union have been born six children: Isaac Elbert, Adar, William Oliver, Clara, Cleveland and an infant daughter, Festus Omega. Mr. Horner has passed the greater portion of his life in the neighborhood which is his present home, now owning 300 acres of the old homestead. He also has 160 acres in another portion of the township. In politics he has been a life long Democrat, having cast his first vote for John C. Breckenridge in 1860. During the war he espoused the cause of the Union, and in 1863 enlisted in Co. E, Second AR Cav., with which he served until hostilities ceased, receiving his discharge in TN. Research Note: He was the son of Amos Joseph and Montez (Brixey) Horner. On March 2, 1952, in Cassville, he was united in marriage to Ella Paulina Pitts, who preceded him in death on January 15, 2010. Also preceding him in death were his parents and a son-in-law, Jim Haak. Glennon grew up and received his education in Cassville, graduating from Cassville High School. He then furthered his education graduating from Southern Missouri State University, University of Arkansas and in 1957, was a graduate of the first graduating class of the University of Missouri, Medical School in Columbia, Missouri. In 1969, he graduated from the Anesthesia Program at MU. He moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, working as an anesthesiologist and then worked at St. Mary's in Rogers, Arkansas. He did over 35,000 solo anesthesia cases in his career. While in the United States Air Force, he took a two-year deferment to do his residency. He was a prolific storyteller. His grandfather, Hugh Brixey, was Park Superintendent of Roaring River State Park, where Glennon spent many of his summers, honing his fishing skills, teaching tourists how to fish. Death was caused by the growth of a tumor on the brain. For some time the deceased had been in poor health but not until the past few months was he bothered with the trouble to which he finally succumbed. Bert, as he was familiarly known, was born Sept. 8, 1879, and the son of the late Amos Horner and Mrs. Martha J. Horner. In 1902, he was married to Dollie Sands. To this union were born five children, all living. He also leaves a mother, two sisters and four brothers. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. John Elkins at the Horner Baptist church, Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the presence of large crowd of neighbors and friends. Interment was made in the Horner Cemetery. In his death the county and his home vicinity loses a good citizen. He was a man of strong Christian faith and was held in high esteem by his acquaintances. Stricken down in his prime of life, when ambition is at its zenith, to be devoted to his family and the service to his community, brings grief to the family and friends. He was a physician. - Son of Spencer Pleasant Horner and Permelia Turner. He first married Susannah Boen and second Mary Gilliam. - A family history was told in 1942 by Professor John Turner Horner, to Eva Horner, his daughter, about Dr. John Turner Horner of Cassville, Missouri: As the story goes John wanted to marry a poor girl but his father, Spencer, wanted him to marry a girl with more wealth, Susannah Boen (maybe Bowen). On one occasion, John had stopped to visit with Susannah Boen. Spencer happened by and took John's horse, insuring a lengthy visit with Susannah. He married (1) Susannah "Susan" Boen 1846 in Johnson County, Arkansas. She was born Mar. 9, 1829 in Perry County, Tennessee, and died Apr. 10, 1913 in Cato, Barry County, Missouri, the daughter of Lewis Boen and Mary Hodge of Ozark, Johnson County, Arkansas. Their marriage was not a happy one. One day, and six children later, he came home and she hit him over the head with a broomstick. He left and never came back. It was during these early years of marriage that John was away a lot of the time in his medical training. He received primary and secondary education in Arkansas and taught school. When he was 21 he began his studies in medicine. His preceptor was Dr. Forley of Clarksville, Arkansas. He moved to Webster County, Missouri with his parents but they returned to Johnson County by 1860. In 1860 he entered the medical college in New Orleans for two years. He married (2) Mary Gilliam, the daughter of Dow and Celia Gilliam, about 1865 in Webster County, Missouri. She had previously married Francis Marion Dunlap before 1865. It is believed that he died in the Civil War leaving her to care for two small children. She was born December 20, 1844 in Arkansas and died December 9, 1929 in Cassville, Barry County, Missouri. John and Mary met on the wagon train from Johnson County, Arkansas to Webster County, Missouri in 1864. They remained in Webster County for several years before John set up a allopath medical practice in Cassville, Barry County, Missouri in 1866. He was licensed to practice in Missouri in 1884. She and John are buried in Cassville Cemetery, Cassville, Barry County, Missouri. His dad (Spencer Horner) was a slave owner, but he was a Union man. When war came up all his boys joined the Union Army except Dad (Dr. John Turner Horner). The Confederates conscripted him, so he was on one side, and his three brothers were on the other side. His (Dr. John Turner Horner) younger brother was Will. He (John Turner Horner) managed to get away, slipped out on them and joined the Union Army. Dad (Dr. John Turner Horner) and his brother got a furlough to go home to visit their folks. He would dodge around through the mountains to go to the house at night, etc. Dad (Dr. John Turner Horner) said his horse needed shoeing and he had to go out on the mountain 5 miles to get it shod. He told his brother, Will, and his father Spencer Horner that whatever they did, never go to the house in the daytime. But the mother (Permelia Turner Horner) was killing a chicken so the father Spencer Horner and Will went to the house. Wasn't long till about 20 rebels came riding up. Grandfather (Spencer Horner) went out into the potato patch and said, 'I surrender!' and they shot him down. Will ran through the lot and up on the mountain side and was shot in the head. He lived several days in a cave. Dad (Dr. John Turner Horner) had a squad of men, including Wash Middleton and Fate Arnold, desperate men, to go back into the hills and clean out that bunch. They killed 17 out of the 20 bushwhackers. Dr. John Turner Horner knew that after he was conscripted and deserted the Rebel Army, if he ever became a prisoner, they'd shoot him. That's why he never got on the Union Army record. He was either afraid, or too careless to get an honorable discharge. Dad's (Dr. John Turner Horner) squad was equal in number to the other squads. One day they met in a corn field and each man picked out his man. Dad picked out the leader; couldn't shoot him, threw his pistol at him. They caught one man walking between his wife and his mother. Wash Middleton shot him down. One night they surrounded a house where the bushwhackers were having a dance. Wash Middleton took the man who killed grandfather (Spencer Horner) by the hair and dragged him out, 'Now you'll kill a helpless old man' and killed him. Father (Dr. John Turner Horner) helped to take a refugee train of Union people out of Clarksville, Arkansas, to Marshfield, Webster County, Missouri. That was where dad met mother (Mary Gillian Dunlap) and her two girls, in that refugee train. Fate Arnold would volunteer to go through 20 miles of Rebel lines to get ammunition, and he'd always come back. Once he jerked his horse's head up, and the horse got shot in the head. Arnold got wounded. He stayed with my father (Dr. John Turner Horner) in Marshfield, Missouri until he got well. Mother (Mary Gillian Dunlap) said there'd be a pool of blood under his chair. Horner, a physician, surgeon and accoucheur, of Cassville, MO, was born in Perryville, TN, in 1831, and is a son of Spencer and Permelia (Turner) Horner. The father was of Irish and Cherokee Indian descent, and was born in VA, 1808. He was a farmer by vocation, and was married in his native State. His wife was born in VA in 1815, and is yet living. After his marriage he removed to SC, and afterward ton GA, thence to TN. In 1836 he removed to AR, and in 1855 to Barry Co., MO. The next year he returned to AR, locating in Johnson Co. In Sept. 1864, he was murdered on his farm by bushwhackers for his money. His son, William R., was murdered the same day on Mulberry Creek in the county. To Spencer Horner and wife were born eleven children, five of whom are living. Dr. John T. Horner received his literary education in AR, and taught school in his younger days. When twenty one years of age he began the study of his chosen profession, his preceptor being Dr. Forley of Clarksville, AR. In 1860 he entered a medical college in New Orleans, and attended two terms. In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in the Federal army as a member of Co. K, Second Reg. of AR Infantry, In 1863 he was promoted to second Lt. and served until Feb. 1864, when he resigned and escorted a refugee train into MO. He was in the engagement near Camden, and was in many severe skirmishes. He also did some surgical work while in the army. In 1866 he located in Cassville, and commenced the practice of his profession, and he has been one of the leading doctors of the county for the last 22 years. He is a charter member of the Barry Co. Medical Asso. In 1851 he married Susan Boen, a native of Perry Co., TN, and to them were born five children: Louis, Mary (Mrs. Jesse Wilson), Spencer, Isabel (Mrs. George Wilson) and Russell C. In 1865 Dr. Horner married Mary Dunlap, who was born in AL in 1846. To this union have been born six children: John T., Martha, Ollie, Willie, Zora and Nellie. I am getting along fine. We have moved since I wrote you before. We are about a hundred miles from where we were. It is a nice camp here but it is not as good as the other camp. There is no town of any size near here. We were right in town at the other camp. I ran onto Vern Joslin here at this camp. He has been here ever since he came to France. He runs a motorcycle for the officers. I guess we will get our wagons and everything we need in a few days. We are drilling a little every day now. This part of France is different from any that I have yet seen. It is hilly here, something like the Ozark country. All the country I had seen here before this was smooth country. They do not have any large farms here, all are small patches, about an acre in a field. They cut their hay and grain with a sickle and rake it by hand. They have ox carts and work two oxen to two wheel carts. They work the yoke on the horns instead of on the shoulders. They also work dogs to carts. When they work more than one horse to plows they do not work them side by side but put one in front of the other. They do not drive the horses but have someone lead the front horse. The farmers build their houses and their barns under the same enclosure. They live in one room and have their cows and horse in the other room. The poorer class live most any way but the better to do class are nice and live well. They live in fine houses and dress well. They use small trains in France. They look like toys in comparison with the trains used in the United States. We soldiers get to ride most of the time in box cars. We just crowd in like so many cattle. It does not take long to go across France. They have the Y. M. C. A. headquarters over here, better ones than they have at the home camps. I do not know what the soldiers would do were it not for the Y. M. C. A. They have church on Sunday and during the week picture shows and entertainment for us. There are a number of American girls working at the headquarters. I would like to send you some picture views of this country but I can't send them. I have been to some of those old castles you have heard so much about where the old lords of the estates used to live. They are great sights. I saw one that they claim is over 1,800 years old. She was born on June 13, 1913, in Stotts City, MO, to Horace and Maggie (Barnes) Duke. Mary was united in marriage to Richard H. Horner on August 16, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, MO. She was a wonderful homemaker and worked as an elementary school cook. Preceding her in death were: her parents; and her husband, Richard Horner in 2004 after 69 years of marriage. Survivors include: her daughter of Walnut Grove, MO; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2009, in the Greenfield Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bob Dodson officiating. She has been an active member of the community. She worked as church secretary for the First Baptist Church and as secretary for the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce before becoming the first editor of the Barry County Advertiser in 1966. She was editor of the Barry County Advertiser for over 25 years until her retirement. She also held past positions on the Barry County Extension Council and later on the Cassville R-IV School Board. More recently she worked part-time at the Barry County Library and was a member of the volunteer program at the Barry County Museum. He was born on May 26, 1920, in Cassville, and was a son of William O. and Ethel (Henbest) Horner. He married Fredalene Cooper on Sept. 15, 1954, in Cassville, Missouri. He grew up in the Horner Community and graduated from Cassville High School in 1938. Following his graduation he moved to Glendale, Calif., and worked at Lockheed Aircraft before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served at the naval base in Norman, Okla., during World War II. Upon his return to Cassville he started milking and operated his dairy farm until his retirement. He was the sexton of the Horner Cemetery.
