She had apparently been enjoying good health but when she started to retire on Saturday, on week previous to her passing, she was suddenly stricken with a severe pain in her head. Medical aid was summoned and for a time it was thought she was improving but she passed on peacefully one week after she suffered the stroke. Mary Jane Chappell was 79 years, 8 months and 18 days old and was born in Randolph county Illinois, January 11, 1850. On November 9th, 1865 she was married to Edward Chappell, old time and highly respected citizen of this section who preceded her in death several years ago. After their marriage, they moved from their native state of Kansas where they lived for years, moving from there to this county where they had resided ever since, living at Mano, where their estimable family was born and raised and later moving to Cassville where they have since resided. Seven children were born to this marriage who are: Jesse, John, Mrs. Wm Holman and Mrs. Russ Cassity of Cassville, Ben of Washburn, Erskine of Miami, Okla., and Mrs. Sherman Burton of Parma, Idaho all of whom are the county's very best citizenship and honorable citizens. Funeral services were conducted at the Horner church, near Cassville, Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Melvin Henson of Purdy, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place, beside her husband, under direction of Horine’s Funeral Service. A quartet composed of Mrs. John Ray, Mrs. Will Lathim, Calvin Henderson and Floyd Inman, rendered selected music at the services. Many beautiful floral offerings were received by the family from their many friends and a large number attended the services. Mrs. Chappell was an excellent mother and neighbor and during her lifetime had done much to relieve suffering humanity. She always responded to calls from sick neighbors and her life was such that it will be long remembered and cherished. She was one of the county's honorable citizens, was a consistent member of the Baptist church and always took an active part in church affairs. She was loved by all who knew her and her every day walks in life were such that they will long be remembered as splendid ones to follow. The Democrat joins their many friends in extending sincere sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement. | Death Certificate Online Obit Online Newspapers Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |

SSW: Bess - Research Note: He was the Co. School Supt. Son of Winford A. Cox and Columbia Wallen. Bess Mulkey was his wife. Mrs. Bess Cox of Cassville, Barry Co., MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Democrat, July 12, 1950 - Superintendent Dies As a Result of Heart Attack Suffered Short Time Before; Had Not Been Feeling Very well lately - Buel Cox died this morning. That was the sad news that was passed about Cassville and Barry County Friday morning to tell of the passing of one of the county's most popular and loved citizens. Death was from a heart attack suffered at 5:10 and brought an end to his life shortly after 7 o'clock. Mr. Cox was born near Cassville on March 24, 1901, and spent his entire life in this community to endear him to all who knew him. He was converted early in life and with his devoted wife united with the Cassville Baptist Church in 1935. He began teaching a newly organized class of young men in the Sunday school in 1948. He was married to Bess Mulkey on June 7, 1935. To this union was born a daughter, Carolyn Sue. Mr. Cox finished Cassville High School in 1920 and after graduated form Southwest Teachers College in 1930. He began his teaching career in the rural schools of Barry County, where he invested five or six years of his life. He was superintendent at Butterfield four years and Exeter two years, and for nine years served as principal of the Cassville High School and athletic coach. He produced some of the outstanding ball teams of Southwest Missouri. He was serving his second term as county superintendent of schools. He was active in all school organizations, a member of the Missouri State Education Association and the National Education Association. For a number of years he was a member of the executive board of the Southwest District of the Missouri State Teachers Association, and also served as vice president of that organization. Superintendent Cox literally spent his life in the teaching and educational profession, influencing the lives of the youth of this section, and through them reaching out into wider areas of activity. Mr. Cox was a clean upright, kindly Christian citizen, who thought not forward, was always willing to assume responsibility. He was a friend to everyone, a devoted husband, loving father, dutiful son and cherished brother. He had been feeling badly the last few weeks and made an effort to determine his trouble, but did not suspect the seriousness of it. He passed away at his home in Cassville July 7, at 7:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his mother on February 4, 1941. Surviving are his wife, Bess, the daughter, Carolyn Sue; his father, W. A. Cox, two sisters, Miss Pauline Cox and Mrs. Jack Gibbons, and one brother, Hollis Cox of Cassville. His life was not a lengthy one, but it was most useful one and he will be sorely missed, not only by his loved ones, also by his church, his community and his co-workers in his lifelong profession. Funeral services were held at the Cassville Baptist Church Sunday, July 9, 1950, at 2:30, with the Rev. O. V. Dodson officiating assisted by the Rev. C. F. Siler. | Death Certificate Online Obit Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |

COX, Daniel Leroy | Jan. 28, 1851 Barry Co., MO |
Nov. 28, 1919 Barry Co., MO |
SSW: M. A. - Research Note: He was a son of James and Martha A. (Moore) Cox. He married Melissa Ann Morgan. - Cassville Republican, Dec. 4, 1919 - D. L. Cox died very suddenly at his home in this city Friday morning November 28, of neuralgia of the heart, at the age of 68 years 10 months and 1 day. About ten days before his death he had a severe attack of neuralgia of the heart but had been apparently getting along very well for a few days just before his death. Friday morning he ate his breakfast and spoke freely of how much better he was feeling and how well the had rested through the night. About nine o'clock he received a sudden attack and passed away immediately. Daniel Leroy Cox was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Cox who came to this county in 1851 and located first on what was for many years been known as the Bowman or Pharis old farm up the valley southeast of Cassville three-fourths of a mile. Here D. L. was born January 28, 1851. Later the family located on the farm known as the Chris Ireland place where the Henry Beck store is now located on the Cassville and Rock creek road. All of his life, except a short time at Joplin, was spent in the community of Cassville. He was married to Malissa A. Morgan in 1874. To them seven children were born, two sons and five daughters, of whom one son, W. A. Cox, east of Cassville, and three daughters are living. The daughters are Mrs. Lula Edmondson, wife of Ben Edmondson, Mrs. Ada Edmondson, wife of Doss Edmondson of Seneca, and Miss Lena at home. Several months ago Mr. Cox had an accident in which he sustained a broken leg. He then sold his farm east of Cassville and moved to his Cassville residence property where he and wife and daughter, Lena were living at the time of his death. When yet in his teens he was converted and united with the Baptist church of which he was a devoted member and for which he was always glad to make any reasonable sacrifice. He was a quiet unassuming man but always looked upon as one of the community's substantial, upright and most highly respected citizens who aspired to set a good example of a righteous life before his children and neighbors. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Horner Baptist church and his body laid to rest in the cemetery near by. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin who stated that to be the seventh funeral he had conducted for the Morgan and Cox families. | Note Donna Cooper Online Newspapers Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |

CURRY, Martha (HORNER) | June 7, 1848 | Jan. 19, 1882 | Inscription: "Wife of B. F. Curry - Gone But Not Forgotten" - Research Note: B. F. Curry married Martha Horner on Jan. 28, 1870 in Barry Co., MO. Daughter of Isaac Horner and Mary Ellen Moore. - Online obit for husband B. F. "Frank" - A Good Citizen Dead: As the day was fading away, and the darkness of night approaching, the spirit of Franklin Curry took its flight, on evening of July 6th, 1907, at his home near Eagle Rock, surrounded by loving relatives and friends. A man had to know Frank Curry to appreciate his worth as a man. Barry County has lost a splendid citizen, whose every act was honorable. Honesty was his guiding star in all his life's acts. His children can point with pride and love, to his life as a father and citizen. His children are all reputable citizens and have gone out in the world with the splendid principles taught them by a loving father. B. F. Curry was born in Newton County, MO, Dec. 22, 1837. Died July 6th, 1907, aged 69 years, 6 months, and 13 days. His father married the widow Brown and moved to Barry County when Frank was seven years old, settling on the old Curry farm on White River, where Frank grew to manhood and has been a resident of Barry County, continuously since, and a resident of Roaring River township except two years from 73 to 77 when he resided on Amos Horner's farm near Cassville. He enlisted Sept. 15, 1863, in Co. E, 2nd, Regiment Arkansas Cavalry Volunteers. Was discharged on account of disability, May 30, 1865, returned to the old home devastated by the ravages of war, with his step-mother and three half-brothers; his father, two own brothers and one sister died during the war. He married Martha Horner, Jan. 19, 1870, to whom, was born five children, Wm, living in Idaho, Charles near Eagle Rock, Albert and Robert in Nebraska and Mary wife of Geo. Skelton of Eagle Rock. His wife died Jan. 19, 1882 and he was married to Martha Skelton November 9, 1883 to whom was born two children, Josephine, wife of Finis Easley and Christopher who died Nov. 6, 1887. He had one half brother who went west in '85 and has never been heard of; no ones knows whether he is dead or alive. Frank Curry was a man who attended to his own business, has not an enemy, and was one of the best of citizens, a man of strict integrity, who considered his word as the bond, who would allow himself to owe no man a cent and who expected others to be honest, but was not over-exciting to a debtor. He has been afflicted for several years and has bore his sufferings with fortitude. He had been in bed for the last two weeks and his sufferings seemed almost endurable and he knew that the end was near; he only wished for it to hastened. His affliction was Bright's disease. He was buried at the Munsey Cemetery, on the 7th, and there were lots of people present, a long procession of wagons and other vehicles following from the house to the grave. Isaac Brock conducted funeral services. | Online Obit MO Marriage Records Census Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |

DYE, Harrison | Apr. 9, 1823 Morgan Co., OH |
Sept. 10, 1901 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Harrison Dye, son of James Dye and Barbara (Livengood) Dye. Sometime around 1831 and 1832, Harrison, being about 9 years old at this time, moved with his family from Ohio into Illinois. The family was living in McDonough Co. on the 1840 census. Harrison would have been about 18 years old at this time. He moved out on his own and got married Aug. 25, 1842 to Nancy Roberts to which one child was born (Jesse William Dye). Based on census information there is no Jesse Dye on the 1850 census so assuming he died young. In 1848, Harrison filed for divorce on grounds of desertion. A week after his divorce was granted (Oct. 8, 1850) he married Sarah Pope who was a widow with 4 children of her own. The 1850 census shows Harrison living with his brother James Dye (Jr.) family and right next door to his future wife Sarah Pope and her children. I'm not sure when or how they met but guessing it's through a mutual connection of the Pope family. Harrison and Sarah haven't been found on an 1860 census but my assumption is this would be the time frame of their moving from Illinois into Missouri. At the start of the Civil War in April of 1861, Harrison would have been 39 years old. I'm not sure of eligibility requirements for joining the War, but I can find no records of him enlisting on either side. They moved south into Missouri by 1870 showing up on the Cass Co. census living just south of Harrisonville, Mo. They lived there as late as 1874 based of personal property tax records and by 1880 they had moved south into Barton Co. That is, everyone except Harrison, who has disappeared again. Sarah can be found living in Doylesport but her marriage status shows that she is divorced at this time. Harrison showed up again in Barry Co. Mo. and was living in Cassville on the 1900 census just prior to his death at the age of 79. He is buried southeast of Cassville in the Horner Cemetery. He is the only Dye buried there. - He may have married a third time to Susan Jane Haney on Oct. 1, 1892 in Newton Co., MO. | Note Greg Dye MO Marriage Records Phyllis Long Photo Darla Marbut |
