During the war, the slaves supposedly hid the silverware, supplies, etc., in a cave on their land and would bring to the house only what was needed at the time. He built a two-story house with four or five rooms upstairs and seven or eight downstairs. The downstairs had a big parlor, huge fireplace with cooking pots in the living room, two bedrooms, dining room, kitchen and store house. The first house he built blew away in a tornado. A lamp, which had been upstairs, was found in the basement under the lumber, etc., but the lamp chimney was not even broken. He rebuilt the house but it burned down before it was finished. Jessie Jane (Overton) (Richardson) Duncan writes, "Robert C. Overton was of English, Irish and Welch descent. He was a Christian man, a steward in the South Methodist Church at Oak Grove. He was Presiding Judge of Barry County, Missouri, a school teacher, a farmer, and a member of the Masonic Lodge." | Notes MO Marriage Records Phyllis Long Headstone Roger Longley - Deceased Photo Ralph and Betty Lamberson |
