James and Carolyn (Barrett) (James) Skinner. In 1988, in Cassville, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Shannon Bruton. Preceding her in death were her maternal grandmother, Lorretta Barrett; paternal grandfather, Elmer James; a nephew, Dusty Hodge and an uncle, Donnie Quinn. Lisa moved from Chandler, Oklahoma in 1983 and attended Cassville School, where she graduated from high school. She received her LPN license through Franklin Technical Nursing School in Joplin, Missouri. For several years she was an LPN at Barry County Care Center in Cassville. KEELING, Harriet Angeline (OVERTON)	July 24, 1868 Barry Co., MO	May 30, 1939 Rural Wheaton, Barry Co., MO	SSW: Samuel A. - Research Note: Daughter of R. C. Overton born TN and Amanda Pace born GA. Samuel A. Keeling, her husband, was the informant on the death certificate. Dates on the DC are July 24, 1869 and died May 31, 1939. These dates also agree with the obit. - Wheaton Journal, June 8, 1939 - Angie (Overton) Keeling, daughter of R. C. and Amanda Overton, was born July 24, 1869 at the old Overton homestead near Wheaton, Mo., where she was residing at the time of her death. She departed this life May 31, 1939, at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 7 days. She was united in marriage to Samuel A. Keeling in June 1892. To this union was born five children. Two of them, Robert and Emmer, proceeded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing her devoted husband, three children, Mrs. Gladys Tarvin and Byron Keeling of Shoal Creek Community and Mrs. Imogene Plaster of Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren; three brothers, Dr. B. F. Overton of Mexia, Texas, R. C. Overton, Adair, Okla., Grover Overton, Muskogee, Okla.; two sisters Mrs. Lillie Hawks of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Jessie Richardson of Wheaton, Mo., many other relatives and a host of friends. Eleven brothers and sister have preceded her in death. She was converted in early life and united with the Methodist Church but later was one of the charter members of the Free Will Baptist Church of Okla. Union of which she remained a faithful member until her death. Mrs. Keeling’s life was one of great influence for good. The spirit to do good and help her neighbors was always shown. Her death takes from this community one of the finest characters among us. We have felt her comforting spirit and enjoyed her loyal hospitality. From her heart, she radiated the influence of a vivid personality. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, June 2, at the Okla. Union Church by Elder Kenneth Turner and Elder T. Farmer of Granby, Mo., and the remains were laid to rest in the family cemetery, under the direction of the Koon funeral service. - Harriet A. Overton, age 22, married Samuel A. B. M. Keeling of rural Purdy, MO was the informant. - His mother was Sarah Louisa Dabbs and both she and husband George are buried at Concord Cemetery. - Wheaton Journal, Feb. 27, 1947 - Samuel A. Keeling was born Feb. 10, 1869 in Wayne County, Tenn., moving to Barry County with his family when about six years old and residing here until his death, Friday, Feb. 14 1947. He and Angie Overton were united in marriage in June 1892 and were the parents of five children. His wife and two children, Robert and Emma, preceded him in death. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Hall of Fresno, Calif., and Mrs. Imogene Buchanan of Tulsa; one son, Byron Keeling of Wheaton; one brother, Brown Keeling of Wheaton; seven grand children and numerous other relatives. He was converted at an early age and was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he was making his home place near Wheaton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Wheaton Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Turner of Monett officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet. Burial was in the Okla. She was born near Wheaton, MO on Aug. 16, 1889. She was 52 years, 7 months and 24 days of age. She had been afflicted for a number of years. She was a daughter of Alec and Ruth Overton. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 14, and united with the Baptist Church. She was united in marriage to Grover E. Overton on Jan. 5, 1908. To this union one son, Robert Cecil, was born. She is survived by her husband and one son and one grandchild, Barbara Ellen Overton of Kansas City; one sister, Mrs. Pearl Garrison of Purdy; two brothers, Lee Howerton of San Diego, CA, Fred Howerton, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Wheaton Baptist church on Sunday afternoon Apr. 12, 1942 by Rev. Charles Vanzandt, assisted by Rev. J. W. Bain. Burial was in the OK Union Cemetery. Pall bearers were Hubert Garrison, Kenneth Garrison, Corum Howerton, Joe McNeill, Aubry Howerton, and Bryan Keeling. - Census records indicate that she was the daughter of John Alexander Howerton and Mary Ann Stephens. He married Elizabeth A. Pace on Nov. 17, 1851 in Rusk Co., TX. Son of Jesse Overton and Susanna Alexander. - February 7, 1918, Cassville Republican - Dr. A. A. Overton Dead - Dr. A. A. Overton passed away Friday, Feb. 1, at his home on Shoal Creek at the age of 86 years. His death was a result of paralysis and old age. He has been quite feeble for sometime. A stroke of paralysis about three weeks before his death proved too much for his advanced age. He leaves a widow and eight children, two daughters and six sons. He was the father of Dr. R. C. Overton" - Research Note: Marriage license reads that he married Louisa Emma Lecompte. - Goodspeed's 1888 History - Dr. D. C. Overton, a physician of Barry Co., MO, was born in Texas in Nov. 1852. He is the oldest child of Robert C. and Amanda (Pace) Overton, natives of TN and GA, respectively. R. C. Overton was born in 1832, and is now residing in Barry Co., MO, engaged in farming. When a young man he went to TX, where he married, coming to Barry Co. when the subject of this sketch was 14 years old. His wife was born in 1837. They are the parents of 12 children, 10 of whom are living. Dr. D. C. Overton attended the common schools of Barry Co. and Clark's Academy at Berryville, AR, graduating from the latter in 1871. Returning home he studied medicine privately for 2 years, after which he entered the University of Nashville, in which he completed his literary education. He next entered the Nashville University of Medicine, from which he received the degree of M. D. in 1874. He then entered the Vanderbilt University of Medicine at Nashville, from which he also took the degree of M. D. in 1875, at which time the first course of lectures delivered in this institution was completed. After having thus finished his professional education, he returned to his home in Barry Co. and practiced medicine for 2 years. April 8, 1877, Dr. Overton was united in marriage with Louiza Emma Lecompte, who was born in Macon Co., MO in 1857 and who is of French origin. He then went to TX, remaining in the eastern part of that State, and practiced his profession for 6 years, when he came back to Barry Co. To our subject have been born 4 children, 2 deceased, unnamed, and 2 living, Arabel and Rollin. Politically Dr. Overton is a Democrat. The family inclination seems to tend toward the medical profession, the subject having 2 brothers and 3 uncles who are physicians. OVERTON, Robert Carter	Jan. 13, 1827 TN	Mar. 4, 1893	Research Note: Son of Jesse Overton and Susanna Alexander. First wife was Amanda Pace, married on Jan. 1, 1852 in Smith Co., TX. Second wife was Sarah E. Rodgers married on July 4, 1878 in Barry Co., MO. According to publication "Rusk County Rebels,"Robert C. Overton enlisted in Captain John D. Hamilton's Company D, 14th Texas Volunteer Calvary, which was organized in November, 1861 as the "Rusk Avengers." Abdon Alexander Independence Overton and Robert Carter Overton were in Ectors Brigade, Hood Division, according to Southern Historical Society Papers, XXII page 244. - Family notes from ancestry.com - Edith (Overton) Watters, granddaughter of Robert Carter Overton, recalls the following family legend (whether true or not): Robert Carter Overton came from Texas to Missouri during the Civil War to get away from his slaves, but they followed him. During the war, the slaves supposedly hid the silverware, supplies, etc., in a cave on their land and would bring to the house only what was needed at the time. He built a two-story house with four or five rooms upstairs and seven or eight downstairs. The downstairs had a big parlor, huge fireplace with cooking pots in the living room, two bedrooms, dining room, kitchen and store house. The first house he built blew away in a tornado. A lamp, which had been upstairs, was found in the basement under the lumber, etc., but the lamp chimney was not even broken. He rebuilt the house but it burned down before it was finished. Jessie Jane (Overton) (Richardson) Duncan writes, "Robert C. Overton was of English, Irish and Welch descent. He was a Christian man, a steward in the South Methodist Church at Oak Grove. He was Presiding Judge of Barry County, Missouri, a school teacher, a farmer, and a member of the Masonic Lodge."
