SSW: Anna B. Research Note: He was buried next to Anna B. Hilton. The land for the cemetery (Hilton cemetery) was donated by Enos Hilton, and the majority of the people buried there are direct descendants of the Hilton family. This is part of the biography about Enos in "History of Stone Co., Mo, Vol 1" by Stone Co Historical Society, page 474. Reverend Enos B. Hilton moved from Virginia to Missouri around 1840. His brother William also moved his family to Missouri around the same time. Enos settled in Barry County and William settled in Taney County. The Hilton Cemetery near Scholten, Missouri, gets its name because it was part of the old Enos Hilton farm. Enos passed away in November of 1884 and was buried on the farm which he loved so much. Enos and his sons, William, John Anderson, James, Matthew and Martin, were Federals during the Civil War. - He was the son of Samuel Hilton and Nancy Bird. He first married Susanna Burke about 1823 in Scott Co., VA. He second married Anna Bell Bailey on Oct. 13, 1833 in Scott Co., VA. Father of 13 children. - Another Photo Stone Co. History

SSW: Elizabeth - Research Note: His death certificate reads that his father was Enos Hilton and that his mother was Annie Bailie. Both of his parents were born in VA. He was age 80 years, 1 month and 24 days old and died on Nov. 4, 1914 and was buried on Nov. 5, 1914 and was signed by the doctor on Nov. 4th. The state has it indexed as the 8th. It does look like that until you read the rest and then you can see that it was listed as the 3rd and signed on the 4th. King Funeral Home Records listed his death date also to be Nov. 4, 1914 and that he died of nephritis at age 80 years, 1 month and 24 days. If the age given is correct, then he died on the 4th as the stone reports. - Cassville Republican, Nov. 12, 1914 - Leann News: Uncle Bill Hilton, an old citizen of Leann, died Wednesday of last week of Bright's disease and was buried at the Hilton cemetery near Scholten Thursday. A Pioneer Citizen Dead: William S. Hilton of near Scholten, who has resided in this county since 1841, died Wednesday of last week after a long illness. The deceased was born in Scott Co., Va., September 19, 1834. When seven years of age he came to Barry County with his parents who settled near Scholten. His father, Rev. Samuel Hilton, was one of the early Baptist ministers of this county. In 1848 he was married to Elizabeth Owens. To this union were born eleven children. He was the father of Lemon Hilton, a well known citizen who died a few months ago. He was a veteran of the Civil War, giving two years service to the cause of the union. He was a prominent stockman and farmer and was one of the county's most highly respected citizen. - William Samuel Hilton married May 5, 1858 to Elizabeth Owen. - Goodspeed's History: William S. Hilton, stockman and farmer, of Barry Co., MO, was born in Scott Co., VA, Sept. 10, 1834, son of Enos and Anna B. (Bailey) Hilton, who were born in the Old Dominion, the former in 1800. He was a son of Rev. Samuel and Nancy (Short) Hilton. Our subject's grandfather, Samuel Hilton, came from NC to VA. He was a tiller of the soil and a Baptist preacher, and his father's people lived in NC, his father's name being Charles Hilton. William S. Hilton's paternal great-grandmother was a Miss Bird, who first married a Mr. Short, and four or five children were the result of this union. Then she married a Mr. Greene, and by the latter gentleman became the mother of one son, Gen. James Greene. Our subject's father, Enos Hilton, was twice married; the first time to Susanna Burkes, who died in Mar. 1833, leaving five children: Mathew, Marion, James, John, Matilda (widow of John Stubblefield). Mathew died at the age of fifty years; John at the age of fifty-eight years. The other three are still living, and reside in Barry Co. His second marriage was with Miss Anna B. Bailey, and nine children were the result of this union, eight of whom grew to maturity, and seven are now living: William, Ellen (Peters), Mary J. (Hemphill), Nancy (Neill), Sarah B. (Boren), Enos F., Eliza and Newton. Eliza died at about the age of sixteen. The father and mother were active members of the Church of God. The father was a teacher of the divine law. He began preaching about 1835, and in the fall of 1841 he left VA and came to MO, and in 1842 he moved to the place where he died. He formerly belonged to the Baptists and then joined the Church of God, and preached until death. He died Nov. 27, 1884. William S. was about seven years old when he came to MO with his parents. He grew to manhood in Barry Co., and received little educational advantages, owing to the scarcity of schools at that day. He remained at home until twenty-four years of age, at which time he married and located near the old home place, where he lived until 1864, then came to his present location, which is a farm of 160 acres, with about ninety under cultivation. He served in the Federal army for nearly two years under Capt. Moore, but was discharged in the spring of 1864, owing to disability. Elizabeth (Owen) Hilton, his wife, was born in Clay Co., IN, in 1843 and is the mother of eleven children, ten living: Missouri (Mullin), Marion, Lemon, Mary Ann (Suttles), Alfred, M. Rhoda, Harmon, Presley, Nancy, Wiley, and Armindia. Nancy died at the age of three years. Mr. Hilton and wife were members of the Church of God, and he belongs to the Farmer's Alliance. - Another Photo Death Certificate
