SSW: Oma - Research Note: His death certificate listed his father as Harve Poe, born IN and his mother as Frances Gillespie, born IN, and his birth date is given as Aug. 3, 1895, and not April 25, 1895 as the stone reads. Oma Poe was given as his wife's name and she was the informant, giving her address as Washburn, MO. He was a laborer, running a sawmill. The cause of death was given as crushed in an accident, was run over by a motor vehicle. - Cassville Democrat, Oct. 11, 1945 - CLAUDE POE DIES FROM INJURIES; IS FOUND ON ROAD 37 - Orb McNabb Discovers Body After Running Over It: Thought to Have Ben Hurt Before. Claude Poe, 50 was found on the highway near the Hagood place, between Washburn and Seligman at 7:30 last Wednesday night Oct 4. He was rushed to the Barry County Hospital but died within an hour or so. Poe was discovered by Orb McNabb of near Ridgley after he had run over the body and stopped to see what caused it. McNabb was passing a truck at the time but the truck driver never knew of the circumstance. Poe's body showed there had been a clean cut on the head and a broken nose in addition to prints on the car having run over him to burst his liver and lung and break all ribs. The cut on his head indicated he must have been injured before being run over and an investigation has been made by Sgt. Harvey George of the State Highway Patrol along with Sheriff George Roden. No information has been found to throw further light on the injuries. It was thought he may have been riding in a truck and fallen out. Poe had poor eyesight and it is possible this may have had something to do with the accident. Poe had lived around Washburn and Seligman for the last 49 years and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harve Poe, who preceded him in death. He was married to Oma Pruitt of Washburn January 17, 1918. To this union were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy. Three grandchildren and three brothers and three sisters, James Poe, Cassville; William Poe, Jane; Early Poe Washburn; Mrs. J.W. Marshall, Gerald, Kan.; Mrs. D. J. Cline, Clovis Calif., and Mrs. S. L. Main, Jane, also survive. Funeral services were conducted at the O.K. Church Sunday by Rev. Charles VanZandt with burial in the Hickman Cemetery under the direction of the Koon Funeral Home. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, Dec. 19, 1918 - Washburn: Claud Poe met with a very painful accident last week while driving cattle through the brush he struck a stick in one of his eyes. His wife was given as Bernice Poe, Washburn, MO. He was age 25 years, 8 months and 27 days old, which makes the 1926 the correct date. His stone has May 13, 1925 and not 1926 and also for his death date, the stone reads Feb. 10, 1953, which is different from the way the death certificate reads. He was buried Feb. 12, 1952, so the 1952 date is the correct one, also it is the date of his obituary. - Wheaton Journal, February 14, 1952 - Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist Church, west of Washburn, for Wayne Poe, 26, who was burned to death about 1:15 o'clock Sunday morning. Services were conducted by Rev. Chas. VanZandt and burial was made in the Hickman Cemetery under direction of the Culver funeral home of Cassville. Poe lost his life in a fire which destroyed his one-room farm home, near Washburn. The dwelling, located in a wooded area, burned to the ground and not until the embers cooled was Coroner Paul Henbest able to extricate the body. There is only supposition as to the origin of the fire. There has been different stories in regard to the events leading up to the fatal fire, but one report is that Poe, his wife and two small children had attended a picture show Saturday night. Upon their return, the other members of this family stopped at the home of his mother, Mrs. Oma Poe, for the night and Poe went on to his cabin a short distance away. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Burnice Poe; his mother and two daughters Shirley Ann, 2 years old, and Joyce Darlene, 4 five brothers and one sister. WEATHERS, James Charles | Jan. 9, 1807 Gallatin, Sumner, TN |
July 7, 1896 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Martha Yarber was his wife. They married Jan. 20, 1827 in Sumner Co., TN. - Cassville Republican, Feb. 27, 1896 - Married a Life Time - James C. and Martha Wethers/Weathers - United for Nearly Three Score Years and Ten - Uncle Jimmy Wethers/Weathers may never reach the century mark, but one thing certain, he is running Death a strong race and his hale old wife is keeping well up. Their average age is 90 years, but on the 9th uit.? Mr. Wethers preached at 91 until October 15. Mrs. Wethers passed the 80th mile post in her journey. Though so aged, Mr. Wethers had never had a photograph taken and the THE REPUBLICAN wanted one. On the 10th the writer went to Ash Township, where Mr. Wethers lives with his son, Thos. B. and gained his consent to "sit" for a photograph. For the first time in two years he left the house and sat in the bright sunshine that our readers might know how the oldest couple in Barry County look. Mrs. Wethers was harder to find. Though making, her home at her son Allen's, the serious illness of a son of Mr. Anderson, over a half mile away, touched sympathies and the study old lady had walked there to render assistance. To see her walk about, one would doubt that had it been twice as far she would have walked it easily. The interesting couple are natives of Sumner County, Tennessee, where they were born Jan. 9, 1804 and Oct. 15, 1806, respectively, some twenty miles from Gallatin, on the Cumberland River. In 1820, they removed to Warrick Co., Ind., where they lived until May 10, 1843, when they started for the Sunny Southwest, arriving at Cassville June 22, 1843, at which time there was but one family here living in a log house. Cassville wasn't the county seat then, for court was held at Mt. Pleasant near Pierce City and Barry County was as large as some of the eastern states. The land was not sectionized in those days but Mr. Wethers bought where Washburn now is and followed his trade as a blacksmith. He made the first tuning plow ever made in the county, taking as a pattern one bought from Illinois by Charles Heddrick. Of the early settlers he has pleasant recollections of Thos. Keet, after whom Keetsville, now Washburn, was named, the "McClure boys" and Judge Cureton, who used to keep store and hauled his goods from St. Louis and Van Buren. Their milling was done at the old Williams Mill below Cassville, which now exists only in the memory of the oldest settlers. In 1844, when James K. Polk ran for president, there were about 27 votes cast at Washburn. A part of 1853 and 1854 was spent in Indiana, but in the latter year they returned. A cow and calf, if good brought from $5 to $7; good horses were worth $20 to $30; sheep 50 cents; calves $1 to $1.50; wheat brought 37 1/2 cents to 40 cents a bushel and corn a dime. Dressed pork was worth a cent a pound and all the hogs one wanted could be bought for 50 cents, and salt 2 cents a pound. Mr. Wethers remained in Barry County until 1862, when he joined Capt. Dixon's company under Price and Jo Shelby as regimental blacksmith in Co. Hunter's regiment. He was with Price when he made his last raid in Missouri. He says he thought the war an unjust one but to get out of the way of bushwhackers, who got everything he had, he joined the southern army and remained with it until 1865. Of their five boys, Allen M. joined the Union army and Doc (Alexander L.) Steve and William went into the Confederate service with their father. The other son, Thos. B., was too young for service and remained near Washburn. Mrs. Wethers' maiden name was Yarber and she was married to Mr. Wethers by Squire John Durham, which also came to their county and was buried at the Prairie Church some thirty years ago. She is the mother of ten children, of whom nine are living, the oldest being 67, the youngest 46. She can count 64 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Mr. Wethers is the only living one of his generation but can no longer vote the Democratic ticket as was his want during all his life until 1888, when he cast his last vote. He has retired from politics as from an active part of life. - Another Photo | Note Online Newspapers Donna Cooper Photos Cindy Marcell |
