Eidson History

Henry Eidson Jr., of Missouri, was the son of Henry and Mary Buford Eidson. He was born Aug. 5, 1832 in Fredericktown, Madison County. In the 1850 census he was living in Belleview in Washington County, Missouri, with his parents. He married Oct. 23, 1850, to Sarah Jamison, born Aug. 23, 1834. Sarah was the daughter of John C. Jamison and his wife, Andromache Carty. Sarah was the sister of Mary Susannah Jamison who married Martin Van Buren Fly, son of Jeremiah Nicholas and Nancy (Oakley) Fly.

Henry's obituary stated that he had lived in Kansas and southwest Missouri from 1854 thru 1865. He was in Barry County, Missouri by 1856 and was still listed as of that place in a deed executed in 1861 when he deed Mary E. Eidson (probably his mother land in Section 16, Twp. 24, Range 28 in Barry County.

In 1865 he returned to eastern Missouri and lived at Iron Mountain where he was superintendent of the Iron County farms for 19 years. He resigned in 1884 to a farm near Belleview. In September 1883 he and Mary E. Edison sold the property in Barry County to Joseph Shumate Barry County Deed book 30, page 69.

In their old age, Henry and Sarah lived with their daughter, Mary McFarland, at Bismarck, Missouri, in St. Francois County, Missouri, where Henry died 21 Feb 1918 at the age of 85 and Sarah died Feb 25 1928. Both are buried in the Eidson Cemetery near Belleview, Missouri.

According to the 1900 Federal Census Henry and Sarah had 8 children. Seven of those are listed here: Mary E., Susan E., John H., Emma Alice, Malvern Jackson "Jack", Catherine Mae "Katie", Willie L. Susan C. and John H. Eidson are buried in the Eidson Farm Cemetery, Barry County, Missouri.

Eric Roller, Ted Roller and Jack Fly found the cemetery in 2005. There were two headstone bases buried in the ground and numerous fragments of headstones scattered over a large area. It appeared that the fragments could be from two or more stones.

In September of 2010 Maureen and Mike Millikan and Jack Fly returned to the cemetery site. Fly, using dowsing rods, determined there were a total of six graves at that location. Pieces of the headstones were gathered to determine how many graves had been marked. After probing the ground, cleaning and piecing together the fragments that were found it was determined that only two of the graves had been marked with scribed headstones. The four unmarked graves are those of adults.

Research was contributed by George Edison, J. Jamison, Maureen Millilan and Jack Fly.
