He was born in Tennessee and came with his parents to Barry County in 1848 and located in Cassville and resided here for many years. Mr. Baze worked on the brick yard where the brick was made at the ford of Flat Creek in the city limits on the Washburn Road, that were used to build the court house that was torn down a few years ago. When the Civil War came on, he enlisted in the Union Army and served in 1st Ark. Cavalry, Co., E, under Major Chas. Galloway and Capt. G.R. King, and served three years, and eight months in the Home Guards. He made a good soldier and was a splendid man. Baze, J.T. Baze and P.S. Baze, all of Cassville. He had been a member of the Christian Church for many years and died in that faith. Rev. J.T. Brattin conducted funeral services at the Baptist Church in this city, Thursday at 4:00 p.m., after which the remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery, to await the reward of a well spent life. Peter Baze was a splendid man, citizen and neighbor, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all his acquaintances. He was recognized by all the older citizens of Barry County, as being an honest man, on whom you could depend. His soldier comrades in Barry County, will be made sad to learn of his death. But he has attended the last roll call on earth, but will answer in Heaven, when "the roll is called over there." | Note Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |

BLYTHE, Martha (BAYLESS) (CANADY) | Jan. 22, 1820 TN |
Dec. 25, 1903 MO |
SSW: William - Research Note: Stone has death year 1903. Paper has 1904. - Jan. 2, 1904, Cassville Democrat - J. C. (James Carrick) and W. J. (William Jefferson) Blythe and family attended the funeral of their mother, Aunt Martha Blythe at Flat Creek. - Notes from Rachel McCurry: Martha, who was once an orphan and whose maiden name may have been Bayless, married two men. First she married William Blythe and lived in Arkansas, then Missouri. He was granted land in Missouri after serving with the Army of Texas from 1861 to 1863. They had five boys. Then she was widowed shortly after arriving in Missouri and at some point married Mr. Thomas Canady and had son #6, Thomas Jr. in 1862. The curious thing is I believe she reverted to her 1st married name after being widowed a 2nd time because she is listed in the Barry Co., Missouri 1900 census as "Marthey" Blythe, living near two sons from her 1st marriage: Samuel W. age 44 in 1900 and John Blythe age 46. She has 11 Blythe grandchildren. Her last son Thomas Canady is not nearby. She is living alone at 80 but near the sons and grandchildren. She died three years later at 83. Her connection to me is this: her husband William Jefferson Blythe is the brother of Samuel Huston Blythe, who was the father of my great grandfather, John Morgan Blythe, father of Erma Lee Blythe, my grandma. - Phyllis' note: Census supports this: - 1870 Census, Mountain, Barry, Missouri - Martha Blythe, age 49 born TN; Mary J., age 19, born TN; George M., age 18, born TN; John S., age 17, born TN; James K., age 15, born TN; Samuel W., age 12, born TN; William J., age 11, born OH; Thomas R., age 8, born OH. All have the last name Blythe. - 1880 Census, Mountain, Barry, Missouri - Martha Blythe, age 60, born TN, parents born TN; John S., age 26, son, born TN; James C., age 25, son, born TN; Samuel W., age 22, born TN; Thomas Canady, age 18, son, born MO. - Another Photo | Online Newspapers Census Note Phyllis Long Photo Donna Cooper Photo Jay Trace |
