He was of the Peoples Party and received 81 votes. James M. Orrick a Republican won with 350 votes. From "The Chieftain", by William H. Cecil, Mt Vernon. - Tribune-Republican (Union, Missouri), Fri, Dec. 21, 1894 - James Badger and Alfred Cox, who lived on adjoining farms 2 miles north of Monett, became involved in a quarrel the other day over family affairs, and Badger shot and instantly killed Cox. - The Kansas City Star (Kansas City, Missouri), Wed, Dec. 12, 1894 - Fatal Quarrel Between Farmers, Carthage, MO: Yesterday Ebenezer Badger and Alfred Cox, two young farmers, spent the day hunting. About 5 o'clock they went to the home of Jep Kennedy, a brother-in-law of Badger, who quarreled about something and Cox picked up an axe and made a murderous rush at Badger, who immediately drew a pistol and fired. The shot took effect in Cox's neck and he fell to the ground dead. Badger went to Mt. Vernon and gave himself up to the sheriff. - The Springfield Democrat (Springfield, Missouri), Fri, Dec. 14, 1894 - A Religious Dispute. It Results in a Murder Near Pierce City. - At the residence of Shep Cannady, who lives 3 miles east of Pierce City, Eben Badger shot and killed Alfred Cox with a shot gun, the charge entering the left side of his neck, severing the arteries causing instant death. Cox fell only a few feet from the front door. But two persons were at the house at the time the shooting occurred, Mrs. Cannady and Mrs. Badger. Mr. Cannady at the time had gone a short distance into the field to drive out some cattle. Mrs. Cannady's screams brought Mr. Davis, a near neighbor, in a few moments and Badger surrendered himself into his keeping and asked him to take him to Pierce City and deliver him into the charge of the constable which he did. Badger and Cox are near neighbors and prosperous farmers, living not more than 1/4 of a mile apart on the Pierce City and Monett road, and south of Cannady's farm one mile. Until six months ago Cox and Badger had been the best of friends. Then they fell out over some religious questions which caused some ill feeling. Yesterday at Cannady's, Cox and Badger had a heated talk, afterward Badger went to his home and came back with his wife in a wagon to Cannady's house. He had his gun as he had been out hunting, and Cox had also his axe, he had been cutting fire wood on Cannady's farm. Badger makes a statement that they quarreled again and Cox suddenly picked up his axe and struck at him with it and that he fired his gun without sighting it. Both Cox and Badger merit the reputation of being first class citizens and have long been residents of Lawrence Co. | Census Note Phyllis Long Newspapers.com J. D. Cox Photo Jay Trace |

Research Note: A. J. Davidson first married Charlotte Marcum on Dec. 2, 1840 in Barry Co., MO. He second married Matilda Rowe on June 21, 1867 in Benton Co., AR. - Monett Leader 1893 - ATTEMPTED SUICIDE: Last evening at about 6 o'clock, two miles north of town, an old citizen known as Jacky Davidson, made an attempt to end his life by slashing each side of his neck with a pocket knife. Two of the cuts, one on each side of his neck, are very serious and may eventually cause his death. There are also several smaller cuts on either side, but they are not dangerous. As soon as the deed was done Dr. Dusenberry was sent for, and by the time he arrived the unfortunate man had become quite weak from the loss of blood. The wounds were sewed up and the patient made as comfortable as possible, but his condition is regarded as critical. Mr. Davidson is 77 years old and has been almost helpless from paralysis for about four years. Despondency was the cause of the rash act. He has a wife and several children who try to make his lot as pleasant as possible, but, to use his own words, he had become tired of life and thus sought to end it. - Footstone - Davidson Plot Stone | Monett Leader MO Marriage Records Census Phyllis Long Photos Jay Trace |
