CORNELISON, Jesse | 1776 or 1780 NC |
1862 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Researchers say he was the son of Jonathan Cornelison and Anne Cox. - Brandon's Notes: Early settlers of Seligman were Jess and Mary Cornelison, who settled on land that was to become part of the 680 acres belonging to Claude C. McCollum for more than five decades. It is located about three miles north of Seligman. Jess came from Kentucky around 1850. He and his wife Mary brought with them well bred stock and some negro slaves. At this time the land was all in timber and had to be cleared by the slaves in order to have land for farming and for buildings. The cut timber had to be burned as there was no market for it at the time. They, their slaves, and five others are buried a short distance from their house. Jess and Mary's graves were marked by rock markers until about 20 years ago when new grave markers were placed by some of their descendants. Jess and Mary's children were: Garrett, John, Martin T., William, James Harrison, Elijah, Sarah Ann, Miles, Milton P., Orlena, Nancy Marlessie, Jesse E. Jr., Joseph Columbus, Madison Porter, and Mary A. - Phyllis' Notes: Jesse Cornelison married Mary "Polly" Roberts on June 5, 1808 in Madison Co., KY. - A Memorial and biographical history of McLennan, Falls, Bell and Coryell Counties, Texas - Gives a bio for Jesse's grandson, who was a son of Milton Porter Cornelison, and Milton Porter was the son of Jesse and Mary Cornelison. It states that "Jesse was a native of NC from which state he moved to MO, where he died at the age of 98. His wife (Mary) lived to 105 years old. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War." - I doubt he was a Revolutionary War Veteran if he was born in 1780. Questioned also are the birth and death dates. - Jesse was born in NC, he was in KY in the 1830 census and married there, had children in TN, still there in the 1840 census, and in Barry Co., MO in the 1850 census. He bought land in Section 3, Barry Co., MO, and the sale was registered in Springfield, MO on Dec. 16, 1850. - Note the age difference in the census records. Jesse might have been born in 1776 instead of 1780. - 1850 Census, District 5, Barry, Missouri - Jesse Cornelison, age 70, farmer, born NC; Mary A., age 62, born NC; Madison Porter, (son) age 19, farmer, born TN; Mary A., (daughter) age 17, born TN. - 1860 Census, Sugar Creek, Barry, Missouri - Jesse Cornelison, age 84, farmer, born NC; Mary, age 75, born NC; Mary A., age 27, born TN; C. T. (not sure of the initials), age 6, female, born MO; J. N. F. (not sure of the initials), age 3, male, born MO. - 1860 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules - Owner, Jesse Cornelison: Listed are 4 female slaves, ages 42, 19, 13, 11. The 13 year old was a mulatto, the others listed as black. - Jesse's Rock - Jesse and Mary's Plot | Headstone Note Brandon Burns KY Marriage Records Census Phyllis Long Photo Jay Trace |
