Inscription: "Age 90 Yr. 9 Mo. 9 Da." - Research Note: Daughter of Samuel Montgomery, born Rhea Co., TN, and mother was Jemima Little, born Meigs Co., TN. - Cassville Democrat, Feb. 28, 1920 - Another excellent woman has been called from earth to a heavenly reward for a well spent life. She did nothing but good. It was her ambition, seemingly, to implant goodness in every character that she came in contact with. She was never known to speak a cross word to any one, exhibiting a lovely disposition, that very few are blessed with. Mrs. Elizabeth J. Montgomery was born in Ray County, Tenn., and came to Barry County, with her parents in 1842. She grew to womanhood on Shoal Creek in Liberty Township and has been a continuous citizen of Barry County, for 78 years. She professed faith in Christ at an early age and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Concord, in which she continued faithful and loyal to the day of her death. She left two brothers, Capt. James Montgomery of Okmulgee, Okla., Robert Montgomery and one sister Miss Dicey Montgomery of Liberty township. The Montgomery family is one of the old and highly esteemed families of Barry county and the many acquaintances will regret the removal of another link of the chain of life. She died Feb. 19, 1920 and the remains were interred in Concord Cemetery, on 20th, after funeral services conducted by Rev. J. P. Campbell of Fayetteville, Ark. Her brother Capt. James Montgomery and his son Finis of Okmulgee, Okla., and Harris Montgomery of Joplin and many relatives and friends attended her funeral. Online Newspapers

CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY" - Research Note: His father was Samuel Montgomery, born Rhea Co., TN, and mother was Jemima Little, born Meigs Co., TN. His wife was Agnes Ann McCary. He was a Confederate Civil War Veteran, serving in Company I, 8th Missouri Infantry, as Captain. - Goodspeed's Bio - James Montgomery, a prominent farmer of Liberty Township, Barry Co., Mo., is the second son and sixth child of Samuel and Jemimah (Little) Montgomery. Samuel Montgomery was born in 1805 in Virginia, and when a young man went to Tennessee, in which State he followed farming until 1842. He removed to Barry County, MO., locating on Shoal Creek two and one-half miles south of James Montgomery's farm. The former was one of those who came to the wilderness of Southwest Missouri to make a home for themselves and families to lend a helping hand in developing the wonderful resources of this region. He became a prominent citizen, and followed agricultural pursuits until his death on May 27, 1885. His wife was born in Georgia in 1808. She died about 1886. They were both consistent members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and were the parents of twelve children, eight daughters and four sons, of whom one is deceased. All the others reside in Barry County. James was born on February 8, 1835, Rhea County, Tenn., and came with his parents to Missouri in 1842. Before the war he pursued the trade of cabinet making and carpentering, but since has been engaged in farming. He served during the war in the Confederate army, as captain of Company I, Eighth Missouri Infantry. In 1870 he married Agnes A. McCary, a daughter of Lindsey McCary, a prominent farmer and mechanic of the county. Mr. Montgomery has a very desirable farm consisting of 300 acres of Woodward Creek valley land, on which are two fine springs. He and wife have five children; Albert, Lydia, Finis, James and Joseph T. Politically Mr. Montgomery is a democrat, and takes an active interest in public affairs. Both he and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church." Other children of Samuel and Jemimah: Sarah m. Archey Herrell 1854, Barry Co.; Elizabeth d. 1920, Barry Co.; Rebecca m. Jackson Howerton 1859, Barry Co.; Amanda m. G. W. Stamps 1855, Barry Co.; Thomas m. Ellen Layton 1869, Barry Co.; Joshua d. 1892 Barry Co. (this fact is incorrect, Joshua d. 1912 Okmulgee Co., Oklahoma); Dica d. 1930, Barry Co.; Margaret d. 1879, Barry Co.; Eliza ?; Samuel ?; Robert d. 1926, Barry Co. The Lindsey McCary family migrated from Rhea Co., Tennessee about 1859. Two sons, John and Joseph, served under Captain Montgomery in the Civil War. - "The Long Journey Home" was written by Carl Montgomery, grand nephew of James, Joshua and Thomas Carroll Montgomery in December, 2001: The three Montgomery brothers, James, Thomas Carroll and Joshua, were in Company I of 8th MO INF CSA from 1862-1865. When the war ended in 1865 they came home. The story handed down from the family says that they all walked home from LA and that it took them 6 months to make the journey. Realizing that 136 years has passed since 1865 makes any research difficult. However, a book published in 1999 called "Serving with Honor" by Michael Banasik, presents facts that cast doubt on the long walk from LA. This book is a diary account of Captain E. A. Pinnell of Company D of the 8th MO INF. He relates the day to day activity of himself and his fellow soldiers. Captain James Montgomery was mentioned several times in the book and apparently Pinnell and James were friends. Mary Sue Gulley of Muskogee, OK, the great grand-daughter of James, has preserved wonderful documents that prove to me that James, and probably his two brothers were sent to St. Louis at the end of the war. She also has a promissory note given to James from Pinnell promising to repay $100 James loaned to him. The 8th MO INF was not formally surrendered until June 2, 1865. This surrender took place at Shreveport, LA. Shortly after, the unit was moved by steam boat, the "Judge Fletcher", from Shreveport to Alexandria, arriving on June 7th. They were then moved on down the Red River to Baton Rouge, LA, arriving on June 9th. On June 13th they were loaded on board the "Ben Stickney" bound for St. Louis, MO. They arrived on June 19th at 2:00 A.M. Captain Pinnell, in his diary account, relates that they went ashore at 6:00 A.M. on June 20, and remained on the wharf until 8:00 A.M. They then marched to Schofield Barracks and then to the Provo Marshall's office, where they took the oath of allegiance to the US government. They then returned to the barracks provided by the government. On June 21st they boarded the train for Rolla, MO, which was the end of the line at that time. This is Pinnell's account of his activity on arrival and I believe it mirrors the activity of Captain James Montgomery. I base this on a document kept by James and preserved by Mary Sue Gulley. It is an oath of allegiance signed by James Montgomery on June 20 in St. Louis, MO. Also on the document is a transportation destination stamp (Somewhat illegible) showing Rolla, MO. I believe it was his ticket, so to speak, enabling him to board the train on June 21 on his journey home. Thomas Carroll and Joshua could have possibly walked from LA, but I believe they would have stayed with their brother James, as he was Captain of their Company. The journey from Rolla, MO to Barry County would have still been a long, hard one. Probably lacking any US money for food or shelter, nor any civilian clothes, it would have been a long difficult trip. Only the preservation of James' war documents by Mary Gulley and the writing of the book, "Serving with Honor", has the journey home of our ancestors been clarified. - Military Stone Notes
