Sept. 1, 1919 Ozark Twp., Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Father: Levi H. Smith, Mother: Frances Lemaster. Cause of death: Cirrhosis of liver and Aortic insufficiency. Year of birth on tombstone does not agree with date on death certificate, date of birth is given as Dec. 30, 1853 on death certificate. Jim thinks that this is the Francis A. Smith who married Margaret C. Ellis, Aug. 16, 1871 in Barry County. They are found in the 1880 Barry Co. census with children Effa C., Rachel L. and Alfred A. The recorded age for Francis in that census would make his year of birth 1853. Frank A.'s second wife was Hattie Strong. - Jay's Note: The death certificate reads that he was a married farmer, he died of cirrhosis of the liver, along with aortic insufficiency. Inscription: "Our Mother" - Jim Wilson's Note: She was born May 15, 1859 Washburn, Barry Co., MO and died Feb. 16, 1925 in Aurora, Lawrence Co., MO - Harriet Strong Creason was the daughter of James Creason and Nancy Mullins. Harriet S. Creason married Jno. Hains Oct., 21, 1877, in Newton Co., MO. In the 1880 census Harriet Hains lived in McDonald Co., MO, a 21 year-old widow with a son, James D., age 1. On July 23, 1899, Hattie Vaughn and Francis A. Smith were united in marriage by M. L. Robbins, JP, in Barry Co., MO. In the 1900 census, Francis and Harriet Smith and their family lived in Ozark Township, Barry Co., MO, and included in the household were Claude and Benjamin Vaughn, listed as step-sons. I have not found a record for a marriage between Harriett (Creason) Hains and a male by the name of Vaughan (which appears to be the more common spelling of this family's name), although there are Vaughans living in Barry Co. in 1900. Ben Francis Vaughan, born May 30, 1897, lists his nearest relative as Harriet Strong Smith on his WWI registration card.
