Ellis married Cassie Vauslorn (Van Horn), July 12, 1900, in Barry County. - Easter Catherine Tunnell, wife of Francis Marion Ellis, was the daughter of Jesse Tunnell and Rebecca Davis of McMinn County, TN. Jesse Tunnell was the son of John Tunnell and was named in his will. Correction: Francis Marion Ellis's second wife was Cassie Van Horn, a widow, not Vauslorn as I previously wrote. ELLIS, Ezearul/Ezekial | July 28, 1854 McMinn Co., TN |
Dec. 22, 1932 Monett, Barry Co., MO |
SSW: Harret Emeline Ellis - Inscription: "In God We Trust", "Father And Mother Rest In Peace." Has engraving of a Bible on stone. - Research Note: His wife was Harriet E. Ellis. Parents not known on the death certificate. Abby Ellis of Monett, MO was the informant. Jim's note: I am puzzled by the given name Ezearul on the stone. In all the census records his name is shown as Ezekial, except for 1880, when he is registered as E. Z. Ellis. E. Z. Ellis is also the name on his death certificate. Is the inscription on the stone a mistake? Ezekial Z. Ellis was the son of Benjamin Abbott Ellis and Mary Anna Maples, who were married in McMinn County, TN., Aug. 7, 1848. According to census records they came to Missouri between 1860 and 1870. E. Z. Ellis's death certificate gives his birth place as Barry County, MO., but I would feel certain that he was born in McMinn County, since the family is recorded in the census there in 1860, when he is shown to be six years old. He married Harriett Emeline Calton Sept. 19, 1875, in Barry County, and they were parents of seven children according to census records. - Story by Sylvia: Uncle Zeke was Ezekiel Ellis, the son of Benjamin Abbott Ellis and his wife Harriet Emmaline "Aunt Liney" (Calton) Ellis. I have pictures of them somewhere. They lived in Monett Missouri having come from Tennessee and Alabama. Liney was hard of hearing and Zeke and she were very "countrified" and unsophisticated. There is a family story of Zeke, having been invited to a friend's home who had electricity. He was 'caught short' during the visit and had to visit the restroom. He was told "To turn the bathroom light on, just pull the chain." He apparently went in and did so. Conversation went on without him for a while, but eventually the people noticed that Zeke had not emerged from the bathroom for quite some time! Finally the owner of the home investigated and found Zeke, still in the room, muttering and cussing under his breath. Subsequent investigation found that Ezekiel Ellis had never before SEEN a pull chain type light and he was trying to turn it off by pushing the chain back INTO the fixture! Quite reasonably, he had figured that if you pull the chain to turn it on, you had to push it back to turn the light off. | Headstone J. T.
